Not happy.

For some reason, my account value is approximately $6,000 less than what it is supposed to be and I am extremely upset about this. I called and inquired with Ira about this discrepancy and he promised to look into it and call me back. He didn't. I called him again and he said he was out for a week and promised to call me on the following Tuesday. He did not call me. I am furious.

Reply from Lear Capital2026-06-19

Hi Rebecca, we’re sorry that getting follow up has been frustrating! We will check in with Ira and have our customer service team follow up with you as soon as we can. Apologies for the delay!

Terrible customer service. Cheated out of $4,600 in gold coins!

A lot went wrong with two different customer service reps. The first sent a package introducing me to Lear. It also included an envelope. In a text he told me to mail in the $15,000 and an account would be created. I telephoned back. In my experience, at Lear no one answers the phone (1 exception), it always goes to message that states the rep will respond within 24 hours. No one ever phones back. I telephoned that rep and stated in a message that I hadn't filled out any kind of paperwork demonstrating my $15,000 would go into an account in my name. I wasn't just going to send money without any kind of documentation that it was for the purchase of gold coins in an account in my name. The response via text was I will telephone you on Monday (This was Thursday) and we'll correct this. I never received a phone call on Monday. I phoned back on Tues. and the person did answer (I don't recall his name) apologized for not phoning and scheduled a 10:00 a.m. appointment the next day (Weds.) to straighten things out. He never phoned at the 10:00 a.m. appointment on Wednesday. I phoned Lear and stated I wanted a different rep. I was immediately transferred to I Michael Madden who was courteous and made sure I had am offical account. He connected me to Ira Silver his "assistant." Ira sent forms online which I filled out and the forms officially created an account with Lear. He then mailed me an envelope with the Lear address label on it in which I was to place the $15,000 cashier's check for gold coins. Lear fully insured the money. I mailed it in. Several days later I received a phone call that I would receive the $15,000 in gold coins via Fed Ex or UPS. I was given a date and time frame when 2 different packages would arrive. Upon arrival, I was to sign for it. The first Fed Ex package arrived within the time frame given. I was told there would be a second package that was to arrive within the same time frame. It did not. It arrived 1 1/2 days later via UPS. The amount of gold I should have received less the 2% commission ($300.) should have been $14,700. I received a phone call on the day of the second arrival of the gold from a person who had weeks earlier solicited me to purchase Gold from Park Ave. Numismatics. I told him of my purchase with Lear and asked how do I make sure I have $15,000 worth of gold. Is there some place near where I live that I could have it assayed? He told me to take a picture of the front and back of the gold coins (there were only 12 of them) I did. He named the coin and stated (this is paraphrasing from a discrepant memory). He stated the coins sold at Park Ave for $860 each. The 12 coins would be worth $10,600 (approximately). I was being cheated out of almost $4,400 in gold. I immediately decided to cancel my order with Lear. I phone Lear. Once you have an account your phone call always goes to the person you were assigned. It went to Ira Silver with his recorded message he would get back to you within 24 hours. If it was urgent, press 0 and you will be transferred to an operator. I pressed 0 and noting happened. I was not transferred. I called back a few times, each time pressing 0 and I was not transferred anywhere. I used someone else's phone so my call wouldn't go directly to Ira Silver. A recorded message came on that a representative would soon phone me back. I told that rep I wanted to cancel my order and why. After the call I received an email from a woman who stated after the weekend and Memorial Day Holiday a Manager would telephone me. I stated I was going to ship the gold back on Tuesday and obtain insurance. She emailed back with instructions not to ship the gold until I had arranged to do so with the person who would telephone me. I was telephoned on the Tues. after Memorial Day by the head manager. He was courteous and wanted to send me more gold. I told him about all the problems I had with the two representatives and the phone never transferring to an operator. I wasn't about to trust Lear to be honest in any future dealings so, "No." I did not want to receive an additional $4,600 in gold coins. I was entirely cancelling. The manager sent a Lear Capital label online to use for the return shipment. It had very specific instructions on how the gold was to be packed. The label meant the gold was insured and I was not to tell Fed Ex anything about the contents of the package. At this stage, I shipped the gold back yesterday and I have yet to see a return check for $15,000. I would say buyer beware. Buy from Lear at your own risk of being cheated and do not expect good customer service. Cordially, Camille Chapline

