ShutEye

I loved Shut eye until they removed REM stage sleep from stats

I loved Shut eye … until they removed REM sleep stage from their data review. I can all but guarantee it was not the reason claimed and it was very much an issue with money - ie., ppl forgoing sleep studies and certain entities losing money specifically as a result. Claiming that they (shut eye and some of similar apps apparently) removed it because it wasn’t always accurate (just the REM was an issue for accuracy? Hmmm. Mmmkay) and it caused “undue anxiety” for PTs. So thoughtful they were soooo concerned about PTs and their anxiety but aren’t concerned about complaints I’ve seen from other feedback claiming accuracy issues on awake vs not, etc. Yeah, okay. I work in medical research and this seems like a lip service excuse and someone stepped in per se and paid a tad bit of money to the app (or made a “very convincing argument” - ahem) to ensure this option was removed. It’s very suspicious in my opinion and experience … knowing how this industry works 🤨. Does this app (and any other like it) carry the risk of picking up on another human in the room within feet of you? Of course! It’s not perfect. It’s an app!!! But ironically my experience for two years was that when using the “gentle alarm” DAILY (which literally watches for sleep stage and is ONLY to go off during light sleep stage) NEVER AWOKE me during REM or deep sleep (yes, you can tell when you’re awoken during light vs REM vs deep). Crazy how it worked sooo well. If the apps REM recording was SOOO problematic I guarantee it would have awoken me at least a few times during REM - at least that’s what the stats would lead you to believe, right? Out of 730 nights the app never woke me during REM. Strange. Yet the claim is that it is inaccurate enough for REM stage recording that they removed it altogether - because supposedly sometimes ppl were in it and it wasn’t showing, and other times they weren’t and it recorded they were 🤔. And it was “so stressful to PTs” and “that a sleep study is a better option.” But no concerns about the others stages, their inaccuracies and patient anxiety. Soooo, you make the call. But I don’t buy the BS excuse at all. Once again, we as adults are just little peons who are not allowed to make decisions for ourselves, are condescended to, and told what’s best for us under the guise of “helping us,” when in reality it’s ALL about making sure big pharma, medical industries etc make their MONEY from us. Not a shock, but SOOO disappointed since again, I found this app very beneficial for several reasons for the last two years. I would recommend except I personally think REM stage is a vital piece of the puzzle. If you’re not looking to keep track of your sleep stages. Then sure, go for it 👍. Of course I keep reading about how ppl have issues with cancellation and charges. I’m a bit nervous about that now. We shall see.
