Beware of import duty buying from abroad
I bought a reel to hold a swimming pool cover. The item is manufactured in Canada and not available in the UK; its good because you can fix it to the pool. I ordered it together with a tune up kit for a pool cleaner. I expected the three items (tune up kit, reel supports and reel pole) to be delivered together. Only one came and it took many emails and transatlantic calls before the other items came. On an order of £1000, there was £200 import duty which had not been advertised on the web page. Because it was sent in three shipments with the same £1000 invoice, I have been asked for a further £400 of payment from DHL. I have spent hours on the phone to DHL, but when they sent in the debt collectors, I decided to pay. So items priced at £1000 have cost me £1600 and hours of misery on the phone. Both DHL and wild west pools have been very unhelpful and incompetent.
