Circular

Warning: Please read the fine print before subscribing

I subscribed to a MacBook Pro M2 14” (512GB) with Circular in October 2023, paying $115 per month for 24 months (a total of $2,760). I assumed, as with most long-term contracts, that the laptop would be mine after the term ended. However, I later learned that the device always remains Circular’s property unless the “Purchase Option” is exercised. Because I had already sold the laptop (due to misunderstanding this term), Circular informed me that this was a breach of contract and even described it as an “act of theft.” I was then required to pay a lump sum of $1,329.74 to buy it out — on top of the $2,760 I had already paid. This brings the total cost to over $4,000, which is much higher than the retail price of the same laptop (~$2,600–$2,800) and well above its second-hand market value. I asked to continue paying monthly (around $100+), but this was denied. The only option offered was a two-month split ($700 + $629) and then three-month split ($443.25 + $443.25 + $443.24), which was still far from reasonable compared to my original subscription arrangement. On top of that, I was warned that failure to pay may lead to debt collection and a negative credit listing with Experian, which was very stressful to receive after being a paying customer for two years. What you should know before signing up: This is not an ownership plan; it is a rental scheme. Even after 24 months, the device is still Circular’s property. You must pay an additional lump-sum “Purchase Option” fee if you want to keep the device. Selling the device before that is treated as a violation of contract. Non-payment may result in debt collection and credit bureau reporting. I also noticed that my earlier review was removed, which is disappointing as customers should have the right to share their experiences. Please be fully aware of these terms before subscribing. What looks like an affordable monthly plan can become a very costly commitment if you misunderstand the conditions.
