Buyer beware: claims denied, admin nightmare.
I'll start by saying VisitorsCoverage themselves were easy to deal with and responsive. However, the actual underwriters for the policies they sell (IMG & United) are absolutely horrendous and in my case, totally worthless. If anything, they caused me more stress than if I just travelled without any insurance and used premium to put towards the enormous medical bills I paid out of pocket. I'm a US expat and visited the US last year, choosing the Platinum plan for the most peace of mind. I had a serious health issue about 20 years ago but have been healthy since, unfortunately it unexpectedly reoccured while I was on my trip. My policy had a provision for acute reoccurrence of a pre-existing condition - and my doctors confirmed that this was acute - but my claims were still denied, even for the minimum expenses to stabilise me until I could get care in my country of residence. The hospital tried to help, and I used VisitorsCoverage's claim service, but it didn't matter because IMG stalled for months. There's no chance of you as a patient talking to a human being there, either - you really are just a number and the claims process on their side is extremely opaque, with virtually no information. I went to an in-network hospital and I gave them my insurance info before receiving treatment, it made no difference. The system is rigged in favour of insurers, who offer no value at all. A year later, I'm still getting bills from the hospital. I feel lucky in this case I could get home without going tens of thousands out of pocket or worse, because even though I thought I was doing the right thing by choosing a policy specifically for expats, it didn't stop me getting stung by the system.
