Reddit: One of the Most Toxic Platforms Online
Reddit is far from a place for free speech. Moderators can easily control the narrative by filtering posts and comments without you ever realising it. Content is often deleted or hidden without notice, and you’ll only discover it if you check in private browsing mode. Users can be banned for the smallest disagreement or for breaking one of Reddit’s ever-changing rules or "special rules" for a subreddit. Some moderators quietly filter out targeted users’ content rather than banning them outright, possibly to avoid backlash. Even minor differences of opinion or innocent contributions can attract instant downvotes, fueled by a strong tribal instinct and “cult-like” groupthink. Genuine discussion is often replaced by echo chambers that reward conformity over curiosity. Active users might even be wrongly flagged as bots, while others escape this entirely. Overall, Reddit feels less like a space for open discussion and more like a controlled environment where dissent is quietly erased. Occasionaly, there will be useful discussions but they are becoming harder to find and even harder to take part in without it feeling or becoming toxic.
