More Effort Than It's Worth, Plus Undisclosed Fees
I am the single employee in my company, I was spending 20-30 minutes/week working on my own payroll. I decided to join Paychex to do my payroll for me. They gave me a great deal of 6 months free and a good monthly rate. I signed up and it seemed to go smoothly, I worked with people who sounded like they knew what they were doing. That was the end of the good service. After the first month, I got a $60 charge for something. I reached out and asked and they said it was because I didn't run payroll that month. Apparently they have a minimum of one payroll/month or they charge. I said I had a deal with no charges for 6 months and they reversed it. the next month I was sure to make a payroll, but I was hit with another $60 charge. This time it was because it didn't make it before the deadline (the 28th). I transfer the money myself, they don't see it so there was no delay in the funds, yet they charged me a fee for not making the payroll in time to make the transfer. The third month was January and they sent me my tax information, which was incorrect. They didn't have my pre-Paychex amounts correct (too much tax was charged). When they attempted to fix it, they actually double taxed me and submitted the double amount to the IRS causing my account to be over drawn, which incurred fees. After emailing and calling several people (no less than 8 different people), they were able to sort it out and refunded my account. After all this, I realized I spent more time fixing their problems than doing my payroll myself. I cancelled my service after four months. Shortly after, I received a bill for $400 for all kinds of miscellaneous charges. Now it is three months later and I'm still trying to recover my $400 (after no less than 10 emails). They keep saying the request has been submitted and it will take 3-5 business days to process the refund after the request has been approved. The problem is that the people working for Paychex are not smart, they don't understand the numbers, and there isn't one dedicated person who knows your account. They all seem like they want to help, but I don't think any of them are actually educated in finance or accounting. I recommend using a local small business to do your payroll needs. Keep it local and help small businesses. Plus you can go to their office if you need help. Learn as you go...
