We stopped here after passing several times on a Sunday and seeing it packed so thought a Saturday lunch would be as good. The staff are good and the setting nice but the food we had wasn't great. Burger was very plain and dripped grease when I picked it up to eat it and the chips weren't great . My partners meal was also not great but maybe the main focus is on their Sunday custom and unfortunately on this trip the food wouldn't make me go there unless it was a Sunday as the reviews for their Sunday lunch seem good

Evening meal reunion

A group of us went for an evening meal . The ambiance was lovely, and I had high hopes. The serving staff were friendly and obliging. For both of those, I would give 4 stars. I ordered a brisket cottage pie. Although presented beautifully, it was incredibly salty, to the point where I had to drink water in between mouthfuls. The gravy was overly thick, and tasted and looked like it had been made using gravy granules. Considering the meal was highly priced, I would have expected a home made, flavoursome gravy. Overall, the prices seemed high for the main meal portion sizes. However, the deserts were lovely, and good sized portions. I had a crumble, which was very tasty. The manager was overly familiar, and joined us at our table twice, chatting to us. We were having a reunion, so did not appreciate the interruption. I can only guess he was trying to move us on, as we were the only ones left in the restaurant.

Disappointed

Catch up lunch with another couple and the Gull was convieniently 1/2 way between us and the website looked good menu and appeared to be a very busy place so food must be good - yes ?. Inside was very well laid out and not what I expected from the roadside. Welcoming friendly staff. Starters good But my and my wife's mains were not so good. She had the gourmet fish basket but without the gourmet. The smoked haddock bon bons had a hint of chlorine smell so past its best. Not a disaster as the whitebait and prawns were ok but still not gourmet quality. Mine however was a disaster. I had the pigs plate and the pork belly and ham hock risoles were probably a bit too dried out before being deep fried and they were inedible. The pan fried pork fillet was dry and tough and even difficult to cut. The BBQ sauce meant for the pork belly was with a strong vinegar and made the risoles 10 times worse in flavour. Minor points were no apple sauce as per menu and cajun chips were just ordinary chips without any seasoning. My plate obviously had very little eaten from it and I told our server that it was very poor quality. She very kindly gave us a 10% discount on our two dishes so £1.80 off each of the two dishes. That still ended up being a £98 bill. Normally I would have demanded the full cost of my dish but I know how difficult it is for the trade during these times. I just accepted it and will not revisit. If this is the normal pigs plate then I am sure many more will not revisit. Difficult times is no excuse for poor quality. Update : looks like management blocked me from their FB pages because I gave a negative review. I guess the manager knew they gave a terrible dish and had no defence. Dropped my 2 * rating to 1 because of that.

Apologies for the delay.

Enjoyed a lovely meal here a few weeks back, staff friendly and very approachable but not in your face, which I like. The restaurant has character and charm and has quite a unique appearance inside and out. The food was spot on and all cooked well. Would and have recommended this restaurant to others, may possibly return for my sons 21st in a few weeks with the family.

Lovely Visit

I visited the Gull on 9/2/19 with my Mum and her two friends for a birthday. I had booked this visit via telephone and spoke to a lovely gentleman called Tom. Our Reservation was booked for 7pm however we decided to arrive earlier for some drinks at the bar. After being within the establishment for a short while The Gull experienced a power cut. This however wasn't an issue for our group, we understand in life that things like this happen. I have noticed a few comments from other diners that evening whom have used this as an opportunity to moan, however haven't commented on cleanliness, staff, food, drinks, toilets etc. I feel these reviews shouldn't be used as a representation on the Gull. Having dined here on various occasions I can honestly say that this one off situation was resolved quickly and without fault. Now onto a review of the establishment and not the unexpected situation that occurred. Upon arrival we were greeted by staff not only at the bar but also waitresses. All of which were friendly and well dressed. We were seated by Rachel whom let us know our table was ready early. We were seated in the old area at table 9. This area is one of my favourite parts of the building, full of character and charm. Our drinks order was taken and brought to us very quickly, presented in beautiful glasses with garnishes and ice. ( All of the glassware had clearly been polished and added to the service ) Our party had ordered a selection from the menu and specials board ( we read about the chefs Saturday board online and thought we would try this ). Due to the power cut we had to wait a little longer for food, however the manager Tom ( who I previously booked with ) kept our drinks flowing and ensured we were comfortable and happy (despite the circumstances). Once the food arrived we were greeted with our food plated in a lovely way. I had the Polenta Terrine priced at £10.95 with a side of Chunky Chips. This dish was full of flavour, an item that was exceptionally delicious was the Crispy Kale. This could be served on its own in a bowl as it was extremely moorish. The others in my party could not stop talking about how good their food was and were swapping mouthfuls for each other to try. Having seen someone else have a desert delivered we couldn't pass up on this opportunity to try them for ourselves. These came out to us quickly and again presented in an exceptional way. They are not to be passed up on, you can tell that they are handmade in house. Its these touches that make it a little more enjoyable. Overall the food was delightful, I can't wait to return again to try other mains and desserts. One person in our party booked a table before we left for a future visit. STAFF: Smartly dressed, clean in presentation and polite. Its rare that you visit an establishment with enthusiastic staff whom are well dressed and are quick at problem solving. DECOR: The Gull's renovations are delightful, quirky and full of hidden gems. The Well in the floor, the old window, Old Church pews and many fires. TOILETS: The ladies toilets were amazing, clean with a beautiful aesthetic to them. CLEANLINESS: The Gull is extremely clean with no area missed, our glasses and napkins were cleared quickly with the touch of using a tray every time.

Worst experience ever

Turned up, suddenly all the electrics go out... weren’t approached once to say we are ever so sorry can we get you some drinks on the house or anything, so we sat in the dark for 5 mins. Then our food came out (despite not having electricity?!) and it was half cooked. We were then moved to part of the restaurant that had some lighting while the staff ran around like headless chickens with lights going on and off but mostly off?! It’s was ridiculous. Not once did someone come over and just put us at ease. These people have no idea on customer service. Once we finished the main, we were then told that they can’t do desserts because the power was down?! I said to be honest you shouldn’t have gave us our food half cooked and that the experience we had is disgusting. They offered a £10 gift voucher and a free drink. Shove it! I’d rather leave my review thanks. The best bit is my son who was with me is a Health and Safety Executive and he noticed the emergency exit lights didn’t illuminate when the power went off. I think he’ll be reporting it. I often eat out in the city, Beccles, Gorleston... and this is truly the worst experience I have ever had. Will never go back and will be telling all my work colleagues and friends to avoid. I hope the offer of a £10 gift voucher was worth it. Don’t even get me started on the food.
