Interactive Brokers

Unreasonable 1,000,000 share volume…

Unreasonable 1,000,000 share volume limit makes trading low-priced UK stocks impractical. I have been unable to place normal-sized orders on certain UK equities due to Interactive Brokers’ 1,000,000 share volume cap. In practice, this restriction becomes highly problematic for low-priced SETSqx securities. At very low prices (for example ~0.02p per share), 1,000,000 shares can represent only around £100–£200 of value. As a result, even modest position sizes require multiple separate orders. To build a position, I am forced to split trades into many smaller orders, each attracting separate minimum commissions. This is not a market cost — it is a direct result of the broker’s internal restriction, which increases trading costs and reduces execution efficiency. For example, a £2,500 position may require 25 separate 1,000,000-share orders instead of a single trade, resulting in 25 minimum commissions on both entry AND exit. IBKR has stated this is a risk control measure, however a fixed share-based limit appears disproportionate when it prevents normal trading activity in low-priced securities and is significantly below typical market dealing sizes in some instruments. Overall, this restriction can make it impractical to build or exit positions without unnecessary cost and complexity. As a result, I am considering moving to a broker that allows larger order sizes or more flexible execution for low-priced shares. Thanks for responding to review. A complaint was raised about this issue and the outcome is the 1m volume limit remains - which I could work with - but its the minimum commissions per order that is the issue on such small value orders. I am transfering out to a broker that does not have this 1m volume restriction.
