Hello, everyone! Luke & Phil, thank you so much for this learning website! I originally heard about MB from your videos, they really helped me! That’s when I decided to check the website out. Mandarin has never been easier. I have studied some basic stuff, like sentence structure, hanzi, etc., but it’s good to refresh the stuff you already know and strengthen it. Currently living in China and working my way through this course. It's been a huge help in leveling up my Chinese quickly and I know that I've only just started to reap the benefits of the MBP method.
After several months of using the Mandarin Blueprint, I am already reading entire sentences of only Chinese characters. I am having trouble believing it myself. This method works extremely well, and I recommend everyone learn Chinese this way. It's a daunting task, but you'll be surprised how easy and natural it becomes!

I like it a lot. I started about 2 months ago and I am now starting to read sentences without Pinyin.
It is a real interesting method to memorize characters.
I have read about a similar approach for learning any language, but I did not quite understand back then. Now with the Movie Hanzi method I understand more.
I like that it is a bit challenging to come up with actors, probs and movies.
My movies do not all work, with the guided Videos and that is ok for me. At the beginning it is a very good guideline to follow, just replacing the actors, props and scenes from the guide videos🤣🤣 Because of that I had a few scenes that did not make any sense and I might need to review them🤣🤣. I think the best part would be the community you enter that helps you a lot

Some pros and cons here with this program. Lets start with the pros (ultimately a yes when given a choice of platforms/choices to choose from):
1. There is plenty of comprehensible input to learn from! No shortage there! This is great because you don't have to go elsewhere to obtain reading/listening skills.
2. The Hanzi Movie Method used to retain Hanzi characters works! Great way to learn (not just memorize) Hanzi characters!
3. Extensive vocabulary to be learned!
4. Learn at your own pace with no pressure to move fast. The course is set up to move at your convenience so you can learn as fast or slow as desired.
5. The co-creators, Luke and Phil, have great personalities and do a fantastic job conveying messages when explaining how characters are used amongst other things. Great communication skills!
6. I am now a Chinese speaking American! I can't get enough of that feeling and because of that I will continue to pursue the course.
Now for the cons (not a reason to turn away, just some flaws I've noticed):
1. The Chinese culture of humility and being humble is constantly preached throughout the course but the creators, 2 white males (one being from the UK- the OG white male) charge in-house 4 year university tuition rates if seeking a tutor for help. Community college tuition rates solely for the online courses. The reason being is that fluency is promised 3x faster along with a method of teaching that "doesn't exist in other schools" (not having been to every Chinese teaching school, so can't confirm for every school in the world). A bit pricy when viewed from this perspective. All surrounded by a teaching method. The amount and type of content can be replicated in any other online course.
2. The sequence of teaching is a bit contradicting. Acquiring the language via speaking/listening (immersion) is emphasized yet you start out by learning the equivalent to the alphabet in Hanzi. It was acknowledged that children learn to speak and comprehend by listening before going to school, yet here we are learning parts of Hanzi characters and full characters that are never used alone as words. I get that this helps with translation if struggling to remember. ALSO: quite a few common words (喜欢 & 告诉 to name a couple) are not taught together as 1 word! Why learn literally 1 half of a word in 1 lesson and the other half a few lesson later with the full word?
3. The Traverse App, in my experience (and I can't stress that enough), has too many glitches and/or coding/errors to rely on completely. Anytime I've contacted the owner/support the only thing that happened was my problem being acknowledged, never fixed. Sometimes the pictures show up, sometimes they don't. For some reason the font changes ever so often making it difficult to read the characters when you're used to the basic font (problem for beginners getting familiar).
4. There are some Vault sentence flashcards that have implied words in the English translation but don't show up in the Mandarin portion. Example: "wo keneng yao wan dian zou." which translates (according to the card) to "I might be a little late today." The word for today is "jintian" but not in the Chinese part! While normally implied and understood in a conversation, as a beginner you're paying attention to every word trying to translate it. It is confusing when you're given the English to translate only to find you were "missing" a word. Quite a few cards are like this forcing an extra step of memorization if you want to get the translation correct. Many other small typos in the translations with these cards. Nothing prohibiting you from learning.
5. Lots of motivational speeches and pressure from the creators to stick with the program. I suppose I'm just not part of that target market since I'm extremely self-motivated to begin with. I had to unsubscribe from the emails since that's all they were. Felt a mild tone of a guilt trip if not reviewing every day. Its fine to take a day or 2 off, just don't make it a habit.
In conclusion, paying for the online course if worth it. You can use LanguaTalk for an AI assistant for speaking/typing practice. Its made specifically for language learning. Then, you can take what you've learned to iTalki or a local Chinese restaurant and they'll tell you you're correct "more or less" (personal preference), but never wrong. An outside source to perform a quality check would be beneficial. I see room for improvement while acknowledging I have come leaps and bounds from self-studying. The downloadable stories help a lot!

