Save your eyes
If you wear glasses or contacts, do not miss this site! I don't know how I managed not to know all this stuff for so long. The only reason I started googling vision therapy is because both my husband and I are very nearsighted (myopic). Some months ago, he had a scare with his retina that is ongoing. Namely, the myopia means that the eyeball has gotten longer, so his retina is at increased risk of detachment and now it is hit or miss. We are both patients at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Center, one of the premier institutes in the world. I did my graduate work at Hopkins, btw. But the doctors aren't doing anything for him except waiting to see if the retina detaches so they can do surgery. So, I found Jake's site. And I started experimenting on myself. His recommendations to not use my regular glasses or contacts for close up work such as typing or reading have made a huge difference in just one month. I was edging up to a higher prescription at -10.00, and now I am solidly at -9.50. Now I added my husband to the experiment - the first thing I had him do was get a separate pair of prescription glasses for computer use. It has already reduced eyestrain, and we found through vision charts at home that his distance glasses were too strong, which was hastening the vision problem. I am pretty unhappy that we didn't get this info from Hopkins because it is clear that it is helping. And grateful that Jake took the time to share all this info.
