2 Weeks with LTL in Beijing

I spent two weeks with LTL in Beijing recently and I honestly felt like my limited proficiency in Chinese made much more improvement with them there compared to my months of self-study online, largely owing to LTL's small classroom environment encouraging participation and providing help when needed, the experienced, skilled teachers and staff, the after-school activities where we were able to practice our Chinese in the real world, and the excellent homestay service. Would definitely recommend.

1 great week in Beijing

I had a great time in Beijing this January even though it was just a short week :) Teacher Alice was really great and adjusted to my short schedule so we could make it as efficient as possible. The school activities were also fun and made it easy to meet other students (thanks Linda & staff). Beijing is a great city with lots of things to do and easy to get around, but do be prepared for the cold!

Awesome learning experience with LTL Beihai

Awesome learning experience with LTL Beihai, program was tailored to my needs with 1 on 1 classes and super patient teachers. The school has its nice little social life. Beihai is low key compared to big cities in China, although there is heritage worth visiting, a unique sea environment and enough friendly coffee shops for homework time. I enjoyed all of it!

LTL-Homestay

你们好!It was the first Time I went to Beijing, hence I want to learn chinese I chose LTL School combined with a Homestay. First I had some doubts, going to a complete unknown City, staying with Strangers seemed very challenging. But even my best expectations were topped. People in School are very, very friendly and helpful. The Teachers know what they are doing and encourage you. All in all the perfect atmosphere to learn a Language.5/5 It was so nice I will do it twice!

I studied in Chengdu

I studied in Chengdu, and I can't recommend it enough! From the moment I started, the teachers’ patience and dedication to my success were obvious. Each teacher has their own unique teaching style, but they all share a passion for helping their students succeed in their language ability and in adapting to life in China. With their support, I was able to progress from absolute beginner to HSK 3 in just four months, which I never thought would be possible! The teachers all feel like good friends now and I can't wait to go back and visit everyone ( Every teacher was great, but specific shoutouts to Nathan, Unicorn, and Dawn for helping me enjoy the city and progress my language level) This school has a small classroom which facilitates student interation and they organize fun activites like game days. This helps students meet non foreginer friends and immerse themselves in chinese culture. Also the student advisor Mandy was fantastic—always approachable, supportive, and eager to help you make the most of your experience. Chengdu itself is an amazing city for solo travelers. It’s incredibly friendly to foreigners, and there’s so much to do! From exploring the bustling city streets to visiting cultural landmarks, I always found something exciting to fill my free time. The food is absolutely delicious, and while I wasn’t a fan of spicy food at first, Chengdu slowly converted me—I even started craving it by the end of my stay. The school not only helped me improve my language skills but also provided opportunities to meet other students and build lasting friendships. I was a long-term student, and even after four months, I felt like I had only scratched the surface of what Chengdu has to offer. I wish I could have stayed longer, both to continue learning and to explore more of this incredible city. If you're considering learning Chinese, this school is a fantastic choice. The teachers truly care about their students, the facilities are excellent, and Chengdu is a vibrant city that will make your stay unforgettable.

I had a great time , but will just not recommend certain kit

It was my first time on a language trip and I had a great time. I really enjoyed the safari kit, I visited Cheng du's famous place with my teacher Dawn 老师 learning about Cheng du's culture and history, we chatted in Chinese like we were friends, she helped me to structure my sentence better and also taught me new super useful words. I just think the survival kit and the connection kit are not worth it. For the survival kit, you can survive without it, especially if you have Alipay. You can ask for help to get the SIM card, the transport card, you can have it on your Alipay. You don't have to pay extra for that. Now, I wasn't in a home stay, so maybe it's useful for people in a home stay. And for the connection kit, I was paired up at the beginning with a Chinese student who was really busy with school, so I only met her once the day we were introduced and we were supposed to hang out other days but she was too busy. The great thing is when I reported the problem to the school at the end of my stay, Unicorn, a teacher at the school kindly took the place of my Chinese buddy and we went to have lunch together, we had a great time, Unicorn was really sweet and kind. I really enjoyed the buddy programme, we will do an activity once a week with the students of the school and Chinese friends, a great opportunity to practice our Chinese in a casual context. The thing I liked most was the activity and atmosphere of the school, all the teachers are super friendly, kind and professional. We often go out for lunch at the nearby restaurant, we chat and laugh together, we even went ice skating one day with all the students and teachers, it was so much fun. I'm definitely going to miss everyone and all the time we spend together. I meet really wonderful people there and hope to see everyone again one day 🤍

Serious and professional school

LTL attracts capable and professional teachers and offers courses for different levels. Also, LTL organizes frequent visits to places in the city, thus helping the students familiarising with the local culture. During my three weeks experience in August 2024, I met students of all ages, profession and origin, which made my experience even more interesting. Talking to other students, however, I realized that LTL is not always in a position to find ideal accomodation. A high level of flexibility is therefore required.

