A firmware update cannot brick the device. Unless it's physically damaged you can simply reflash it with a USB cable. Reach out to support for help
You are not forced to update. Konnected works 100% locally with Home Assistant and HA decided to remove the legacy integration. You could simply just not update Home Assistant or install the legacy integration as a custom component.
