Expensive Upgrade That Left Me Unable to Use The Bike I wanted to on the Trainer
I purchased the Wahoo XDR Freehub and through axle kit to use my SRAM Force AXS 12-speed bike with a KICKR V5. Unfortunately, the experience has been extremely disappointing and has fundamentally undermined my confidence in both the product and Wahoo's customer support. The drivetrain operates flawlessly on my bike's wheelset using the exact same SRAM XG-1270 10-36 cassette. However, after installing the official Wahoo XDR freehub, the drivetrain became noisy, rough and inconsistent across much of the cassette, particularly in the smaller cogs. Despite spending considerable time checking installation, indexing and micro-adjustments, I was unable to achieve anything close to the smooth shifting experienced on the bike itself. What makes this particularly frustrating is that I purchased the official Wahoo solution specifically to allow compatibility between a premium SRAM AXS drivetrain and a premium smart trainer. Instead, I am now in a position where I am effectively unable to use the bike I actually want to ride on a trainer that cost around £1,000. The entire purpose of buying the XDR conversion kit was to make the setup work seamlessly, yet it has introduced a problem that did not previously exist. The support experience has been equally disappointing. Rather than investigating the issue in detail, the response was largely to purchase additional hardware, continue experimenting with setup changes, or seek help from a bike mechanic. The burden, cost and effort of resolving the problem has felt entirely one-sided. What is especially concerning is that a quick search reveals numerous reports from other riders experiencing very similar issues when combining SRAM 12-speed drivetrains with Wahoo trainers. Despite this, support appeared unwilling to acknowledge the possibility of a broader compatibility or tolerance issue, instead treating it solely as an individual bike setup problem. I originally chose Wahoo because of its reputation for class-leading customer service and support. Based on my experience, that reputation is undeserved. The product may work perfectly for some users, but when issues arise, the support provided falls well short of what I would expect from a premium brand. For a product ecosystem costing well over £1,000, I expected compatibility, accountability and meaningful support. Instead, I have spent additional money on official Wahoo components and ended up with a setup that performs worse than before.
