Buyer Beware When Purchasing from Viwoods AiPaper

Caveat Emptor: Buyer Beware When Purchasing from Viwoods AiPaper I gave Viwoods every reasonable opportunity to resolve this privately before publishing this review. They chose not to. What follows is simply an account of my experience. I hate writing poor reviews, and they are an exception, but this one is well earned. I liked my Viwoods AiPaper and had previously spoken positively about it. The original cover eventually began deteriorating. The stylus holder became loose enough that the $100 stylus repeatedly fell out and was ultimately damaged. I did not ask Viwoods to replace the cover or reimburse me for the stylus. I simply ordered another cover. While traveling, I accidentally ordered an AiPaper Mini cover instead of the full-size AiPaper cover. I do not own an AiPaper Mini. The cover was new, unused and of no use to me. I contacted Viwoods approximately six days beyond its seven-day accessory return period. I did not request a refund. I asked to exchange the unused cover for the correct full-size cover, offered to pay the difference and was willing to pay return shipping. Viwoods declined. They initially offered a 20% discount on another cover. Only after an extended, time-consuming conversation did they increase the offer to 50%. I acknowledge that offer, but it did not resolve the issue. I wasn't asking for free merchandise. I was asking to exchange an unused product after an honest ordering mistake and purchase the more expensive cover I actually needed. The way Viwoods handled the conversation made me increasingly doubtful that a human with authority to exercise judgment had actually reviewed the circumstances. When I asked whether management had personally considered my request, Viwoods did not answer. Instead, it stated that the matter had been "reviewed and enforced under our corporate customer support guidelines." I cannot know whether a human reviewed the matter, but their responses did little to demonstrate that anyone considered the circumstances beyond applying the seven-day rule. Viwoods described covers as "consumable items" and compared them to ordinary personal gear or footwear. Planned obsolescence? Their characterization raises a reasonable question. My original cover's stylus holder deteriorated enough that it could no longer securely hold the stylus. The stylus repeatedly fell out, landed on the nib and was damaged. I spent approximately $100 replacing it and never asked Viwoods to reimburse me. My concern is no longer the cover. It is the customer service standing behind their products. The issue was never the price. It was the refusal to apply reasonable judgment to a straightforward situation involving an unused product, a customer willing to pay all associated costs, and a customer who had previously liked and recommended the brand. What makes this particularly unfortunate is how easily it could have ended differently. Viwoods could have resolved it almost immediately with a modest exercise of discretion. I would have returned the unused cover at my expense, paid the difference and come away with an even more favorable impression of the company. Instead, an extremely simple customer-service issue became a surprisingly time-consuming exchange and a substantially larger issue than the problem itself. We live in an age when companies, particularly technology companies, increasingly use artificial intelligence to communicate with customers. I have no idea whether AI played any role in my correspondence with Viwoods, and I am not suggesting that it did. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Whether the responses came from a person, a computer, or some combination of the two, the experience left me with a much simpler conclusion: The problem isn't artificial intelligence. It's real indifference. The facts remain simple: I ordered the wrong cover. It was unused. I contacted Viwoods six days beyond its stated return period. I requested an exchange, not a refund. I offered to pay shipping and the price difference. Viwoods declined. Their offer moved from 20% to 50% only after a lengthy exchange. When I asked whether management had personally reviewed the circumstances, they did not answer. I liked my AiPaper. This experience changed my opinion of Viwoods. I am returning to my reMarkable. Other customers can decide for themselves what this experience says about the company standing behind the product. RL
