Stop Scammers in Their Tracks
I recently reported a domain registered through GNAME that was being actively used to impersonate a legitimate South African payment service and target members of the public with a traffic-fine phishing scam. I submitted a detailed abuse report to GNAME, including the fraudulent domain, an explanation of the scam and supporting screenshots. I was extremely impressed with the response. GNAME investigated the complaint and placed the domain on Client Hold, effectively disabling the fraudulent website, within a very short period of time. (Less than 8 hours) Online scams succeed partly because criminals can quickly register domains, impersonate legitimate organisations and disappear before meaningful action is taken. Registrars therefore have an important role to play when credible evidence of abuse is brought to their attention. In this instance, GNAME's abuse-reporting process was straightforward and, most importantly, resulted in action. As someone who reported this primarily to prevent other members of the public from becoming victims, I greatly appreciate GNAME taking the complaint seriously and responding decisively.