Don't trust Lear Capital

Disclaimer: I am not without blame in the transaction with Lear that resulted in an estimated $350,000 loss to my metal account. Lear did not do anything “illegal” but they certainly behaved in an unethical manner. Shame on me for not performing proper due diligence and of being too trusting. I needed to obtain a new broker for my metal account as the entity that I had used to purchase metal went out of business. The metal account is held with Equity Trust and they informed me that if I wanted to sell metals in the account in the future, I would need a new broker. I was considering a selling off some of the coins to meet my 2026 Required Minimum Distribution. The Equity Trust website listed a number of brokers they worked with and I started calling around. None of the listed brokers that I called (except for Lear) were interested in taking on an account that they had not been involved with initially. Lear Capital did agree to serve as the broker for my account and we entered into an agreement in early November 2025. One of my metal accounts at the time of the agreement consisted of a number of 2 oz. silver coins and the spot metal price at this time was a value close to $1.2 million. The Lear Sr. Acct. Mgr. suggested that I would be better off with a mix of gold and silver bars. I did not disagree. They purchased my silver coins at wholesale market price and, in my head, I incorrectly assumed that the bars they would then purchase on my behalf would also be at market price or something close to it. The price they charged me for the bars included an exorbitant markup which resulted in me losing about $350,000 in the process. During the recorded conversation of the above transaction, the cost of the bars was stated but it wasn’t until close to the end of the discussion that a spread of about 33% had been applied was mentioned. When asked if I understood, I said “yes” but I clearly did not understand. If they had asked if I agreed to a price that was about 50% over market value, I would have said no. The recorded script pretty much lulled me as all the questions as asked, required only a “yes” or “no” answer. I just followed the script. Contractually, Lear could charge this high spread but the contact also allowed for a 2% spread which they conveniently ignored. After the transaction was completed, the broker indicated he would call after a few weeks. When that didn’t happen, I reached out to him via email in early December to get an update. He forwarded my email to another broker who then contacted me. He indicated that the value of my account was $1.4 million which seemed great and was in line with what I expected given the market growth at that time. I asked him for a statement and he indicated he would get something to me as of a later date. Never got one. It was not until sometime in January 2026 when the bars that were acquired were entered into my account at Equity Trust that I realized I had been taken. I called Lear Capital to get an updated value and was told the account was now worth $1.7 million even though at that point I knew the actual value was significantly much less. Lear continued the scam by inflating the value! I then asked the account to be liquidated at Lear’s valuation. I do not recall the rest of the conversation of that day because I was livid. Lear did not act on my request to cash in at $1.7 million. Neither this phone call or the earlier one in December were recorded. I made several subsequent requests for information and or statements by email and phone messages to both brokers but they were ignored. It was not until I filed a complaint with the BBB that someone finally responded to me and tried to smooth things over. The individual from Lear came across to me as being sympathetic and we had several conversations. He was willing to pay something to settle the complaint I filed. The offer, in addition to some metal, included a personal promise that Lear would not charge brokerage fees on future sales of my metal. I asked if he was willing to put this “guarantee” in writing on Lear letterhead but was told he could not do that. Hmm. Worthless. Subsequently, when I asked him to put in writing exactly what kind of metal he was proposing to settle this dispute, he said he would have to go back and try to reconstruct the details of the latest of several offers. Even though the value provided was down to the dollar, he could not provided the details. Hmm. After a couple of weeks went by, it was clear I would never be provided the information which should have been easy to provide. This is further indication this company is not one with which to do business. At this point, I determined that it was better to proceed with posting reviews rather than taking blood money. It is clear I made mistakes by not digging into the details.

Reply from Lear Capital2026-06-01

Dave, we're sorry to see your ongoing disappointment with your account. This clearly wasn't the experience you hoped for, and we don't take that lightly — especially on a decision this size, where trust matters as much as the outcome. The metals market made these past months genuinely hard: a strong run-up followed by a sharp pullback in early 2026 that caught a lot of investors off guard and was outside anyone's control. We understand how much that weighs on you when it's an account you've worked to build. Your account first came to us after other firms had passed on it, and our team spent many conversations working through it with you — handling the sale of your coins, which carried no commission, and repositioning you across both gold and silver at your request. Since then we've offered to go further to try to restore your confidence in us. We'll also own that our follow-up didn't always come as quickly as it should have. We've been working through an unprecedented volume of requests during this stretch, and we're sorry if that has added to your frustration. We know none of this changes how you feel about where things landed. We've reached out, and the door is still open. Please reach out to Jeremy and we'd be happy to pick it back up.
