Ask & Embla

Plating wore off after only two weeks of wearing

Edit/Update: I have updated my initial review after the swift and kind customer service I received from Ask & Embla after raising the issue and their effort to make up for the poor quality of the item I purchased. The reason I have only upgraded the 2 star review to 3 stars however is because I would still wish to see evidence of improvement to the jewellery in future. So for those considering purchasing items from Ask & Embla please make careful note of the following: When looking at the item you are thinking of buying, under the item details check/expand the ‘Style & Material’ info. If it states that the item’s material is “White Bronze Plating with hand brushed patina and anti-tarnish coating” you absolutely must NOT wear this jewellery in the shower or get into any other contact with water as the coating will start to wear out almost immediately. This won’t be such an issue if you have the gold coloured option as brass will be a similar colour but it will seriously ruin the silver coloured jewellery. Meanwhile, if the item’s material states “925 Silver plating with antiquing lacquer” it should be fine to leave in while showering or swimming. I have had the silver coloured synthesis ring stacks left permanently in my ears for a few months now without ever taking them out and I have no problem with the finish wearing out. If only all the jewellery had this coating. I will still be ordering from A&E in the future because I love the style but in my opinion metal jewellery should be able to be worn in the shower without the coating rubbing off straight away. For now we just have to accept that white bronze items have to be taken out before showering. This is an issue that I’d really like A&E to improve in the future if they really want to stand out as a company offering high quality, durable jewellery. Original Review: I ordered two of their charms plus 9 synthesis earrings - an order that would be around $500 (NZD) if full price not on sale. After about two weeks the silver coat on my bone charm started to wear off and now it’s more of a brass colour. Why does this happen? I am really disappointed because I love their designs and wanted to order more charms but if they are all going to end up more of a brass/gold colour rather than silver then I won’t bother. Its misleading because it states in the material description that the coating is “anti-tarnish” yet after just two weeks of wearing them they look like I’ve had them for ten years.
