We don’t force VLC—VLC is often recommended because it supports a wider range of codecs and containers. QuickTime does not support all formats/codecs that can be provided by the supported websites (for example, some MP4 files may use video/audio codecs that QuickTime can’t decode).
In many cases you can choose a QuickTime-friendly format (e.g., H.264/AAC in MP4) depending on what the source site makes available. If you share the video link and your current output settings, we can advise which format will be compatible on your Mac and what options you have for conversion.
