ONYX BOOX

Interesting Devices - Poor Quality Control, even worse customer service.

I purchased an Onyx Boox Tab Mini C on 29/01/2024 and was happily using it for 5 months. I really liked the colour screen as well as the freedom of using the Google Play Store to add more features to the device. It allowed me to use my existing Kindle library via the Android app, and get eBooks from other stores as well. I always read in bed, and use a protective case with my device so I was shocked that after 5 months, the screen cracked while sitting on my bedside table. Boox Support are adament that their screens never break and it must have been through misuse. The device wasn't even in use when it broke! They claim their warranty doesn't cover screen breakages. At the time of writing this review, their warranty however does state: "If within one year from the date of purchase, any faults caused by quality problem of the product itself under normal operation and without overhaul, you can enjoy maintenance services for free." see, shop dot boox dot com /pages/warranty for warranty Which is broad enough to suggest that if you use your device normally and it still breaks you are covered. However if you cite this to Boox Support, you will be told, cracked screens are only caused by 'external forces' and therefore, not covered by warranty They quoted a fee of $245 for screen repair, plus $40 for return shipping which would not cover any customs fees applied from sending the device from the UK to Poland. I am not the only Boox customer to have this problem, and they always respond with the "external forces" excuse. All devices have a failure rate, and Boox is simply in denial about theirs. 5 months is not an acceptable life span for a device. I purchased via Amazon and contacted them, who agreed that the device is faulty and accepted a return for a full Refund, despite being past their usual return window. It really is a shame as the device is a great ereader but I cannot recommend them as you may get a faulty device and be offered no support, just a huge bill to repair it.