It was my first time in China

It was my first time in China. I did not want to go to a Hotspot like Shanghai or Beijing. So I decided to go to Beihai. It is a smaller city and the people are very welcoming. The school is central located. The lessons are interesting. I did not speak any chinese word. The teacher taught me basics. First the Pinyin and at the end some short sentences and questions. I only visited Beihai for 2 weeks. It was definitely too short. But it was a very nice time and the school is well organized. It is a smaller one than in other cities. But I liked to have some activities in the evening.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your immersive experience in Beihai with us, Andreas. You made great strides in your time with us and we'd love to see you come back again :) Keep up the great work. LTL Team

Excellent course, if you're ready for it.

I spent three weeks there, concentrating on improving pronunciation. Excellent course, which I have no hesitation in recommending and would love to go back. So why 4 stars not 5? Because it won't suit some people. Practically no-one speaks English in Chengde, so you need to have reached a suitable level of confidence (if not language proficiency). That said, everyone is really friendly and patient- not like some of the larger cities in China and the rest of the world. Homestay is worth it. Of course, its a bit difficult staying with another family for several weeks- even without the cultural differences. But its a great way to meet locals and understand culture, as well as language. The teachers will respond flexibly and patiently to your needs- but you have to know what you want and state it clearly. Overall, if you have a certain level of proficiency and confidence then I recommend this wholeheartedly. But it isn't the place to start.

LTL Language School 回复2024-05-16

Thanks for your kind words about our course in Chengde, Chris. We're really pleased you enjoyed the immersive aspect and happy to see you make such strong progress. Hope to see you again here soon :) Best wishes, LTL Team

Mandarin by the sea

I came to Beihai in March 2024 for 4 weeks, studying each morning 5 days a week. It looked like a nice spot on the south coast of China at a time when a lot of China would be pretty cold. Beihai has lots of beaches, if that's your thing - and is big enough (1.5m ppl) to have a fair bit to explore, but not so big that it's overwhelming. Once you're up and running on a bicycle of electric scooter it's an easy (and flat) place to navigate. I didn't choose to stay in a homestay, as I couldn't afford to, so stayed in a hotel for the first fortnight, and then ended up renting a local apartment cheaply for the last few weeks (via a local friend I made on the beach). Overall I have enjoyed my time in Beihai (despite the sun not coming out quite as much as I would have hoped!). The school is small, and tucked away on the 5th floor of a shopping mall in the middle of the city. It's a quirky location, and does mean that if you're looking for a 'campus' style experience, this isn't the place to come. The set up is small but functional, with a few newly fitted out classrooms and a small kitchen/common room - there's an outdoor space to for when the weather is good. Even though I booked a group class I ended up in a one on one for 2hrs each morning as there we no other students booked into group classes at my level - it's probably best to expect that you'll do one on one classes here. The teaching I've had is good - and I was able to choose which aspects of learning I wanted to focus on (in my case listening and speaking), with no pressure to spend time on reading and writing. I have definitely improved in my relatively short time here. The school has organised a number of different social opportunities which were good fun, and it's a place where you can just walk around in a place with no foreigners and soak up being in China beyond the tourist spots. If you're looking for somewhere where you won't be surrounded by English speakers, and a fun friendly, if small, group of teachers and students to study Chinese with, Beihai is a fun and affordable place to come.

