Not only a financial tool but a real quality of life improvement

I've been accounting my anf then family personal finances for at least 10 years. The journey took several phone apps, spreadsheets and even a self-written application at home. YNAB is a logic continuation of this journey. Not only it covered everything I developed myself (= it's flexible enough), the team provides a ton of educational articles and videos to catch up and/or learn new ways to use it. All in all, our family is indeed in the best financial shape than ever! I frankly didn't believe it was possible, but yet it is!

Finally a budget I actually stick to

Honestly, YNAB is a total game-changer. I’ve tried plenty of apps and Excel sheets before, but this is the first one that actually clicked and gave me a clear view of where my money is going. It’s not just about tracking expenses but about making a plan for every euro before you spend it. Since I started using it, the stress of managing my budget is just... gone. It’s super flexible, but it also keeps me focused on my long-term goals. If you're serious about getting your finances in order, just get it. Best money I’ve spent in a long time!

It’s a steep learning curve

It’s a steep learning curve. You guys could and should offer training as a paid service. To get value from your tool people need to “get it” - if they don’t they leave. You could probably charge $200 and we would make it back in savings easily. But I still struggle with basics like credit cards and making the rec sum up

Thanks for the feedback, Ryan! Check out our YNAB Certified Coach Directory if you're interested in paying for 1-on-1 training: https://www.ynab.com/coaching/directory. I also encourage you to write into our Support team with any questions you have about credit cards ([email protected]). If you enable Support Access Mode for your YNAB plan, we can take a look and share personalized tips! -Erika@YNAB

I love using YNAB to track my finances

I love using YNAB to track my finances, it makes it so easy to keep on top of where we are spending our dollars and to set goals for making changes.

I like that the app connects to my…

I like that the app connects to my other financial institutions and seamlessly brings my purchases into the platform. Once I figured it out, tracking those in the budget became very easy and helpful to keep a consistent budget. However, I don't think the platform is very user-friendly. I wish that while I'm in the "Plan" page of the website, I could click a category and immediately see all of the purchases made for that category. Right now, I have to click "All Accounts," search for that category, and then add up expenses, which is tedious. Additionally, the yearly goals set are challenging to reset after they are completed. For example, I have funds set aside for my daughter's birthday each year. After her birthday, the platform doesn't have me start saving for her birthday the following year but just says that the funds are spent. Even when I delete the target goal and create a new one, it says that. I don't think the goal setting for categories is particularly intuitive, and that is an example of how. Also, I wish YNAB could connect with some major retailers so that it could automatically pull the exact items I bought into the memo for it's respective expense in the budget. For example, I consistently shop at Costco. If YNAB had a relationship with Costco where my receipts were inputted into the YNAB platform, I could see how much I spend on diapers at Costco over the course of a year. Tracking specifics like this would be really helpful because I (or ideally YNAB) could help me identify patterns in my shopping. It could tell me if I spend more or less than other people with similar households in my area. This would help me understand if I am generally overspending on things like groceries, car maintenance, insurance, or other regular expenses. Lastly, I wish the platform would give me feedback on my budget. For example, if there is a monthly category that I consistently overspend on, I wish the platform would flag that pattern for me and provide a new suggested amount. Right now, I have to look through each category individually to see if there is a pattern of overspending and how much. Overall, I like the platform because I can track everything on there that I need, but I don't think it is intuitive to use and doesn't take the extra step of helping me develop a better budget. Along with tracking my expenses, I want the platform to advise me on ways to save money or improve my budget to make it more consistent with my spending.

Hi Ian! Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and detailed review. Your feedback on what has worked well for you—as well as what hasn't—is really valuable! I love your ideas for how YNAB could help rein in overspending or show you more detailed spending comparisons/trends. We appreciate you sharing those and I've made sure to pass them along to the folks on our product team. Some of the concerns you mentioned are things that we'd love to work through with you! We can chat more about viewing your transactions in a certain category from the Plan tab, making sure your targets are resetting correctly, and using the payee field to view orders from big box stores like Costco. If you'd like to dig into those, reach out anytime at [email protected] or through in-app messaging! - Caity @ YNAB

Great app for monitoring more than one bank account

I use YNAB to have a full overview of all transactions in 4 bank accounts. I've tried other apps, but YNAB is the most stable one and support is very helpful to solve synchronization problems (which have been very rare).

I really love the app 4.9

I really love the app 4.9. Buts its really hard to not use as a typical tracking app. Instead of the real way a planning app. Specially, when one partner does not use it.. but that not on the YNAB team. But great app.

