Most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Travelers frequently mentioned that customer service was completely non-existent, making it nearly impossible to reach anyone by phone or email to resolve urgent booking issues. Consumers also complained about poor meal choices during long flights, noting that they received very little food or options that failed to meet their specific dietary requirements.
Some reviewers were happy with the remarkably attentive staff and found the overall travel journey very comfortable and smooth. Passengers additionally appreciated seamless airport transfers, modern airplanes, and friendly crew members who provided professional care during specific trips.

It was alright. It is a budget airline so dont expect anything special regarding the food etc, but even for Budget Airlines the service was bad. Not one smile from the flight attendants and they always looked mad. Also online Check in and website were unusable.
If you got the money fly with an better airline.
China Eastern Failed to Honour my Business Class Bookings
China Eastern failed to deliver on a Business Class booking.
I booked Business Class flights with China Eastern (ticket 7815840206139) from Brisbane to Buenos Aires via Auckland nine months in advance, expecting a comparable standard of service if changes were required.
When my original Qantas connection (QF117) was cancelled, I expected a reasonable replacement.
Instead, I was offered an 8:30am departure requiring a 5:30am airport arrival (I live over an hour away and am elderly and disabled), along with a layover that more than doubled from ~3 hours to over 6 hours.
I proposed a near-identical alternative on Air New Zealand (NZ146). This was first refused, then briefly approved only in economy, and ultimately not available. The only consistent option presented was the inferior early Qantas flight.
In the end, I had no practical choice but to accept a significantly worse itinerary in the same Business Class cabin I had paid for.
This was not about preference, but about being offered a reasonable alternative after a cancellation — this did not occur.
I would welcome China Eastern revisiting this outcome given the circumstances.
Food was the worst i have ever experienced on an airline, what was described as pork with noodles was a salami looking and tasting meat served in a ketchup like tomato sauce, truly barely edible, the starter was a piece of spam served on a bed of pickled vegetables, the only alcohol offered was a cheap low quality chinese beer which was served cool as opposed to cold, and soft drinks and water, very dissapointing, the aircraft was clean and the journey comfortable, but the inflight service and food offerings was truly lacking compared with other airlines economy class.
Worst company ever. Avoid it at all costs. 4-hour delay, disgusting food, poor service on board, no apology whatsoever. The Wi-Fi wasn’t even working, yet they boast about having it…
Looking back at my experience with this company, I’d say my trip was worth $500 at most. It simply isn’t worth the price they charge. It’s the lowest of the low-cost airlines.
I would once again like to express how extremely positive my experience with this airline has been. I had previously left a review regarding the assistance I received when I experienced difficulties accessing their website and app, but this time I would like to share my overall experience.
Our journey was very pleasant from start to finish. We were travelling in Economy Class, and while, of course, the seats cannot be compared to those in Business Class, we still found them comfortable and perfectly adequate for the journey.
The in-flight entertainment is available in English and Chinese. While the selection may seem somewhat limited to some passengers, there were still several enjoyable movies to choose from, so we had no problem finding something to watch.
The food was also good. It was served hot and was quite enjoyable, which made the overall experience even more pleasant.
What really stood out to us, however, was the staff. They were extremely friendly, helpful and professional, and were always ready to assist whenever we needed anything.
The most impressive part of our experience came during our return journey. Our Osaka–Shanghai flight was delayed due to maintenance following a typhoon, which meant that we would no longer be able to catch our connecting Shanghai–Venice flight.
Because we had originally booked our trip through an external travel portal, this situation was naturally quite concerning for us. However, the airline's customer service was absolutely outstanding. They made themselves fully available to us and handled everything themselves. We simply had to explain the situation, and they took care of the necessary changes, allowing us to choose a new flight.
What impressed us even more was that they did not simply reschedule our Shanghai–Venice flight. They also arranged for our Osaka–Shanghai connection to be moved to the following day, which actually allowed us to spend an additional day in Osaka.