I have had a great first month at ltl…

I have had a great first month at ltl Shanghai! The lessons are great, adding a layer of native knowledge to the book that is used. Common phrases and other 'survival words' have led to me now being able to do a lot of basic things in mandarin (ordering food, asking directions, etc). The general communication from the staff is clear and very helpfull and fun activities are organized every week! My two teachers, Jason Wang and Winnie Li are both very skilled and pleasant in the classroom. Where Jason focuses more on vocabulary and learning everyday phrases Winnie is making sure the characters are really imprinted in my mind! They are a great combo and I am very happy to be their student. The only thing that could have been better was a more in depth-preperation for all the apps and different things required to use in China, especially for the people staying longer. Would definetly recommend LTL shanghai!

I studied at LTL Taiwan for 3 months

I studied at LTL Taiwan for 3 months! Overall, I had a positive experience. Before I left the US, Riona was fabulous and gave a wonderful introduction to the school, campus and classrooms. Throughout my time, I had three teachers (Iris, Alice and Jewel). All three teachers had different strengths. Iris used the NTNU book as a guide, whereas Alice and Jewel both focused more on conversational topics. With all my teachers, I was able to focus on my language goals in a 1:1 setting. While I was there, unfortunately, I had individual lesson times that did not allow me to often go to lunches with the group. When there were group activities, most students (including me) spoke English instead of an immersive Chinese environment. Overall, I would recommend the experience for short-term, individualized experience.

Great program for immersion - Korean program in Seoul

My experience with LTL was great, and the 5 weeks passed very fast (even too fast!). I chose this course because I did not want to be in a centralised school surrounded by English speakers - this is a great opportunity to create a more immersive environment! I also had a great time learning Korean. It was not easy to be able to exercise Korean in conversation (especially when, as in my case, the teacher is part of the host family). Nevertheless, my grammar skills greatly improved. I was alone and not with other students; this narrowed my opportunities to practice conversation and to socialise, but it did foster language immersion. I was also welcomed very warmly by my host family. We often had very nice meals together, both at home and out in town. I was able to spend some time in Seoul as a local and to get to know more and more about Korean every-day culture. For those looking for an immersive environement, especially over longer and more flexible periods of time, and for a more "authentic" experience of Seoul life, this program can be a great solution.

Amazing country, but I’ll never do a home stay again

I took the LTL’s semester in China this spring and got to experience the culture first hand. China itself is an amazing country and I have definitely experienced a totally different culture compared to what I have been used to as a Scandinavian. I have always been very open to and interested in new cultures and meeting new people, and I also expected to face some misunderstandings due to culture or language, but I didn’t expect my home stay to be like it was. First day I was asked by my host family to buy my own toilet paper, towel and soap for washing my clothes. It’s not expensive, so I didn’t mind, but I was told that I had to buy it myself because the school paid them so little money so they couldn’t provide it for me. Often in class if I just borrow something such as a paper for notes or a colored pen to underline something I was met with the comment “you can borrow it now, but maybe you should buy your own in the future, because I can’t afford to let you use it”. Again it’s not really about the money, but more the feeling of being an economic burden to them. I also asked them to speak more Chinese to me, so I could use it some more, but that wasn’t a possibility, because they wanted to practice their English. Due to cultural differences and language barriers we often had some misunderstandings, so some days I was locked out of the apartment for hours or even a days, because they couldn’t give me a key. This also made our daily lives very dependent on each other. My worst experience with my homestay was mostly that I never really felt welcomed. The husband only talked to me in the beginning because the wife asked him to do it (she told me that, when we had an argument). When I asked for something I was often met with an answer such as “why do you always ask. You know it is like…”. I have been told “you think you have friends here, but actually you don’t”, which was difficult to hear for someone who just finished high school and never had gone abroad alone and honestly felt lonely sometimes in the new country, especially because I didn’t get any classmates either. I was often referred to as “an adult” and was afterwards questioned why I didn’t behave like one. Even though I’m not a child, I’m still a total stranger to the country and culture, but I’m willing to learn if they’re willing to teach me. I felt like a burden and I dared not to ask about more complicated things in the fear of being met by “why do you always ask, you should know” or just getting totally misunderstood without a chance to explain myself. During my time in China I contacted the school for advice and sometimes I also asked them not to let my hostfamily know, because it would just cause more misunderstandings as it did the times I tried to talk with them myself. Every time I asked the school for advice I was always met by “it’s just because of culture differences. Try to talk with them, then I’m sure you two can figure it out”. I have tried to talk, but it didn’t work and the language school also discussed the matter with my hostfamily without letting me know, even though I asked them not to. After my hostfamily had heard I had spoken with the school instead of going directly to them, I was confronted with “why do you not go to me instead? We are proper adults, we should be able to talk directly to each other instead”. I stopped seeking help from the language school over time until the day I was told that they couldn’t take me anymore and was looking forward to when I finally was gone. According to them I was rude, ungrateful and unable to make friends. They had helped me much more than what they saw as their responsibility. According to them, their only responsibility was to provide food and a room for me. Nothing else and I should therefore be thankful for everything except for that. Talking to me, asking me about my day, giving me advice and help about how to manage in the new country was not their responsibility. I asked the school about it and they confirmed that they were right about what their responsibilities were and wasn’t. Therefore, I have paid more than 30.000元 (€4.000) for at host family whose responsibility never was to be a family or even the host. What I paid for was just a room and some food. Nothing else. Not even the opportunity to use my Chinese with them or learn about the culture, except for when I was corrected for not behaving well according to the Chinese culture. But looking on the bright side, I got an unforgettable journey, my Chinese did improve and despite my host family’s opinion about me, I made some wonderful Chinese friends whom I had fun with and whom I’m still in contact with today.

