The $39 Price Comes With Strings Attached

I signed my daughter up for DriversEd.com because it came highly recommended, but my experience has been disappointing. The advertised $39 price is tied to enrollment in a "free" roadside assistance trial that automatically renews for $5/month unless you cancel. While that's disclosed, what wasn't obvious was how difficult it would be to actually cancel. The roadside assistance cannot be canceled from the parent account—it has to be done through the student's account. After logging into the student account, we discovered the roadside membership was still "processing," so there wasn't even a membership ID available to cancel the trial. In other words, we wanted to opt out immediately, but the system wouldn't let us. That combination of requiring enrollment in an auto-renewing subscription, limiting cancellation to a different account, and then preventing immediate cancellation because the membership isn't fully set up feels like an unnecessary obstacle. It left me feeling like I had signed up for something I didn't want and couldn't promptly cancel. The driver's education course itself may be perfectly fine, but the enrollment and subscription experience left a very poor first impression. I would much rather pay a few dollars more for a course that doesn't bundle an auto-renewing subscription with this kind of cancellation process. I hope DriversEd.com either makes the roadside assistance truly optional at checkout or allows customers to cancel it immediately from either the parent or student account.