MB is great! I've been learning Mandarin for more than 20 years (on-off) and got to a level HSK4-5, when I stayed some time in China. But even if I was able to read all Harry Potters :-)) in Chinese that time, the HanZi never really stuck for long, had to keep practicing like almost every day that half of the knowledge doesn't just fly out of the window again.
With MB's structural learning I'm finally learning the tones properly.
Moreover the method is so much fun and I'm sure that I'll use it for learning other stuff as well. Thanx guys

Excellent course and I am so pleased with the concrete results! At 73, I decided to learn Chinese for my personal enjoyment and to prove to myself I can achieve mastering this language. This course is expertly designed to allow that to happen. It is superbly well organized, so that the individual can DAILY see their progress; learning characters with correct tones, pronounciation and meaning by using their Hanzi Movie Method. I know I will be speaking at a B2 level by continuing through the full course.

I have spent many months testing various Mandarin courses, textbooks and online videos but never really got going because they were either too simple, too boring or too academic. With Mandarin Blueprint Pro, things have changed completely! I now have a laser-sharp focus on my goal of reaching fluency in Mandarin, and it is no longer an unobtainable target in a distant future.
It is clear that the two authors have put a huge effort into creating the course. As Luke and Phil are not natives, they are using scientifically proved methods to break down the barriers which keep many people from learning Mandarin, particularly the characters. It is not only very efficient but also a lot of fun as you feel a clear progress just after a few hours of studying. Help is always available if you get stuck, either through the support team, the huge additional content of explanatory videos, or the big community of other learners.
I highly recommend Mandarin Blueprint Pro for anyone interested in learning Mandarin: It is worth every dollar, and I believe it is by far the easiest way to acquire the language.

You may find this review of the Mandarin Blueprint course rather long-winded, but given my potentially rather unique circumstances, hopefully worthwhile.
I am currently 73 years young and being retired, I did extensive online research into the best methods to learn Chinese. Basically, most reputable sites pointed to the Mandarin Blueprint method so … I jumped in. Given the massive amounts of simply world-class learning materials that are both hugely valuable now and, indeed, superb value in the long term, I was happy to purchase their Lifetime Membership.
Here’s where it gets interesting. I started and … not for me! I could not get my head around why I needed to learn characters rather than purely the Chinese words. After all, I only wanted to speak the language, not read it (spoiler alert - BIG MISTAKE). So I gave up after a few days. I thought that spending all that money on a lifetime membership would “force” me to stick with the course, but no! What did I do and what could I do?
I spent about a year in that “wilderness” known as YouTube and/or the many language learning apps available. Yes, I learned a few words, yes I forgot most of them and yes, I wasted about a year. Recently, however, I came across a YouTube video done by Luke from Mandarin Blueprint entitled “Why You Keep Quitting Chinese (And How To Fix It)” and after watching the whole 55 minutes twice, decided there and then to actually buckle down and “properly” learn Chinese via their tried and extensively tested method. I simply can’t believe the results! After a few short months, I am not only enjoying my studies, I am not only learning massively, not only remembering all I have learnt but I am now actually reading Chinese sentences! Keep in mind that at my age, I am sometimes forgetting my native English words and here I am, reading Chinese sentences! What is fascinating is that this learning process is getting easier and faster the more I progress! The more characters I learn, the more and easier it is to learn words which means I can read more sentences which, in turn, means I can learn and understand more words etc, etc, etc. Did I say AMAZING?
Next year, i.e. 2026, my plans are to get married to my long-suffering fiancé and move to China later that year. My fiancé, in turn, promises to help with my language once I am past the beginner’s level! I couldn’t be more excited about this new chapter in my life and, of course, intend to be able to hold in-depth Chinese conversations with my forthcoming new family and friends in the near future. I don't normally do reviews but Mandarin Blueprint deserves it as the course is so good. I have just passed Level 13 of the course and I am amazed at how much I am understanding and remembering in Mandarin. I have been learning Mandarin Chinese for almost three years and even I made progress and could start basic communication in restaurants and hotels etc. I still had a hard time reading, memorising the characters and thus really getting to the level of fluency that I actually want. I used a mix of some language learning app, self made flashcards and story reading (always with additional Pinyin which made my eyes automatically jump to the "familiar" latin letters). One day I came across the Mandarin Blueprint method and in the beginning I thought this movie memorisation method is a little strange and I don't want to do it. So I forgot about it and continues brute forcing characters in my brain. But after some more frustrating months I remembered this method again and thought to myself "ok just try it". So I did and at the beginning I was really struggling with this method and using my brain like this. But with more and more progress it suddenly made sense to me. Characters I hade been struggling with for months suddenly wer now in my memory without any issue with the correct pronunciation. Thanks to the Mandarin Blueprint team. It is really worth to give it a try. If you looking for fun and efficient way to learn or improve your Chinese - just do it.

I had a hard time remembering tones. But with the movie method and stories, it helps you memorize everything a lot faster. Looking forward to continuing into phase 2 and 3!
This is my third review now! I had a little help understanding the sentences logic since I used the Hello Chinese App a year ago. But being able to read them without pinying was a amazing! Looking forward for phase 3!!!
I’m very pleased with this course. They took their time and really went in depth with how to pronounce and execute each sound. I even was able to fix some common mispronunciations I was starting to pick up on. I recommend this to anyone motivated to learn Chinese.
