Splice Is Fine, But That's Not Good Enough

Splice feels like a classic private-equity overtuning of an already working product and system.

Quality Samples and Experience!

The site was super easy to use. The quality of the samples is fantastic. I also appreciate the option to download a Certification of Licensure document for each sample.

Unfair treatment of loyal customers

I had a subscription FOR YEARS, paid a lot of money. I had to cancel it due to financial difficulties, and when I finally got in a better place to get back to music producing and resubscribed. I lost over 8k credits that I have been saving for years. Ridiculous, would not recommend this service to anyone because of this.

Pricing is way to high

Pricing is way to high, an Abonnement with fewer credits per month is necessary for small producers like me, otherwise they just can’t afford it.

Misinformed, overpriced, low-quality sound

I rated this a tool solely based on the content and Pro Tools integration. I have had a Pro Tools Artist subscription for the past year and went from a Splice Creator monthly subscription for 2 months, to a Splice INSTRUMENT monthly subscription for 5 months, to upgrading to a Sounds+ monthly, and now a Creator monthly subscription again. I'm going to go fully in detail on how this is such a waste of money, and I'm now switching to LANDR. 1. CREDITS: For Splice being $20 monthly now you'd think you would be able to have unlimited monthly credits, that is not the case. It's also 200 credits not 300 which I feel like changed but I'm not 100% on that. What is even more wicked is that when you cancel your subscription your suspending your license to use those credits. 2. PRO TOOLS INTEGRATION: When I first got Pro Tools a year ago I actually already had a splice subscription which I used with GarageBand. I was instantly aware of the integration which I was really impressed, however I didn't realize you had to have a subscription. I looked up Google it said Splice is "essentially free with 12 million sounds" and I took the liberty in canceling my subscription. It then said I needed a subscription to use this so I was like alright, I'll sign up for the cheapest one, INSTRUMENTS. I didn't realize splice wasn't free a month later when I tried to drag and drop a clip into the timeline and nothing happened... Turns out it was blazing through my credits and without any indication I had zero credits. I looked this up on the Splice forum and it said "OH all you need is a Pro Tools x Splice subscription for $12.99 a month for 100 daily credits". I try looking for this, there is NOTHING. Splice must've removed it. My next play is my fault most likely, but seeing the $12.99 I instantly tried to match up the subscription and saw the INSTRUMENT subscription for the same price and was like "well this one didn't work" so I thought maybe the Sounds+ would do it... 100 monthly credits, $12.99 a month also. -[in the forum it also said that the Pro Tools x Splice subscription is 100 monthly credits but it's upgraded to daily in Pro Tools strictly]-. But NOPE I wasted $13 again. Unlike some slightly more forgiving softwares, there is no discount for upgrading your subscription on Splice. So even with the $13 purchase, you have to spend another $20 to start the next one. And make sure to cancel one of the subscriptions or it will automatically charge you for both somehow. 3. QUALITY: The sounds you get with the software aren't that bad, you'll get some that are raw and others that have 10 pounds of reverb already. But what seems like 12 million sounds somehow ends up feeling like 10,000. Splice organizes their sounds into packs. Some of these packs end up having 100+ sounds. Unfortunately, when trying to sort out a genre you'll likely end up with 80 results with 2 separate packs needing to be filed through. And if you don't like 1 sound from a pack, the others will probably carry the same weight. Additionally, this could be a Pro Tools problem, but when importing certain tracks into the timeline from Splice there is a noticeable quality dip. This is likely a sampling error, I cannot find a fix. The UI is fine for the software, it's not as unique compared to Epidemic Sound but it's boring enough to work. 4. SPLICE INSTRUMENTS: If I could give one positive to this software. It would definitely go to their instrument plug-in. There is higher quality in this beta program than their multi-year clips software. The sounds are the closest thing you're going to get to live recordings without spending a crap ton on Native Instruments. The file size is really large but worth it for what seems like almost lossless sound. The UI is "interesting" but a little to geometric and repetitive especially cause there's some beautiful orchestral sounds there. For people that specialize in digital instruments (which I am not) I could see this being really cool to use. But you still need a subscription to run it, so I'm gonna stick to Analog Pro and my other permanent instruments. Overpriced, underpowered, and boring. Loopcloud is $8 cheaper and LANDR is $7 which brings even more versatility.

Billing issues

I give the service one start since the billing policy is outdated. If the card does not charge the first time, try again instead requiring a new credit card to be used. Absolute scam to me. Update: Splice has reached out to rectify the situation to my satisfactory.

Cohesiveness in my workflow

I wish I had not waited so long when it came to subscribing. The website interface is flexible. The options for the vsts are good. I appreciate the option of being able to get just a particular sound out of the kit instead of having to purchase a whole kit and the producers of the kit get paid. I use it for little accents on my production. Every download is used right away because it allows me to be picky with my selection of sounds without any filler. It almost feels like digital crate digging with stems and involved.

Good selection of samples, bad plugin/integration

Good selection of samples, but your plugin is webapp slop and crashes my DAW on load. I also don't like how the app downloads samples to a set file structure, very fiddly.

Great subscription but some minor issues

Great subscription with some fantastic sounds. Only issue I’ve faced it it takes me 4/5 times to log access the downloaded sounds as it keeps telling me I need to subscribe to access them when I have a subscription already
