Previously Excellent, but This Over-Roasted Batch Should Never Have Been Shipped
I have to give this batch two stars (if not one). This was not our first time purchasing this coffee from Volcanica, and all our previous orders were excellent. We especially enjoyed its many layers of flavor and the complexity that made it so interesting.
Unfortunately, this batch appears to have been severely over-roasted. The beans’ appearance and aroma suggested as much, and the brewed coffee had an extremely bitter taste that completely overwhelmed all its other flavors.
To salvage it, we adjusted the grind size, water temperature, and brewing method, but nothing sufficiently reduced the overpowering bitterness. Given our excellent prior experiences with this coffee, we are extremely disappointed (and frankly outraged) that a batch of such obviously subpar quality passed the roasting team’s quality control and was shipped to customers. It is difficult not to wonder whether the decision was made to sell the over-roasted beans rather than discard them. Whatever happened, this batch should never have been sent to a customer.

We apologize that the coffee you ordered did not meet your expectations, and we are contacting you directly to make this right.
I love this coffee! It is absolutely the best low-acid coffee I've had. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for the packaging.
I buy the ground coffee, and the packaging is problematic. The opening at the top is just too small. It's difficult and annoying to scoop out the coffee grounds, particularly if the bag is half-filled or less.
If you buy the ground coffee, I highly recommend investing in a canister for it. Save yourself the hassle of these bags.
Great coffee. Great delivery service.
I live in California. We have tons of great roasters here. But as with most businesses in California, their products generally cost quite a bit more. I worried about ordering from a roaster on the other side of the country, but Volcanica is great. Delivery is fast and easy. I get text alerts a few days before my order asking if I want to change it. And another one the instant the order arrives.
Highly recommend!
Great customer service. Easy to change subscription via text before a shipment is sent. Coffee is very smooth and robust. Many options to chose from. The costarican Peaberry is my favorite.
Prompt service. Kenya AA did not meet my taste in other companies coffee. In my opinion, Kenya AA needs to be medium/dark to dark roast. This brings out the floral and fruit notes and is less acidic.
As a subscription customer, Volcanica is always prompt and accurate with thier deliveries. I appreciate that they email me before they ship to ensure that my order has not changed.
Quality comes from superb beans. Beans are fresh with pleasant aroma and very palatable to your taste buds.
Because of stomache issues I ordered the Low Acid version. Wonderful, leaves no acid after taste or bitterness.
Great cup of coffee.
Coffee is phenomenal. I’m a mad scientist and blend several different dark roasts together, Guatemala Antigua, Costa Rica Tarrazu,Papa New Guinea Reserve and on occasion a peaberry. Although peaberry is not a dark roast, it provides a unique tone and flavor to the blend. I have been ordering Volcanica religiously every month for the last several years. It’s always on time and never had a complaint.
