Extremely disappointing experience .. cancelled at the last minute and left stranded
I had an extremely disappointing experience with the Hotel Markischer Hof in Berlin, Germany and would strongly advise future guests to think twice before booking here. On the day of check-in, at around 5 p.m., the hotel cancelled my confirmed reservation, allegedly due to water damage. Whatever the reason, cancelling someone's accommodation at such an incredibly late hour, on the very day they are supposed to check in, is completely unacceptable when no alternative accommodation or meaningful assistance is offered. I was in Berlin for a two-day business trip, and this cancellation left me stranded with nowhere to stay. I immediately tried to find another hotel, Airbnb, or even a hostel, but everything I could find was fully booked. I also tried contacting hotels directly, without success. At that time of day, finding alternative accommodation at such short notice was practically impossible. What made this experience even worse was the hotel's complete lack of communication after cancelling my stay. My messages were ignored, and the hotel did not even initiate the refund process. I eventually received my money back only because Agoda responded to my messages and intervened to process the refund. I understand that unexpected problems can happen, including water damage. However, what I find unacceptable is how the hotel handled the situation: cancelling at 5 p.m. on check-in day, providing no effective assistance, ignoring my messages, and leaving me to deal with the consequences entirely on my own. A hotel should understand the responsibility that comes with accepting a reservation. At the very least, guests deserve timely communication, a proper explanation, and reasonable assistance when a booking is cancelled at the last minute. Getting my money back through Agoda was the bare minimum, not a satisfactory resolution to the situation. A refund does not compensate for the stress, wasted time, and uncertainty of being left without accommodation during an important business trip. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this hotel. The complete lack of support and communication when things went wrong was unacceptable, and I would not risk booking here again.