Hello Nanna, Thank you for your review and feedback about your program in Chengdu. We are really happy to hear you enjoyed your time in China and the city of Chengdu specifically. Firstly, we are really sorry to hear about your experience with the Homestay. Relationships between the Homestay family members and the student are always very personal. Whilst the vast majority of students have an absolutely amazing experience with their Homestays, it can happen that two people do not get on with each other. It makes us sad to hear this was the case. However, claiming that you did not receive support from the school during this time is not true. In these kind of cases the most important thing is to communicate things clearly and comprehensively as soon as possible. During your time in Chengdu our Director of Studies was in constant contact with you. You two spoke many times, countless text messages were exchanged, she visited you at your homestay and spent several hours with you at the family to support you. When you reached out for more support, we organized a long video call with LTL’s founder for additional support, which at the time you said you found very useful. The team listened to your thoughts and concerns, and gave many ideas of how to make the relationship work better with the Homestay. We had many meetings both internally and with you to help you to settle in better. Multiple people were involved during your study program, and multiple people tried to help you with any issues you might have had. Regardless, we are still happy to hear you enjoyed your time in Chengdu, that you reviewed your teacher 8/10, and made friends along the way. We hope you have a chance to visit the China and LTL again in the future. Best wishes, LTL Team

Quite a disappointment

My stay: February 4th-April 14th, homestay, group classes, one-on-one classes. LTL is a big disappointment. Prior to my arrival, I used flexi-classes which I would definitely recommend. However, LTL’s school in Taipei does not hold its word and is extremely overpriced. The pros: LTL has a great community of people, and people attending are very kind - especially Riona (the coordinator of Homestay) is always ready to help. The teachers are alright. The cons: LTL makes a LOT of promises online that they do not live up to. For example, I did not receive a placement test (was placed in the beginners class for two weeks), my group classes were repeatedly more than 6 people, they forgot about my prepaid survival kit, my room in my first homestay was part of the living room/kitchen (no individual room with a lock, and it felt more like the family wanted to make money off the situation), my second homestay only spoke English with me and was located way more than 45 minutes away from LTL. LTL also repeatedly brought us into the facilities of children’s cram schools when the ratio of students to classrooms exceeded their own capacity - then we would sit at these tiny tables and chairs made for 5-year-olds, while 5-year-olds had classes next to us. It felt like a joke at that price. My experiences even seemed rather mild compared to my friends at LTL, but I will leave it up to them to write their own reviews. The repeated excuse from LTL has been the “after Covid, we got more students than expected”. It is understandable that it can be hard to adjust quickly, but if LTL already knows the quality of the product they are selling to us online does not fulfil the agreed-upon conditions, it is to lie to the customer. I never fully received what I paid for. This is a breach of contract, and I think I am entitled to a refund (like many others should be). When raising the problem to Andreas (the founder of LTL), the only solution I was offered was free flexi classes, but these are not even close to the value lost by LTL’s breach of contract. I highly regret spending my money on LTL. If you are reading this as a potential LTL student, you are better off going to the language schools attached to Taiwanese universities (you can attend them with visa-exempt travel and some also offer one-on-one classes). Here, students are more international, so you are forced to speak in Chinese with everyone. In that way, you get to focus on “living the language” as LTL promised but never fulfilled.

