OSMO Action leak misery - avoid DJI
I bought an osmo action a couple of years ago and have used it periodically. It was a good upgrade from my older GoPro, at the time and has worked well on dry land (although the FoV is pretty poor). I also have a Mavic Pro and Osmo Gimbal. Last week I took the Osmo Action to Madeira and made the mistake of using it in the water. It leaked and died. The battery compartment looked shut but clearly hadn't sealed at both ends. There are two catches on the battery compartment and, whilst the battery looks flush, the clips don't always close (apparently). From looking online this appears to have been a recognised problem. The camera is now dead. It appears that DJI have just launched a new version (Osmo action 3) which has a completely different design. Annoyingly I had also bought a load of extra batteries and ancilliaries to fit the now dead camera. These will not fit a replacement as the new version has been improved to correct the problem leakage problem. I spoke with DJI customer support about my lack of confidence in buying an Action 3 as replacement, since I cannot be confident that the camera will not have its own issues. The customer support were quite clear that the original problems had now been fixed. The point is that the original camera should not have had such a flaky design regarding the battery closure. I am now left having to replace the camera at the full price of a new one. Also, the spare batteries I invested in are useless. My options are paying DJI more money to replace something that failed or going back to GoPro, In reality I'm not confident about buying another OSMO and see no incentive from DJI to reward loyal customers. I'm also in the market for a new drone. I think the gopro hero 11 has a better image quality and the new sensor size seems very practical. It looks like I'll be swapping brands in the next couple of weeks (or even on Black Friday?)
