Reviewers overwhelmingly had a great experience with this company. Customers deeply appreciate the exceptionally well-structured lessons and find the innovative learning methods engaging, highly intuitive, and remarkably effective for mastering vocabulary and characters quickly. People frequently mention that the extremely supportive community and practical daily tools make the entire language learning journey truly enjoyable and deeply motivating.
However, some customers also noted that imagining scenes and choosing sets for the memorization technique could initially feel challenging and required a significant amount of time at the beginning. A few learners additionally mentioned finding certain visual aspects tricky when trying to picture specific tones and distinct scenes clearly.
Honestly I was skeptical at first and just went along with it , but to my surprise this course has sped up my progress so fast that I'm completely astonished , it's a fun way to study and really effective , when I say I was shocked to realize that I could actually understand and recognize what my chinese friend had typed is an understatement.

Happy to hear you're having fun, Zarzoor! Keep up the great work!
I have studied several languages over the years and have a reasonable mastery of a few and I can definitely say that the experience of learning Chinese with Mandarin Blueprint has been the best so far. I think this is for three reasons:
1. They have thought carefully about what works for learning languages in general and Chinese specifically, designed a course that fits this and also explained their methodology so you know what you’re doing and why. Their unique system for memorising characters in particular is both fun and effective. I’m pleased to say that after just a month of study in my limited spare time I can read some simple sentences, by which I mean I not only recognise the characters and understand the meaning but also recall all the correct pronunciations.
2. They have provided extensive materials that I can use in a way and at a pace that fits my lifestyle; I can listen to dialogue and pronunciation tracks in my car or while running; do flash cards lying in bed when I wake up in the morning; I can make use of any spare 5 minutes I have in the day to learn just a bit more.
3. They give away a significant chunk of the course for free (enough to learn 250+ characters and start reading sentences as well as coaching on pronunciation and a starter course on speaking and listening) so you can have a good go to see what it’s like and whether it works for you before you commit any cash. You also join a community of fellow learners and MB staff for free, which helps provide support and advice.
If you choose to go on to pay for the full course, I feel the price is very reasonable; comparable (at least where I live) with a couple of years of evening classes but with a lot more content than you would get from that and ready for study at your own pace with lifetime access.
I thoroughly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn Chinese and would probably recommend it to anyone else too. Give it a go! What have you got to lose?

Thanks for sharing your review, Matthew! We're happy to hear you're having fun with the method and enjoying all the free resources! Keep up the great work!
I found out about MB through the YouTube videos they made. If I'd know someone else who'd love to learn mandarin, I'd definetly reccomend it to them.
The course is built up wonderfully for someone who seeks structure like me. I get overwhelmed a lot, but with the step by step videos I don't have that at all. I enjoy having short videos on every tiny thing, so I can simply click on the respective video without having to skip to a certain part in a long video.
The system makes sense to me and when it doesn't they always let you know why they teach it that way. It's really transparent.
It shows that they know what they are talking about. It's nothing like in school when they gave you dull input. They make connections to the usage of the language in everyday life which can differ a lot from the formal language one usually learns in school. Therefore it's really practical.
I love how even tiny progress is celebrated, it really motivates to continue. The level reviews are very good at visualizing this.
The community is wonderful, even if I don't share a lot, whenever I do the replies are very genuine and helpful. It also has a lot of potetial for inside jokes since we are all familiar with the HMM method! ;)
In summary: One can see the sheer love and effort you have put in this. Great job guys!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the course, Angela! We're happy to hear that the structure of the program is working for you. We're here to help you achieve your goals. Keep up the great work!
Finishing phase 2.
I'm going a bit slow, but I can safely say that all 104 characters are stored in my mind. I know how to write them, recognize them, an the pinyin.
Excellent course.

Great job, Mario! We're happy to hear you're making progress with the course. You don't need to go any faster, keep a comfortable pace for you!
Its amazing! Such big fun and easy to keep going. Their memory technique is genius - I find it a lot easier than with traditional language courses (and I did several ones in Europe and TaiwanI).
They offer free access to help build a solid foundation for learning Chinese, and the method they teach is highly effective. The only downside is that the free trial is so good, I’m seriously considering buying lifetime access, even though it’s a bit pricey by my standards. That said, you could argue that if it helps you become fluent in Mandarin Chinese, it’s definitely worth it. I strongly recommend this program to anyone learning Chinese.

