DJI

Beware you don't control your drone!

In DJI terms, I had a flyaway incident, and this was completely outside of my control. DJI just offered 20% discount off a new drone. Two weeks before the incident, I flew the drone. Charged the batteries and stored them fully charged. DJI selects to discharge batteries to about 3/4. I decided I wanted to fly the drone and put the battery in straight from the bag. The drone did its preflight checks and was happy. The flight lasted just 67 seconds. At 29 seconds before, it was over water, the drone spotted it was "Battery power restricted. Return to home". I am not sure if it flashed this message during the flight but it was on the flight log. According to the log and software manual, it should have returned to home. It didn't. It carried on for some reason and at 40 seconds it decided the battery was "Critical Low Power. Aircraft in Auto Power Off Protection. Forced landing in progress" and it forced a landing into the water where it drowned as the drones aren't designed to float. Why would software think it is wise to force a landing into the sea where it will drown? That is stupid. It still carried on out to sea until 57 seconds. Then for some reason it turned. The flight log doesn't show altitude. But it seems to me the drone had plenty of time to get back to land. Although it shouldn't have left the land anyway. It should have returned to home at the point it detected low battery. I wanted to fly the drone over a small stretch of sea but in my opinion all of this was determined by DJI software which was up to date. DJI controls the battery discharge. DJI controls how it reads battery power. DJI controlled how it handled the first battery message and DJI forced the drone to land in an inappropriate place. I did take out 2 extended warranties but these had expired. DJI initially offer a 15% discount which meant paying GBP 459.43 for a Mavic Air 2 aircraft body (with imbal&propellers)*1, Battery*1. They then went to 20%. My Stepson bought a Mavic Air 2 with fly more kit on Ebay for £170. I feel DJI should care for their customers a lot better. This was originally a £900 piece of kit. DJI likened the incident to software on other electronic devices. It is not the same thing at all. A mobile phone out of warranty does not deliberately choose to drown itself in the sea despite all its users attempts to get it to do otherwise. This is a very poor experience and I am concerned that there is no consumer protection for drone fliers then a company is providing poor/faulty software updates. This incident was totally avoidable and DJI should do better and take responsibility for it. UPDATE: Following my comments here DJI have offered me a drone for £299. I still feel my comment above apply and this is a dreadful lack of customer care and people need to be aware of the extra risks they have when paying out a lot of money for a product like a drone.