The customer service representative assisting us then sent us an email containing all the updated information, making the entire process very clear and straightforward. They also made sure that we were once again seated together, with two seats next to each other.
Considering the circumstances, I genuinely could not have asked for better assistance.
Overall, we were extremely satisfied with both the flights themselves and, above all, the quality of the customer service we received. In a situation that could easily have become stressful and complicated, the airline made everything surprisingly simple and handled the entire process with professionalism and care.
I genuinely believe this airline deserves much more recognition than some of the criticism and two-star reviews it has received. Of course, every passenger may have a different experience, but based on ours, we were extremely satisfied and would have no hesitation in choosing this airline again.
A truly positive experience, and exceptional customer service when it mattered most.
Denied boarding despite China Eastern's own written warning
Booking reference 7739047, flight Phuket–Casablanca via a technical stopover in France. What makes this case particularly outrageous is that China Eastern's own customer service had already flagged the exact risk in writing before we even travelled. In a prior chat, their team explicitly told us: "With no previous history in Schengen, I strongly advise for them to find an alternative routing to CMN outside of Schengen. Please advise them to change their tickets to avoid transit in Schengen."
Despite this warning being on record with China Eastern, nothing was done to correct the ticket or contact us proactively. We turned up at the airport as booked, and were denied boarding for exactly the reason their own staff had predicted weeks earlier. As Moroccan nationals not leaving the international/transit area, no Schengen visa was even required for a simple technical stop in the first place.
The financial damage has been massive: we paid 41,108 THB (around 11,000 MAD / roughly 1,100 USD) and have so far only received 3,733.70 THB back — leaving us out of pocket by over 1,000 USD for a situation China Eastern itself identified as a risk in advance and failed to act on.
If your own airline can predict a problem and still let you fly straight into it without warning or correction, something is seriously broken. Avoid booking any itinerary with a Schengen transit through China Eastern unless you want to find out the hard way.
Deeply disappointing experience. I would not fly with China Eastern again.
I travelled from London Gatwick to Tokyo and back, transiting through Shanghai in both directions, meaning four China Eastern flights in total. The experience was consistently poor from beginning to end.
On every flight, I was offered exactly the same meal, beef with noodles, with no alternative available. The beef was fatty and unpleasant, while the noodles were soggy. The meal service was also disorganised. Sometimes bread arrived approximately half an hour after the main meal, when I had already finished eating, and on other flights it was not provided at all.
China Eastern advertises a selection of drinks, including alcoholic beverages. However, on all four flights I was told there was no alcohol available other than beer. Whenever I requested a beer with my meal, the crew said they would have to “go and look for one.” It then arrived only after I had finished eating. This happened repeatedly and made the advertised onboard service feel extremely misleading. This felt very close to a dry airline.
Our experience while transiting through Shanghai was equally frustrating. We attempted to use a China Eastern lounge that is advertised online as accepting Priority Pass customers. Initially, we were told that the lounge was full. After trying other lounges, which were closing, we returned and asked whether we could join a waiting list. At that point, we were given a different explanation. We were told that only business class passengers were being admitted and Priority Pass customers would not be accepted until midnight, which staff described as standard practice.
It was approximately 10:30 pm, and our departure time meant that accessing the lounge at midnight would have been impossible. Advertising Priority Pass access while imposing restrictions at the door that are not made clear in advance is unacceptable.
The onboard experience offered little improvement. The seats were thin and uncomfortable, while the entertainment selection was extremely limited, outdated and lacking in variety. To complete the experience, checking in our luggage at Tokyo for the return journey took more than an hour.
Overall, I am incredibly dissatisfied with China Eastern. The repetitive and poor quality food, misleading information about drinks and lounge access, uncomfortable seating, inadequate entertainment and extremely slow check in created a thoroughly disappointing journey. I would never choose to fly with China Eastern again, and I could not recommend the airline to others.
