Hungryroot

Traumatized by Hungryroot delivery

Pushed myself to write my first ever review here because keeping silent about my deep frustration witu Hungryroot customer service has been taking a toll on me. This week has given me enough challenges as I spend it mostly in the hospital, realizing after Wednesday that I would not recover in time to pick up my order next Monday. I really wanted to love the idea of Hungryroot’s meal kits to help me save time and learn some healthy meal prep recipes. However, I am surprised (and fairly disgusted) to see the greed behind this seemingly customer-oriented business. Warning to fellow working professionals: if you foresee any travel, family or other life events, know that Hungryroot will create a totally unecessary nightmare in your life as you are unable to cancel delivery past the Wednesday cutoff date (Also note that finding the option to cancel a subscription is considerably on the website more difficult than signing up, which should tell you something itself). *IMPORTANT: Hungryroot uses a separate company for deliveries, but it seems that company is very closely tied to Hungryroot’s ownership and serves as an excuse for Hungryroot to innocently hold their hands up and say they cannot change the delivery address or order past the unreasonably large cutoff window, even with a 3-day notice.* This is even more unbelievable considering that I begged them to keep my money and keep or throw away all my food this week and just not deliver the perishable package to my doorstep since I am in the hospital. I have simultaneously been experimenting with other meal prep companies in San Diego (Sunday Meal Prep, Meal Prep Co, Prept), and ALL of them not only honored their request, but they happily volunteered to credit me for the week of undelivered groceries. Hungryroot made this request impossible on the website, and when I eventually reached their delivery company’s management team (who is obviously connected with them to allow Hungryroot to pretend they have no control or responsibility over your delivery requests), I was assured by two separate agents that this package would NOT be delivered, but it was anyway (with pictures of my apartment number and the package!). I even desperately edited my delivery note and address to delete the entry code and unit number and write DO NOT DELIVER instead), and their delivery pictures somehow still captured my apartment number that they should not have known, and a picture of the package left to rot in the lobby for me to helplessly view while still in the hospital. I am staying at an Airbnb this month and am certain this will ruin my good relationship with my Airbnb host and probably future rent opportunities. Note that delivering perishable meet to an address without consent is considered VANDALISM. I will be immunocompromised returning from the hospital next week and pray that I will not get sick simply trying to dispose of this delivery I spent all day requesting that they do not deliver (not to mention any relationship or legal consequence I may be burdened with next week thanks to Hungryroot). With Hungryroot, you are not allowed to have a sick relative, business travel, or God forbid hospital injury without worrying about what to do with the rotting meat that will arrive at your doorstep whether you like it or not, even if you give them a 3-4 day cancellation request and explain your situation desperately with management. Working professionals, travelers, busy people, anyone who might have a family emergency or unexpected illness, I pray that you learn from my experience and STAY AWAY from businesses with completely unecessary greedy practices. If you sign up, know that you will live in constant anxiety of a long term commitment to be at your doorstep every Sunday, and Hungryroot will make any exceptions to this impossible unlike every other meal prep company. Saving time and giving freedom should be the heart of meal prep companies, or at least some reasonable exceptions in extenuating circumstances like an Emergency Room visit. My subscription to Hungryoot has made life harder rather than more convenient, and I find myself anxious about this delivery commitment at the end of every wekeend. I can’t tell you how desperate I was for this kind of solution; how much I really wanted to become a long term customer of Hungryroot’s meal kits, and I never thought I would experience service so unimaginably terrible from a company that I would actually bother to create an account to write this review just so I can sleep better at night knowing I haven’t kept silent about my experience. Shame, shame, shame on you, Hungryroot.