We're happy to hear you're making progress, Emil! Keep up the grea work. We're sure you'll accomplish your fluency goals!
Really enjoying the Mandarin Blueprint, it can feel tedious at times creating movies, until you are doing your flashcard reviews and realize everything is just clicking and you know the character the meaning the tones etc

We're happy to hear the method is working for you, George! The more you practice, the easier it will get!
Keep up the great work!
Mandarin Blueprint is a wonderful course with an incredibly effective and innovative method for remembering Chinese Characters and words. I am beginning the intermediate course and really can't believe the progress I've made. I've been a linguist most of my adult life and have never found a better way to learn a language.
Mandarin Blueprint 回复2025-10-04
Thanks for sharing your amazing review, Andy! Congratulations on reaching the intermediate course. Keep up the great work and we're sure you'll accomplish all your learning goals!
I am from India a student of class 11 humanities.
I want to study chinese for career and to become versatile.
So I started to study 2 months ago ,at first I started with Duolingo but it wasn't effective.
So I searched in YouTube for chinese and from zeo language channel , who recommended to watch your pronunciation video , then I watched and Luke sir told about the course which was completely free ..It was a real free gift for me and I think I am very fortunate that I found such a good course where learning character is really like learning history for me ..
Best platform for chinese ...
Thanks Luke and Phil sir ....

We're happy to hear you're enjoying the course, Aaliya! Keep up the great work!
Chinese isn't "hard". It is "different". Even people highly motivated to learn can be daunted by the characters and tones. But...
I have been studying with Mandarin Blueprint since late August 2025. Five weeks later, I am reading, writing and speaking sentences in Chinese characters with the correct tones (without Pinyin). Yes, these sentences are quite basic - but wow! I have learned 124 characters which are, by and large, the most commonly used.
If you are seriously interested in learning Chinese, take a look at Mandarin Blueprint Lite. It is free. The first phase may seem tedious, slow, or "noisy", but it is all about learning how to learn. And frankly, it totally beats apps and community college (other ways I tried to learn)!
There is a great online community to encourage and help you - and to share puns, stories, and travel photos. The founders remain super-engaged, holding in-person coffee chats on a regular basis.
If you are a truly serious learner, you can upgrade to Mandarin Pro and keep moving forward. I did so quickly.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s amazing to hear how much progress you’ve made in just a few weeks ! Really impressive!
We’re glad you enjoyed the Mb lite , See you in MB pro!
MB is I think one of the best ways to learn Mandarin available, if not the best.
The method does have a slow start as you have to learn the 'movie method' for remembering characters, but like learning to drive a car, once you know what you're doing, going fast becomes easy. The course is hand-holdy for the first bit until you're comfortable enough on your own to move through learning at speed, but once the training wheels are off, I doubt there is a faster and more effective method of learning mandarin reading, writing, and speaking simultaneously, and intuitively connecting them all in your mind, the way a language should be learnt.
Mandarin Blueprint 回复2025-10-03
Thank you for you kind words and keep up th great work!
I am cautiously optimistic. I appreciate the use of science backed memory methods. I have completed Phase 1 already and am looking forward to progressing. I have studied Spanish, French, German, and Russian in an academic setting, and had private tutoring for over a year in Korean. Semi-fluency is the highest level I achieved, and just a month break would quickly leave me frustrated with the amount I would forget. This program (so far) makes it easy to stay consistent, and the Hanzi movie method and living links bypass a lot of the tedious time it takes to get vocabulary from short term to long term memory storage. Also, as an introvert, I am beyond thrilled that they give helpful options for really improving listening and speaking WITHOUT pushing awkward, stilted conversations with native speakers. In fact, they encourage a solid foundation of practice BEFORE engaging with native speakers. I don’t alway want to speak to people in my native language, why on earth would I want to speak to them in a language I am just learning? So, here’s to hopefully a successful journey of making Mandarin practice a daily part of my life, and getting to the point where talking with a stranger in Mandarin just makes me the same amount of nervous as talking to a stranger in English, ha. Cheers.
Mandarin Blueprint 回复2025-10-03
Thanks for sharing your experience. We’re thrilled Phase 1 went well and that the Hanzi Movie Method and living links are helping you stay consistent. Building a strong foundation before speaking is exactly what we aim for. Keep practicing daily and celebrating your progress—you’re doing great!
I’m an old guy who got interested in Chinese writing many decades ago. I was trying to learn Chinese but I could never learn to speak or listen. I loved writing characters so I continued but hit the brick wall at around 1500.
I started with this program and I love it!!! It’s a most amazing way to learn more characters. The focus on pronunciation is also amazing. I started the Pronunciation Master program after hearing Luke mention that focusing on producing correct pronunciation is a huge aid in correctly hearing the spoken Chinese. He’s right!
As a side note the memory palace has let me reach back into some very intense periods of my life. I’m Christian and this process of reviewing my life events has helped me come to terms with a very long journey. It’s kinda cool!
Thank you Phil and Luke!

Fantastic! They break down the pronunciation of Chinese so well. I almost gave up on learning Chinese because of the tones and pronunciation, but this made it so I want to keep going! worth every penny!

We're happy to hear you're happy with the course and the method, Jessica! Keep up the great work!
Instead of focusing on the sound or the meaning, we’re asked to think about actors or scenes, which I haven’t succeeded in doing.

