We understand how frustrating it can be to see files that seem to be available but won’t open. To answer your question, “X days of retention” is how long articles are retained on our servers. However, the nature of Usenet is such that it is a decentralized network, and the availability of files is dependent on the completeness of the original posts and whether all parts of a file are still present. Sometimes, this means that files may show up in search results but not be complete or have missing parts, which will cause them not to open properly. This can happen for a variety of reasons that are outside of our control, such as how the files were originally posted to the network. We completely understand your concern, especially if you’ve noticed that this has been a problem that’s been increasing lately.