LTL Language School 回复2023-06-27

Hello Louisa, Thanks a lot for taking the time to review us. I am very happy that you would definitely recommend LTL Flexi Classes www.flexiclasses.com, found LTL a great community of people and especially liked our team member Riona (I will explain below why). I am very sorry that your experience right after COVID was not what you wanted it to be. We tried our best, but clearly it was not good enough. We of course had many meetings during your course to discuss how to improve things. When you did not like the first homestay we changed it. When we found that your class had 7 instead of 6 students (which should never and has never previously happened) we changed it and gave you free classes. The chairs were not big enough and while it is fixed now, it was not done in time for you. So this was not good enough for you and I am very sorry about this. The reason for the challenges was that you started your course less than three months after Taiwan lifted all COVID restrictions from one day to the next. After three years of not a single student coming to Taiwan, we expected students of course to arrive, but we underestimated the speed. Also we definitely underestimated how many teachers and homestays had moved on to do other things during COVID. They wanted a holiday and were not ready to start take students again right after the pandemic. Just a few weeks before you arrived class there were almost no international travellers in Taipei – once you arrived the city was already overflowing with them. Of course, this does not change your experience, which we really wanted to be better, but I still wanted to mention it. Things are very different by now. I would like to let you know about a few things that have changed: 1 - After you and I met and partially based on your feedback, the person you complained about (Annie Kuan) does not work for LTL anymore. The school is now run and managed by Riona (whom you mention above as always ready to help and very kind, which I thought was very nice). 2 - We switched the class room location. 3 - We guarantee a maximum class size of 6 with an average of 3 students/class. I am very sorry about that mistake and as mentioned above, the person who organized classes with 7 students is not an LTL team member anymore. I hope maybe one day you can give us a try again – it will definitely be very different. Hope to see you on Flexi Classes, Andreas

Would recommend!

I've been taking classes from LTL for a few weeks now and I'm learning a lot! I love the flexibility to sign up for classes that fit my schedule. The learning materials and audio files help me to prepare for class before I meet with the teacher. I also love meeting with an actual teacher because it allows for feedback. I've had a few different teachers so far and I feel like I work better with some than others. I have also noticed some (minor) discrepancies between the materials and what is taught so I feel that is an area of improvement. Overall, I'd recommend anyone give it a try with their free trial and test it out themselves!

Thanks for your kind words about our Flexi Classes Linda. We're really happy you are enjoying them and we'll strive to make the content better and better. We appreciate the feedback. Best wishes, LTL Team

Teacher canceled 20 mins before class!

After issues with them refusing a refund for other problems. I decided to use up my classes. And I had a teacher cancel on the VERY FIRST class! scheduling the specific classes I need in ONE month is difficult. If you don't use up your classes quickly enough then they are TAKEN from you! (expire) I'm so tired of this company and I haven't even started! I love how they refused to give my money back but expect forgiveness when they didn't provide the service I paid for! Hypocrisy and a slap in the face! I strongly suggest using any other company!

LTL Language School 回复2022-05-27

Thanks for the review and I am very sorry for the class having been cancelled. Due to recent electricity shortages in some parts of China, the teachers neighbor hood had a blackout and it was not possible to find a replacement teacher in time. This is very rare, however it can happen as we do not control the electricity supply in China. I am very sorry that it happened for the very first class you took, especially with the other problems you had too. I understand very much that this was not a good impression and we will work hard to make up for that. I saw you had two other classes since then, one of which you did not turn up for and the other you took and I hope went well. A few notes though: 1) The class was cancelled two hours (not 20 minutes) before it took place (I checked the time of the cancellation email that was sent to you). 2) The credit you used to book that class was a free trial credit you had actually received on the 16th of March (two months ago) 3) Your credit was of course returned to you with an extra month of validity and you already used it to book another class. 4) There is no restriction on how long into the future you can book classes in Flexi Classes. You do not need to take all classes within one month. The validity only applies to by when you need to confirm the booking. Please check https://flexiclasses.com/credits/ for more details or email us on [email protected] if you have any questions.

