Payroll company that says they are not responsible for payroll
I hired Paychex to handle payroll and payroll tax filings because I expected a professional payroll company to ensure the correct forms were being filed. During onboarding, I was asked to complete paperwork that Paychex later used to determine my federal payroll tax filing status. However, Paychex filed Form 944 instead of Form 941 for my business. When the issue was discovered, Paychex placed the responsibility entirely on me rather than accepting any responsibility for its role in establishing and maintaining the filing structure. As a small business owner paying for payroll expertise, I found this very disappointing. To make matters worse, I have experienced poor communication throughout the process. Multiple emails and voicemail messages to Paychex representatives went unanswered. I also received conflicting information regarding the fees required to correct the issue. I understand mistakes can happen. What matters is how a company responds when they occur. Unfortunately, my experience has been that Paychex has been unwilling to accept responsibility for an issue involving payroll tax filings while attempting to charge me additional fees to correct it. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Paychex to other small business owners.
