Military Family, 20+ Moves — This Was the Worst One

We paid 2–4x more than competitors because Safebound promised no subcontractors, professional crews, and white-glove service. None of that was true. What actually happened: The crew showed up two hours late. The team lead was so rude that one of his own workers quit mid-job. He argued with both me and my wife. They sent additional subcontractors we didn't approve — no uniforms, street clothes, some smelling like marijuana. Furniture was reassembled with stripped and missing screws. I had to go buy hardware myself so our kids' beds were safe to sleep in. They charged more than quoted and refused to move items we'd agreed on. The biggest red flag: they only accept Zelle or cash. No credit cards, no debit cards. When a $4K Zelle payment failed due to platform limits, they pressured us aggressively until I went to an ATM after 10 PM to withdraw cash. Untraceable payment methods only, for thousands of dollars. They didn't finish the job, wanted us to pay for their hotel to come back the next day, and no one from the company has followed up despite multiple complaints. There is damage to our home and furniture. I've moved 15–20 times in my life as a military member and military kid. This was the worst by far. Do not use this company.

I was initially impressed with the great price and service promised. Once they got my deposit, that's where the nightmare began. When movers arrived on moving day only 2 men showed up when I had been promised 3. Would take 3 hours and it took 7. Items that should have been on the list weren't. I was charged an additional $2000. The worst part were the delivery delays. My house closed April 30th. Movers didnt arrive until 14 days later. I was in an empty house with an air mattress, a metal chair and 2 dogs. When the mover arrived, there was only 1 man, the driver. He called for back up. 2 men arrived 30 minutes later. One smelled like alcohol. I found out the next day that these 2 guys were not employees of Safebound, nor do I believe they were subcontractors which put me in a position of liability due to lack of disclosure. I had a container that was not mine left in my garage. It took almost 2 weeks of constant phone calls and emails to get them to pick it up. Many of my belongings are damaged and Im still trying to get compensated to date. Do your research before hiring this company.

Paid for Full Service, Finished the Move Ourselves

We chose Safebound Moving & Storage because of their positive reviews and their support of veterans, which was meaningful to us as my husband is a veteran and below the knee amputee. Initially, our experience was very positive. Derek was kind, professional, and helpful throughout the quoting process. We first planned for them to move only large furniture, but after complications with the sale of our home, we had to switch to a full packing and moving service. Derek worked with us through multiple walkthroughs and helped update the estimate quickly. Unfortunately, the actual move itself was incredibly stressful and poorly executed. When scheduling, dispatch asked what time we wanted the crew there, and I requested 6:30 AM because we were closing on our home that same morning and needed to be fully out before the buyers moved in later that day. I also explained that we needed everything completed by around 5 PM so we could begin unpacking and organizing at the new property. The day before the move, we were told the crew would arrive at 9 AM instead. I explained again that timing was critical, and they said they would check with the foreman. The morning of the move, the crew had still not arrived by the time we had to leave for closing documents at 9:15 AM. At 10:15 AM I received a call saying they were “10 minutes away,” which is when I was informed there was apparently a 9–11 AM arrival window that had never been communicated to me. Since we had no choice, I told them to let themselves in and start packing. By 11:30 AM, they were nowhere near halfway done. I explained that cleaners were arriving and buyers were taking possession that afternoon. I was told they needed another 1.5–2 hours, which already felt tight but manageable. At 1:30 PM, my cleaners called because the house was still far from packed. At that point, myself, a friend, and even my cleaners were helping pack and load our personal vehicles because we had to get out of the house. Around 3 PM, my husband discovered the movers had completely run out of room in the truck while there were still many items left behind. To add context, this was a 2,100 sq ft 4 bedroom home, but two bedrooms and one bathroom were already fully packed before the movers even arrived. We hired a full pack and move specifically because I am still recovering from multiple broken ribs and cannot safely lift heavy items, and because my husband had knee surgery scheduled two days later. When the movers arrived at the new property, they refused to unload until payment was made, despite the fact that they had not completed the move and many items were still left at the old house and garage. After speaking with the office, they eventually agreed to unload, collect payment midway through, then return to finish the job at no extra cost. To be fair, the second conversation I had with the office was much more helpful and professional than the first, and the crew did eventually return to finish loading the remaining items. However, the overall experience was still extremely disappointing. The buyers had already moved into our old home while we were still scrambling to finish moving out. The movers left gloves, trash, and debris scattered throughout the house and yard. Boxes were largely unlabeled. By the end of the night, most items were simply dumped into our garage because everyone was exhausted and trying to finish. The crew finally left around 9 PM. Even now, the buyers are still contacting us about items the movers missed throughout the house, and we now have to hire additional help to move furniture and boxes from the garage into the home because we physically cannot do it ourselves. I genuinely wanted this experience to go well because the company seemed caring and professional during the planning process. Unfortunately, the execution on moving day created one of the most stressful experiences we’ve ever had during an already difficult transition.