Fraud

I have been trying to figure out how to get/use my three free classes. In this process you have to go to checkout and put a code in. But I was charged anyway. I have been charged $70 for what should have been three free classes not to mention it was advertised as $50! Also they told me I have 8 credits, but my account only says I have 5 credits! Total crap all in just one experience. There is so much messed up with this. I haven't even tried a class yet. But I was told they cannot (will not) refund the money. Even though I informed them IMMEDIATELY! I was going to purchase the $2000 bundle if the trial classes went well like I have done for my children with another company. Now I refuse to deal with something as corrupt as this. I will have to find another company to put my money into.

LTL Language School 回复2022-05-27

Dear Ms. Porter, You did not reply to the messages support sent you regarding this case, so let me summarize what actually happened here again. As you know what you wrote above is incorrect. You did get your free credits, you were not charged for them and you yourself chose to purchase and confirm to buy 5 new credits. You wrote this review on the 10th of May. Luckily we have records of in our system what actually happened, so let me recap that. 1) You signed up for a free trial account on the 16th of March (almost two months before this review) entering a discount code. You received three free trial credits with one month validity, were not charged and had your account fully in order. 2) You never used those trial credits and they expired on the 16th of April without ever having been used. 3) On the 8th of May, three weeks after the trial credits had expired you logged in again and purchased a new subscription for 5 credits. I am not sure how you were planning to “use” your free trial classes as you had already gotten them almost 2 months ago. You did not enter any discount code. You chose to buy a new subscription, saw the price, were asked to confirm if you want to buy that subscription, you confirmed and then were charged for and received 5 credits. 4) You wrote angry emails to us about regretting having purchased that subscription with similar content to this review. We then went to investigate to find out what actually happened and found out that what you were saying and what actually took place was quite different. Still, support extended the validity of the expired free trial classes by three months, so you could use them to book classes again. 5) You did not reply to our support message, however went on to write this review. Calling us a fraud is not just wrong but considering what actually happened an insult that I do take personal. Our system is not perfect. We have made mistakes and a software can also do things it is not expected to. It’s rare and but it can happen. In the few instances when it did, we of course apologize, offer free credits or whatever else is necessary to make it a good experience for the student in the end. However, in this case that’s not what happened and it is very well documented. I understand that you might have been busy with many things in your life and might not remember exactly when you signed up for a free trial, forgot to use the free credits, didn’t pay attention when confirming to purchase credits etc. However the IT system remembers and records this very well – so next time before you write a review like this, please check what actually happened first. Now that all this has been said and explained, the main aim is of course that we want you to have a good as possible experience with Flexi Classes going forward. I have seen that you used the credits you got to book classes and have taken one already. You didn’t fill out the feedback form, but I hope it went well. If you need help with anything, email us on [email protected] or just contact me personally by replying to the messages I sent you from my personal email previously. Margot, I and the whole Flexi Team will work very hard to try everything we can to make this still a positive experience for you. 好好学习。 Andreas

I am happy with my progress in Korean…

I am happy with my progress in Korean with my teacher, Narae Kim, she is super patient and encouraging. The school offers all four language and exam help that I am working on, Korean (TOPIK), Japanese (JLPT), Vietnamese and Chinese (HSK 4). However, for my timezone (ET) and level (beginner), it has been very difficult to find a teacher. It could be improved.

DONT FALL FOR FREE TRIALS!

I signed up for a free trial, I’ve already studied Chinese for a while and it’s not easy to keep up und find the time - the program looked good and I wanted to give it a shot. The problem is, when you’re already more advanced they don’t offer that many classes. So I never took a class and then just kind of forgot about it, and see when you get emails almost every day you don’t look at every single one, that’s a fact. Recently I found out that I have been paying money 50$ a month!!! For like 3 month or something, btw the credits you get, you can only use them for a certain amount of time ao ive been paying them like 150$ without EVER taking ONE class with them. I’m really disappointed that they don’t give you the money back in case of a misunderstanding like that - that really makes it seem like a fraud even tho it seemed like a legit school to me in the beginning.

Hi Jana. We make sure every student knows when they sign up for the trial we are a subscription based service and that a fee is charged after a month if not cancelled. We refunded your money and are always happy to extend the validity of your credits if genuine mistakes are made. We always make sure to be fully transparent with our students. As you'll see from the 100+ 5 star reviews we've received, there is nothing fraudulent about Flexi Classes. We hope you are continuing to make great progress with your language skills and wish you all the best.
