heart rate monitors always break
I've used MyZone for about 9 years, and in that time I've gone through roughly 3-4 MZ-3 units plus an MZ Switch bought 2 years ago. You may ask yourself why one man needs like 5+ heart rate devices? I only have one heart after all. Well here's the issue; every single one had developed the exact same fault: the internal battery corrupts or dies and can no longer hold a charge. This isn't a gradual decline, it happens suddenly and usually without warning. The device will charge fine when plugged in, but once you unplug it and wear it (chest strap or wrist), it won't turn on. I've always charged my devices from my laptop specifically to avoid any charging issues, and it's made no difference; the battery is just dead. Myzone issued replacements for my Mz-3, but when it was time for my switch to develop the fault, the customer service team basically said sorry no can do it's out of warranty. Imagine working for 5+ years to receive a 'hall of fame' status on myzone, yet they only cover their devices from fault for one year? The chest straps have also noticeably declined in quality over the years. Each replacement has worn out and become damaged more easily than the last. Altogether I've spent around £300 on these devices. When I contacted customer service, I was told the warranty only covers 1 year, and the best they could offer was a 30% discount on a new unit. That's a poor response for products at this price point, especially when the fault is clearly recurring across multiple units and years. It's also disappointing that MyZone kept releasing new hardware in the meantime, the Switch came out more than 5 years after the MZ-3, without ever fixing this apparent battery defect. I'll add that the app itself is well supported and I genuinely like the pace of product development, and the team behind it are always helpful when you reach out. It's just a shame the hardware quality hasn't kept pace with everything else. Stop releasing hardware when you have ongoing battery defects.