Trustworthy Moving Company

Safebound is fast and efficient and the employees friendly and helpful. I have used this company three times and they never had a surprise charge. My bed frame was loose, as a screw fell off when I moved it to paint and they were kind enough to fix it when setting it up in my new home!

Phenomenal cross-country moving experience preparation

Safebound has pleasantly surprised me with the level of professionalism their staff (Zac Reid primarily) executes their company with on a day-to-day. I am working full-time, while going to grad school, during this cross-country coast to coast move. Any time I have a quick question or need to speak with someone, they immediately assist me as needed. Super grateful to have found a company to work with that has made my life 10,000x easier.

Good start, dissatisfying finish

TL;DR: The experience setting up the service was smooth with good communication and customer service. However, there was lackluster communication after a significant delay in getting my belongings within the agreed upon time frame. Some background: I am moving out of NYC at the end of April, storing my belongings for 6 weeks, then moving to Chicago in June. I have no furniture and enough belongings to fill a Manhattan studio and bathroom (not a lot of stuff to move but a large distance to cover). I booked the service for loading, storage, delivery, and unloading (I did not purchase packaging service or packing materials). ——————— Update as of 15 July: I wrote the original review after my belongings were picked up at the end of April. For a move from NYC to Chicago, the company has a 10-business-day from the date you are ready for the delivery to arrive. My first date of delivery was 15 June, and I just received my things on 15 July. To be fair, this is peak moving season, and the delay was due to an insufficient number of truck hauls scheduled from NYC to Chicago at the time I needed. Not my fault, and not Safebound’s fault. However, as they are the moving company, I expected diligent communication in explaining the situation, keeping me updated, and a level of urgency in finding a solution to the issue. I let the 10-business-day window pass without much comment. I explained to the admin at Safebound that I was starting a new job with long hours and a limited ability to leave or take time off to collect my belongings, so they agreed to notify me 48 hours prior to delivery. After the 10-business-day window, I called, left voicemails, and sent emails to inquire about the status of my delivery. I did not hear back for a few days from any of the attempts at communication. When I was able to get someone on the phone, customer service was always pleasant in our conversations, but they were unable to offer a solution to expedite the process and would often escalate the issue to the appropriate department. However, I was not contacted by anyone with a solution or update until 03 July when I was told my belongings had been put on a truck and would arrive within the next week with a 48-hour notice prior to arrival. I never heard from anyone that week, and after several days of calling for updates, I was told that my things would arrive on either 13 or 14 July. During this time I was also told that I would be contacted by a supervisor to discuss appropriate compensation for the delay in receiving my belongings and the lack of communication on Safebound’s part. I left work early one day and took off a day of work, but there was no communication and no delivery. At 8am on 15 July, I received a call at work notifying me that the delivery drivers were ready to deliver my belongings. I had to ask for an unexpected extended lunch break and rush to my place to receive my belongings and then wait 30 minutes to be connected to a supervisor at Safebound to receive an appropriate discount for the issues before I could make the final payment in cash and have my belongings moved into my place. I understand that some things were out of Safebound’s control, but there is a level of professional courtesy expected when a service interruption happens. I should have been kept up to date on the status of my order without having to constantly call and leave voicemails, and I should have been given more than 4 hours notice of my delivery, especially as I was at work. Even getting compensation for the delay and lack of communication was lackluster as it was down to the last minute when my delivery could not be complete until we agreed on what I still owed after the discount. ——————— Original review, 29 April: my belongings have been picked up by Safebound, and I have been quite happy with my experience. Everyone I have interacted with has been very genial! When I was calling moving and storage companies, Safebound was one of the few that didn’t make it feel like I needed to rush to book the service, which was refreshing. They ultimately had the best price for my move, so I booked their services. A.J. Anthony was very diligent about explaining the terms of the contract, explaining the price, and being transparent about what I am responsible versus what they are responsible for. Leading up to the date of loading my things, they reconfirmed the service and when they could pick up my stuff as well as getting me the certificate of insurance. On the day of, all my stuff was packed and set near the entrance ready for pickup. The driver, Diana, was communicative, pleasant, and very helpful. The mover, L.A., was quick and professional in reinforcing and loading my boxes. I’m quite pleased with my experience so far, and I’m hoping it continues to be a great experience with storage, delivery, and unloading in Chicago.
