I've bought a GMKtec M3 Ultra (Intel 12th Core i7) and added my own RAM (2 × 32GB) and two M.2 SSDs — careful here, as the board takes two different flavours: one SATA and one PCIe (NVMe), so make sure you buy accordingly or one drive simply won't be recognised. So far so good. I needed a compact PC for university, running Proxmox bare metal with a bunch of virtual machines and containers, plus a separate Windows 11 partition for Type 2 hypervisor work. This little thing just delivers: plug in a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and you've got a surprisingly capable machine running multiple VMs simultaneously without breaking a sweat. And the price? $299 for the bare machine — an absolute no-brainer. Add your own RAM and storage to taste, and you've built something genuinely powerful for well under what any comparable pre-configured system would cost you.
