### ★☆☆☆☆ The worst travel agency: unreasonable demand for additional payment 6 days before the start of the tour, unilateral cancellation 2 days in advance

I booked a Tibet tour with Tibet Horizon Travel Agency (tibettourism.com) in April 2026 for a total price of $2,075 USD. At the time of booking and payment, I was NEVER informed—verbally, in writing, or in any terms & conditions—that additional fees such as a "single room supplement" might apply.

Six (6) days before the scheduled departure date, the agency suddenly contacted me via WhatsApp demanding an extra $603 USD, claiming they had failed to find a roommate for the twin-share accommodation. When I asked where this obligation was documented, they pointed to a line in their April booking confirmation that listed "Single Supplement" under a generic "Excluded" section.

This is where their argument becomes absurd—and important for other travelers to understand:

🔹 The "Excluded" list also contained items like:
   • International flights to China
   • Chinese visa fees
   • Alcoholic beverages
   • Laundry services
   • Personal expenses

🔹 My response to the agency:
   "If 'excluded' means I must pay you for it later, regardless of whether I use it or need it, then:
   - Do I owe you money for the 'international flight' listed as excluded, when I DIDN'T fly at all—but entered China via LAND BORDER FROM VIETNAM?
   - Do I owe you for a Chinese visa I didn't need (we have a visa-free regime with China)?
   - Am I obligated to pay for alcoholic drinks or laundry services I never ordered?
   
   Obviously not. 'Excluded' logically means 'not included in this package; available optionally at your own arrangement/cost IF you choose to use it.' It does NOT mean 'we will invoice you later for items you may or may not consume, regardless of your actual travel arrangements.'"

🔹 The agency's response to this logical, good-faith argument:
   ❌ Complete silence. They ignored the rebuttal entirely.
   ❌ No clarification, no documentation, no willingness to discuss contract interpretation.
   ❌ Instead, they escalated to unilateral cancellation.

Two (2) days before departure, the agency CANCELLED my confirmed tour because I refused to pay an undisclosed charge retroactively justified by a vague "excluded" label. They processed a refund of the original $2,075, but offered ZERO compensation for my actual, documented losses:

• Train tickets from the Vietnam-China border to Golmud (Geermu), the starting point of the Tibet tour;
• Pre-booked hotels in other Chinese cities;
• Time, effort, and emotional distress of planning a trip that never happened.

Throughout the dispute, the agency:
❌ Refused to acknowledge that "excluded" ≠ "mandatory hidden fee";
❌ Ignored all references to Chinese Consumer Rights Protection Law (Article 8: right to price transparency);
❌ Provided no written explanation for why a standard industry practice (disclose supplements BEFORE booking) did not apply to them;
❌ Offered no meaningful resolution beyond a basic refund.

I have filed formal complaints with the Tibet Tourism Development Commission and China's 12345 government service hotline.

⚠️ LESSON FOR OTHER TRAVELERS:
If an agency lists something as "excluded" but does NOT explicitly state at booking that it is a MANDATORY potential cost (e.g., "Single supplement: $XXX if no roommate found"), treat it as optional. Demand written confirmation of ANY potential extra fees BEFORE you pay. If they refuse or are vague—walk away.

For transparency: I am happy to provide screenshots of the full WhatsApp correspondence, payment receipts, and complaint reference numbers to any traveler who contacts me via TripAdvisor messaging.

10-Day Lhasa-Everest Base Camp-Lake Namtso Tour with Tibet Horizon
We recently completed a 10-day tour of Lhasa, Everest Base Camp, and Lake Namtso organized by an agent representing Tibet Horizon (Tibet Tourism). Overall, we had a wonderful time exploring this incredible region. Highlights included witnessing the magnificent Mount Everest from Rongbuk Base Camp and exploring the beautiful Tibetan monasteries and the iconic Potala Palace in Lhasa. Both the driver and tour guides were super friendly and contributed greatly to making the trip comfortable and enjoyable.
However, there are a few areas where the company could improve their planning and organization to enhance the experience for future travellers:
1.	Itinerary and Accommodation Information:
We were given a 9-day itinerary instead of the full 10 days, with no mention of the hotels where we would be staying. This lack of clear information caused confusion and delays during immigration in Beijing, as we were unsure about our accommodation details in Lhasa. Despite booking a 10-day tour with 4-star accommodations, we were provided with tent accommodation (without toilet facilities) at Rongbuk Base Camp and only a 3-star hotel near Lake Namtso. We believe customers should be given the exact accommodation details upfront to avoid any surprises.
2.	Communication and Agent Responsiveness:
We tried to contact the agent who organized the tour regarding the itinerary and accommodation issues but received no response. Improved communication and timely support from the agent would greatly benefit travellers.
3.	Tibet Permit Delivery Process:
The process for receiving the Tibet Travel Permit could be streamlined. We were informed that the original permit must be presented before boarding the flight in Beijing. This required rushing out of Beijing International Airport to obtain the permit before flying to Lhasa. However, no permit checks were conducted until we were traveling within Tibet, and only photocopies of the permit were checked at various points. A clearer and more efficient permit delivery system would reduce stress and make the process smoother.
In conclusion, while we thoroughly enjoyed the natural beauty and cultural richness of Tibet, improving the itinerary transparency, accommodation arrangements, agent communication, and permit handling would significantly enhance the overall travel experience.

I can’t write how happy we were with Tibet Horizon and Asia China Tours.  Kalsang from Tibet Horizon planned our entire itinerary, which was Shanghai, Xining, Lhasa, Shigatse, Everest Base Camp, Xian and Beijing.  They arranged all the internal flights, train tickets, hotel bookings, transportation, guides in the various cities and all tickets to the various attractions and sights.  I would highly recommend them as well as the itinerary they suggested.  Things could not have gone more smoothly; all guides were there at the airports to pick us up and ensured that we were checked in to the next travel leg.  The guides Sally in Xining, Lobsang in Tibet, Kathy in Xian and Diana in Beijing were great. All of them asked us to contact them at any time in case of any issues and ensured we got what we wanted.    The sights in all the cities especially Tibet were fantastic.  Also a travel trip insist on staying at the guest house at EBC you will be able to watch sunrise and sunset on Everest with about 50 or so guests without the 100s of day trippers.

I was amazed to find that in such a modernized world, there are still places that maintain their ethnic uniqueness. The scenery of Namtso Lake is breathtaking: the lake is like a piece of green agate - beautiful and pure.
