DJI

Live Streaming baseball with the Action 5 Pro…..not as described.

I purchased a DJI Action 5 pro camera for the sole purpose of live streaming youth baseball. All their marketing claimed an easy and seamless process to do so. The reality was that it couldn’t have been more complicated and useless. First the camera doesn’t have native support for the most used third party baseball streaming apps (sideline, game changer, etc). We set up a YouTube account that seemed like it would work but here is where the camera screwed me, in order to take the chain link fence out of the video you need to zoom in just a bit (1.0 to 1.4) the problem was that the digital zoom causes you to cross the threshold from native optical to digital cropping. Because the camera has to crop and compress the video and apply an image stabilizer it creates a heavy spike in the processor….long story a bit shorter it glitches and buffers. They kinda leave that out when describing how easy and seamless their camera livestreams. There are ways around this issue but they are complicated and require additional equipment like computers. I don’t really have a field side office to set this up in. You might want to stay with GoPro. * I checked the firmware and I have the most recent edition. I live-streamed another game in “Standard” with no zoom and the glitching and buffering went away. The problem with that is, the field is slightly larger than it needs to be so seeing action in the field is difficult as is identifying players. The fence is also visible in the video and cannot be completely removed unless I stick the lens of the camera through the fence and into dangerous territory. I’m afraid I have to stick with my initial assessment that the action 5 pro is not a good camera for little league game live streaming and you should stop suggesting that it is.