Really good curriculum held back by certain business decisions
First I would like to say that the curriculum itself is extremely well done. Phil and Luke clearly know their stuff with respect to language pedagogy. I have tried a number of language learning resources and have usually had concerns that I was either being extremely inefficient with highly guided material or having to cut my own path to be efficient. It is a great relief simply to have a program to follow and not deal with the additional cognitive friction of uncertainty and curriculum building. You just press play and follow the instructions and you will be using a highly efficient and fairly enjoyable system. Learning a foreign language as an adult is difficult and no system can make that not the case, but this one takes as much friction as possible out of the process.
However, the very well-done curriculum suffers from a couple of decisions. First and most salient to my experience is the use of the Traverse application as an SRS system. It is in virtually every sense inferior to the leader in the SRS space, Anki. I have used Anki for years and the stability, ecosystem, feature set, and user experience is top-notch. Much of this derives from the fact that Anki is an open-source application and the entire community is focused on making it a good tool to support learning. Traverse seems to have been built specifically to lock materials into the application and prevent modification. Even more obnoxious is the fact that MB used to use Anki for everything and the videos mention this frequently, so I'm constantly reminded that the system used to use a richer, more stable, and more open software solution. And the founders try to sell Traverse as a solution on the basis that it is more intuitive for users and that this was a user-centric position. I find that enormously implausible. It's probably way easier to keep people from sharing MB flashcards with friends because openness is part of Anki's DNA and closedness is part of Traverse's, but it's annoying and insulting to be told multiple times that not only was the superior option standard for a while, but that switching to the worse one was a pro-user decision. In my seven years of using Anki I have not experienced the number of bugs and poor UX that I have in three months of using Traverse. I get it, guys. You got mouths to feed. But don't expect me to thank you for switching to a significantly worse system as an absolutely essential aspect of your program rather than use the rich, stable, optimized, and open alternative you used to use.
Another thing that is less of an issue but still a bit annoying: the level of self-promotion in the program is a bit excessive. Don't get me wrong: the curriculum is really very good. And maybe all the self-promotion works for them. It seems like a lot of effort and presumably they wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't working. But I was intensely skeptical before I decided to try it because my first instinct with things containing that much self-promotion is that the product can't stand on its own. It really is a good product beyond the annoyance of the Traverse decision.
To summarize: this is a very good Mandarin curriculum from two guys who work hard and know what they are doing pedagogically. It is held back by locking users into an SRS system (which is key to the curriculum) that is inferior in every way to the previous one. It also causes a few eye-rolls on the self-promotional aspect of the product. I haven't met Phil and Luke, but they seem like solid dudes. I'm sure these are very reasonable business decisions and they probably legitimately believe they are doing right by everybody on the decisions. But I would be lying if I said I didn't think they are undermining some percentage of the really fantastic work they have done with these decisions.

Hi John! Thanks for sharing your review! We changed to Traverse after experiencing many user issues with Anki. Issues that couldn't be fixed. With Traverse we have the opportunity to work on any issues that arise for our users, almost immediately. We try to promote the courses to make sure that we can reach the people who might need them to achieve their learning goals.
Thanks again for your detailed review! Keep up the great work!
The content is quite good, emails are a bit excessive
The content is quite good. The free tier gives you full access to the full first 2 phases of the program and part of phase 3, so it is a great way to find out if you like the content. It was very effective for me to learn, and I have learned the first 104 characters over the course of less than a month, putting in on average around an hour a day (or possibly less). One spot they could improve is the emails. They send a ton of emails (be it the ones through skool, traverse, or from their team directly) and it got to the point where some days I was getting 8 emails in a day. That is way too much. That's the only major frustration I've had so far.

Mandarin Blueprint is very effective and supportive
What I really appreciate is that the company has designed its course to help you get past hurdles in Chinese learning at every step, with the teachers gently guiding and supporting you through prompt replies on their community group.
The methods used here are very effective in boosting your reading, writing, pronunciation and memorization of Chinese. AND it's a lot of fun.
It takes persistance and some dedication on your part to make the best of this program. But that's true of anything in life that is worthwhile.
Thoroughly recommend this course to boost your Chinese quicky and effectively.

Thank you leaving a review ! We’re so happy to hear the course is helping you at every step and making learning Chinese fun and effective. Your dedication really shows, and we’re excited to keep supporting you along the way.
I just finished the first half of their MB lite program.
The quality of the course definitely deserves 5 stars, but I got very upset about their marketing attitude. My mailbox is spammed and unsubscribing is not respected. It almost made me quit this program, I just kept on because the course really is that good. Its a mystery to me how they dare to wrap this nugget in intrusive primitive marketing bullshit. I really hope that this is not the will of Luke and Phil.
