IQ Institute

Beware! They automatically enroll you into an expensive subscription!

I remember OK-ing a transaction of $1.95 for an IQ test, not an auto-enrollment into a monthly subscription of $29.95. WHY do so many businesses do this kind of shady practice lately? Don't they know it delegitimizes their businesses and makes them look like scams? Why would any customer trust a business that operates that way? I just came from having to leave a review for ANOTHER business that did the same thing (Court Records US, if anyone's curious). IQ Institute charges you $1.95 for their services and then quietly enrolls you into an automatic $29.95 monthly subscription...which is technically legal because I'm sure they tell you in some small print somewhere that this is all going to happen. (FYI, claiming that you've told customers about the 7-day free trial isn't enough information to do much besides cover yourselves legally). I'm sure, like myself, most customers assumed that whatever services come with that 7-day free trial would just end after the trial period, not that they'd be enrolled into an expensive monthly subscription after the fact. (Why would ANYONE pay $300+ a year for that kind of service, anyway? My most expensive subscriptions - ones that I absolutely need daily - go for about $250 a year. Just more proof that the whole business is shady and gross: They rely on charging unaware customers until they find out, so they need to milk them for all they're worth.) It's obvious they're being deceptive about it all because they don't tell you up front and more clearly when you first pay that $1.95 that you're automatically enrolled into their membership after a few days. They never even send monthly reminders about payments. I ended up paying for about half a year before I realized. I called Chase and had them dispute it all and refund me. I also just reported this business to the BBB and the FTC so that hopefully, in the future, IQ Institute can be more transparent about their subscription services. I gave them two stars instead of one because I actually quite liked the service until all this. Instead of charging a deceptive subscription, why don't they just charge more for the IQ tests? People would be happy to pay more for a good IQ test and profile. Their subscription model is just driving business away.
