I returned from a short vacation in Germany and was frustrated that I was unable to have a simple conversation in German, despite my using a popular app before my trip. I could use the phrases I learned on the language app but not have an actual simple conversation. I am returning for a longer vacation in 2026 and am determined I will be conversant at a basic level.
So, I bought a few books on learning German. UGH! This approach was not going to work for me either. One of the books had pages and pages of words & charts to simply memorize.
I found German with Laura online via researching various options. I went through some of her free online explanations and realized this is exactly where I needed to begin my journey.
I have finished her Foundation 1 course and am amazed at her excellent teaching method, her wonderful charts and pathways for learning the complex aspects of German grammar, and how much fun she makes this learning process.
The accompanying course material is also very good. The exercises in the workbook are well-suited to progressive learning by tying in what you have learned in prior modules. Laura has some great tutors available in a Q & A/Discussions tab so if you get stuck, you can post a question and get a clarification. These discussions are archived so you can go through prior questions/answers as well.
I plan to go back through the entire Foundation 1 course and re-do all of the workbook exercises. I will then go on to take Laura's Foundation 2 course as I can see she will build on the knowledge I have gained from Foundation 1.
The course is very much worth your time and money if you want to learn how to have a basic conversation in German by first beginning with German grammar. German grammar is complicated, but Laura makes learning it fun and approaches topics using short presentations vs long lectures. When I reached the end of Foundations 1, I was surprised how much I had learned while enjoying the lessons. I am looking forward to Foundations 2!

If you feel stuck with German grammar
Before I found Laura's resources, my German learning felt like a constant uphill battle. I was using all the typical tools—apps, various online resources—but was left feeling like I was just memorizing endless lists of rules without ever truly understanding the language. Life-changing. Mind-blowing. Beyond expectations. As a 25-year career educator, I know what goes into curriculum and course development. Laura's courses are the best bar none and worth every penny. I have bought so many German books and tried different websites, programs, CDs, etc. None of them is as good as Laura's. The amount of work, studying, planning, color-coding, and charting is unfathomable. I have loved the German language since 7th grade (late 1980s pre-Berlin Wall Fall). I studied German in junior high, high school, college, and independently as an adult. Not until this course did it all begin to click. Laura is about internalizing and learning, not rote memorizing. As a teacher, I know that is the best path. Sure, you have to memorize some things, but it doesn't feel like work. This course has given me incredible solace over the last 17 months since my father was called Home too soon. I loved GF1. I will be starting GF2. I cannot wait. I feel like Laura is a friend! "Hallo Studenten!" :-) I cannot say enough good things about this course. I got all her textbooks first and tried to go it alone with the answer key. Helpful--but exponentially more helpful is her actual course, where she explains every color-code and pattern. Even though I did all the exercises before I took her course, I did them all again within the course. I learned more that way. Buy GF1 and go through it twice. Also, she has A LOT of free YouTube videos and blogs. Again, not as clarifying as her teaching--how could they be? At the end of GF1, she talks about either taking GF2 or studying on your own. She gives you so many resources. I literally cannot express my gratitude and excitement! You are risking nothing! WORTH IT! I have many full notebooks from various sources, but GF1 and GF2 are the epitome of a language class. No AI--just good old-fashioned passionate teaching and dedication. She covers everything! Also, the customer service and her team are stellar.

Learning German with Laura has been so good and easy due to her approach of the topic is so simple, the methods and selection of the topics is logical which makes learning German very easy.

Success in learning German!
I struggled with learning German for years. I studied German in high school in the US and when I moved to Austria, I had to take a German language exam for my residency. I took a few in person classes but they were difficult and the instructors never took the time to explain the reasons for the German grammar.
German Foundations 1 & 2 with Laura has been truly easy to understand. The lessons are done in small chunks then you have a chance to do the practice drills to make sense and apply the new skills. The style of the information that is presented is engaging and not learning by rote but learning by usage.
I don’t think I could’ve passed my B2 exam without Laura providing the fundamental lessons in German grammar. Laura also helped to reduce any fears I had in learning new languages. I would highly recommend this course if you wish to learn to understand and apply your German skills into everyday and professional life.

I finally understand that Grammar, now I just have to internalise it.
I moved to Germany 4 years ago (2021) I've been learning German since. I have completed a B1 level course and examination and even though I passed, I still felt that I didn't understand most of the grammar and blunder my way through it.
I found Laura's articles useful, and I tried to understand the all-in-one declension chart while taking the B1 course. Now that I have finished the Foundation 1 course, I wish I had done so while taking the B1 course. I had no clue what they were trying to teach me, I still don't know how I am supposed to understand complicated Grammar when the teacher only speaks in German. How can I understand it when the teacher throws another chart on my desk and points at things, I didn't understand the last chart you threw at me and we're already moving on.
People say this is the only way to learn, well maybe to just practice talking over and over again, but to understand the complexities of Grammar, I felt that I needed someone talking to me in English.

I highly recommend German with Laura
I highly recommend German with Laura. Laura provides a solid framework to learn and understand German's complex grammar. I especially appreciated her teaching of declensions which was very clear. Plenty of practice is provided to solidify understanding. I've learned much much more in this course than with Duolingo.

Great course for German Grammar
This is a great course that I'd recommend for anyone who has been lost on German grammar. I've done Babbel, Chatterbug and Duolingo and have liked all of them but while they were great for vocabulary, I wasn't getting what I needed on grammar. This course filled that empty spot. I especially appreciated the way the material was organized, and I loved the presentation style. It just flowed the way my brain works. I am planning on continuing on with the second Foundations class.

I spoke German as a child and have returned as an adult to reacquaint myself with my first language. I looked at many different courses and chose German Foundations to supplement Duolingo, and I’m very glad I did. Duolingo is fun (I’m looking at you, Falstaff), and does a good job with the basics and vocabulary. However, unless you upgrade to Max from Premium, there is very little explanation of why sentences are constructed a certain way. I obtained many of the “whys” from Laura’s course. She is a fabulous teacher, and I highly recommend German Foundations One to anyone seeking a better understanding of this fascinating but complex language. When I can afford to do so, I will be registering for German Foundations Two.

An excellent introduction to German grammer
I have been very imoressed with Laura's learning programme. She has made the understanding of German grammer so much clearer!. I've been following Duolingo for a couple of years and was stuck! I just didn't understand the grammer and the big differences with english grammer, The foundation course really makes this clear. Her aide memoirs are very useful and easy to follow. I have to put the work in now to consolidate the information she has given me and then I shall definitely follow her nexr course. I think it has been worth every penny. I'd advise you to follow her free introductory course to see how her step by step approach is easy to follow and really works. You can revisit modules as often as you like if you have not fully grasped the concepts at first.