I had 6h delay in Gatwick Airport and another 6h delay in Shangai Airport going to Bangkok, was in total 12h delay and the customers service is useless, I understand the flights are the cheapest ones possible but also you can't expect too much from them. Sometimes "cheap become expensive" and that's exactly what happens with EASTERN CHINA AIRLINES.
Very bad customer service, if at all, the only number in China always busy. At the airport, no one from the stuff ready to solve problems. Continously flight cancellations and changes and the food on the plane the lowest you can get. The lowest of all low-cost !
Horrible wish I could rate it even worse
Plane cancelled even though other planes took off when there was a typhoon also won’t return your money
Hainan airlines are 100% better
They have a ridiculous no full refund policy just because they couldn't add a last name to the ticket. They asked me to rebook the ticket and yet won't give me a full refund.
Flight from Shanhai to Amsterdam was terrible. To start we got different seats than the ones that we paid for so I had to sit in the middle as a 194cm man. Next, when we told the stewardesses this, they completely disregarded this and acted like they didn’t speak English and got frustrated?(maybe they actually didn’t speak English which would be insane and is another reason to not book with them if your not Chinese). No vegetarian food even though we booked this beforehand? All in all terrible experience and will fly with KLM to Asia this year. Never again with China Eastern. Be warned for terrible customer service too.
We had a typo in our flight reservation. We booked through an intermediary that was going to charge us to fix it, but after a few weeks just told us they had given up and told us to try to fix it directly at the airline. It was not easy to contact them, we finally physically went to the local ticket office and after some emails finally got it fixed. The flight was good, food was not great, but also not terrible. New airplane, personnel was all nice and helpful.
Some tips on getting things fixed:
- when all else fails, physically go to their office
- when calling their Chinese number call during Chinese office hours and use the phone number you gave during the reservation: they might not pick up any random foreign number.
Don’t choose this airline!
I only flew once with them, they lost my big XL samsonite baggage (new!) with all my clothes in and I sent them all my receipt for my things that where in my baggage and they don’t even want to pay what it’s worth, a lot of new stuff.
No movies or anything on the airplane.
Very upset. Bad customer service.
The flight was HORRIBLE. The service was not great, the flight attendants had an attitude against me, and overall i was always uncomfortable and annoyed in this flight. I would not recommended this airline.
Despite ordering a vegetarian meal in advance I was left without food for a 14 hour flight. They took no accountability and their response was to 'prove' it - despite me selecting this at checkout and confirming it on live chat.
Scummy airline.
Good on price but don't expect help if things go wrong
Ok and first choice on price but their assistance on delays and cancellations doesn't exist. My flight from Osaka via Shanghai to UK was cancelled, I did manage to get hotel but many never, lots of stress being re-routed and got back to UK 24hrs late which made all my onward travel invalid. Asked about thier compensation policies and when they'd finished laughing told me to FO.
I was unexpectedly denied boarding at the check-in counter.
Following this incident, I contacted both China Eastern Airlines repeatedly in an effort to understand the reason for the denial of boarding and to seek a fair resolution. Unfortunately, instead of receiving one clear and consistent explanation, I was provided with several different and contradictory reasons throughout my communications
It’s been almost a month without any response or refund issued
I’m not sure why I’ve read so many bad reviews. I was sceptical about flying because of the reviews but I must say they exceeded my expectations and they went above and beyond for me and my children. I flew from Melbourne to Milan. Both flights were delayed but it wasn’t by long but it worked in my favour as the end result. I ordered halal food and it was all delicious. The service was outstanding. The staff was so friendly and helpful and went above and beyond for helping me. The leg space was amazing. The plane was amazing. Everything was amazing. Entertainment could use some updating like everyone mentions but I uploaded movies on our iPad so it didn’t bother me at all. Also not to mention the price to get me my two children to Milan. Return was amazing and we didn’t have to fly through the Middle East. In fact we’re stopping at Shanghai for seven days on our way home and I’m so excited to fly with them again and I’m so excited to see China.😻❤️ Thank you so much China Eastern. We will definitely be flying with you again. 🥰
