MoviePass

Trash Business Model and Trash Service. Stay Away.

I used this over 5 years ago when it first came out for about 2 years and it saved me a lot on movie tickets. But not without frustrations. The issue was their app occasionally froze and not letting me load the credit card making me miss movies and have to come back and try again on different days. It went out of business because its business model made no sense. They were supposed to make money off selling your data to movie and theater companies, but never found a way to get any useful and sellable analytics out of it. 5 years later it came back, so I tried it again and got early access as a return customer. This time their app is way more reliable, but their credit card is not. There is no one to call when you have issues, instead you have to message support through their app. I spent an hour chatting with an agent and missed three movie showings trying to get their card to work but it just kept declining it. Fortunately, it worked for about two months so I was able to see 8 movie showings with my wife for $40 total instead of $100+, but I canceled it after this terrible experience. Their business model does not seem sustainable because once again they are relying on data collection to make money, as well as hoping that most people with a subscription will see less than one movie a month, but who is going to buy the data, and how many people with monthly movie subscriptions will on average see less than one movie a month? Moreover, their service system is terrible and error-prone. You can’t buy tickets in advance, you have to open an app when within a few feet of the movie theater (and hope the app doesn’t have issues at that time and place), then it temporarily loads the credit card with the correct amount (so now you hope and pray the app loaded the card for the correct amount and that Mastercard doesn’t screw something up). It’s an overly complicated system with too many points of failure. It should let you buy tickets online in advance, or partner with big movie chains to give you movie ticket vouchers. Relying on an app that must be accessed only when at the theater and a credit card that must be used within a 30-minute time frame is just stupid. Their CEO is a diversity hire moron who has no clue how to run an effective business, but please go buy his book that he promoted to all MoviePass customers talking about how white and Asian entrepreneurs with successful tech businesses were keeping him down as a black entrepreneur. Major theater chains like AMC and Regel now have subscription models and although they cost twice as much as MoviePass, they are nearly 100% reliable and more importantly, actually generate revenue for their companies and are a successful business model. My advice to anyone who wants a movie subscription, stick to the ones offered by your local movie theaters and pay a little more to avoid the frustration. MoviePass will be bankrupt soon anyways and the more people who sign up to use their “disservice”, the quicker they will go out of business, which is the opposite of how any real business works.
