Being a nomad is a great present to me. I am on my own. TopTal gives me that and much more. The quality of the projects ard so great! On the other hand, it's been very difficult to get new projects. The competition is really challenging. Also some clients are private people without any experience of how software development works. This makes the work much more difficult.

Five Years on Toptal: Quality Clients and Consistent Payments

I’ve been working through Toptal for nearly five years, and the biggest reason I’ve stayed on the platform is the quality of the clients. I’ve worked with two long-term clients, and both have been excellent to work with. The teams were technically strong, the engineering discussions were engaging, and there was a genuine focus on building quality software instead of just shipping features as quickly as possible. It has been a great environment to learn, contribute, and work alongside experienced people. Another thing I’ve consistently appreciated is the payment process. In all these years, I haven’t faced a single issue with payments. They’ve always been processed on time, so it’s one less thing to worry about as a freelancer. Toptal has provided opportunities to work on meaningful projects with professional clients while making the operational side of freelancing straightforward.

There are several things I like about TopTal I guess the most important one is the unlimited application you can sand for jobs. I also like the idea of recruiters who help you to prepare for the interviews, learn some stuff about the clients.

Toptal was fantastic at putting us with several candidates in a very short amount of time and all of the candidates were specifically chosen for us based on how we work and they all were people it would have taken us forever to find. We selected the one that fit our model best and we are huge, huge fans of our engineer Calado.

I like Toptal a lot

I like Toptal, and I liked the people I’ve interviewed with them. The only issue is not really Toptal’s fault, the talent they refer can create a resume and they can “say they have all this experience and expertise”, but until you work with them, nobody really knows for sure how good or bad they are even after Toptal vets them. You only fully know once you work together for a project or two. The biggest issue I see is the hourly model. It’s very hard to accurately track in an hourly model how many hours someone truly works, what they accomplished in those hours, and how efficient they were. I think there should be an agreed upon max # of hours the talent gets paid for any given project until the job gets completed. This way, they know they must complete that given project quickly or they max out the amount they earn. And they give a more accurate estimate of how many hours that job will take them from the beginning. So the person like me who is hiring them knows up front if it makes sense financially to hire them. Otherwise the talent can say a job will take them 10-15 hours, and then halfway into the job, they change the estimate and they say it will now take 30 hours and this happened to me personally and again, Toptal has little control over this. This also happens in the construction business all the time. It’s hard to gauge what a job costs if the quote given up front is not completely accurate. It doesn’t protect the person hiring someone in an hourly situation enough. Until TopTal tweaks the hours model, I couldn’t continue working with them, however, Colin and Jeeson were great, very helpful and honest guys. I have nothing but positive things to say about them, and overall I really liked TopTal a lot. It’s mostly the hourly model I didn’t like that much. But these guys are first class.

I was so impressed with the Toptal…

I was so impressed with the Toptal team. I was looking for a security assessment and needed someone who could quickly review the backend of my application. Also, I needed to feel comfortable with the NDA. Too many people on LinkedIn wanted to get access to my app without an NDA. Toptal made it clear that this was a priority for them to ensure my IP was secured. I only needed someone for the short term, so I used the marketplace. There were many people to select from, so I used a rubric to vet people. I landed on Anna, who was by far the one person who gave me honest answers. I feel fortunate to have worked with her and Toptal. Will use again for sure!