Reply from YNAB2026-05-14

Hi there—thanks for taking the time to post a review! You're right that YNAB is different than typical tracking apps, but that’s exactly what can make it so effective. 😊 Personally, I am the "YNABer" in my family, and my husband never even looks at it, so I understand that can be difficult, but we make it work! If you have specific questions about that (or anything else YNAB-related!), please email [email protected]. -Erika@YNAB

Customer support is utterly useless

Customer support is utterly useless. Why would I pay 15$ a month for a “budgeting” software that I have to MANUALLY INPUT EVERY TRANSACTION because you “don’t know how to fix” my bank connection issues. Stay FAR FAR away from this scammy practice of an app. Use your own spreadsheets and save the money.

Reply from YNAB2026-05-14

I hear your frustration on this, William, and know that it's disappointing when we're not able to offer a solution to bank connection issues. While Direct Import isn't the only way to keep YNAB up to date, we understand that our other transaction entry methods may not be the right fit for everybody. We appreciate you giving YNAB a try and sharing your experience, even when it's not the one we would have hoped for! - Caity @ YNAB

Mixed experience

I love the app. The system they have created is helpful and efficient. I stopped using it because my bank account data would be delayed in transfer.my account would always become disconnected from my bank. This caused many errors and made it harder to consistently manage my budget.

Reply from YNAB2026-05-14

I'm glad to hear you find YNAB helpful and efficient. However, I can see how having bank connection issues would make things more difficult in YNAB, Katie! If you haven't already, please reach out in the app so our team can help troubleshoot. We'd love to get things running more smoothly for you if possible. -Blair@YNAB

Tiny suggestion

It's easy to use once you get used to it. The only suggestion would be for those who make the same every week, it would be nice to set up repeat deposits split to the various categories and have it count against the assigned amounts.

Reply from YNAB2026-05-13

We really appreciate your review, Hollie, and you sharing this suggestion! The intention behind assigning your money is part of what makes YNAB so powerful, but I can totally see the appeal of some automation between receiving a deposit and funding non-negotiable categories. I've passed your idea along to our product team, and hope that you'l reach out to us at [email protected] or in-app if you'd like to chat about the existing features that can help with this! - Caity @ YNAB

Responsible shoe shopping

i have never been able to keep to a budget until YNAB. It outlines all the bills coming up and how every dollar has a current or future job. This stops you overspending when you see those new pair of shoes on sale :)

$200 bucks for a Sync app that doesn't sync with appalling customer support

STAY AWAY from YNAB. I have put up with them for so long because I took so much time to build my budget, but the value is officially gone. I am currently paying nearly $200 CAD a year for a premium budgeting service that fails at its most basic feature Direct Import. I switched to Rogers Bank (Rogers Mastercard) as my primary card, only to find YNAB doesn't support it at all. On top of that, my RBC connection is a total disaster. I have to re-authorize it almost every 24 hours. When I reached out to support for help, I was repeatedly brushed off with scripted responses telling me to "just enter transactions manually." If I wanted a manual spreadsheet, I wouldn't be paying $200 a year for automation. I finally spoke to a Support Manager, who admitted their "fix" for RBC likely wouldn't work and then hid behind policy to refuse any sort of service credit or extension for the months of downtime. Their only solution is You can leave if you want. Truly disgusting! YNAB clearly doesn't care about the Canadian market. They are happy to take our money—at a massive exchange rate—while providing a broken product and dismissive, "take it or leave it" customer service. Do not waste your money. Now I have to find another competitor and lose years of budgeting history I painstakingly built with YNAB.

Reply from YNAB2026-04-30

Direct import issues can be frustrating—they're extremely complex and sometimes we're limited in what we can do. If our alternate transaction entry methods aren't what you're looking for and you've chosen to leave YNAB, we're sad to see you go, but we also understand. We ultimately want you using a system that fits your needs, even if that isn't YNAB. Know, however, that you don't have to walk away without your budgeting history. You're welcome to export it and take it with you. Be sure to reach out to us at [email protected] if you'd like help with that process. -Renae @YNAB.com

I actually look forward to using YNAB

Budgeting has always stressed me out. I’ve tried it so many times and then given up. But I have been using YNAB daily for over a year!! It’s helped me really know how much I have and where it’s going. I feel in control and it longer stresses me out. And using the app every day is something I actually look forward to!

This has put everything on autopilot for me. My spreadsheets worked for a long time, but it was frustrating have multiple bank accounts to "bucket" my expenses and to track when something was spent on a Credit Card or paid for with a check. YNAB keeps an accurate view while those things are hanging out there so no concern for overspending. HIGHLY recommend!

YNAB is Feature Rich and Excellent

YNAB is a great platform for managing your personal finances. Coming from other tools like EveryDollar, this learning curve was a bit steep due to having way more features but this is the best thing about YNAB. We can integrate all of our accounts and get full coverage. Another great thing that might not matter to non-technical folks is the API. As programmed by trade leveraging that has helped solved some tricky duplicate transaction issues but haven’t really needed to use it after that and again the feature set offered by the YNAB platform is great and gives users real control over there data and finances to help them achieve their best outcomes great product would recommend to anyone interested in budgeting and finances any day.
