It's hard to recommend a company like this
It's hard to recommend a company like this when it seems like little to no effort was done to understand the scenario. I was interviewing for a tutoring job, and the questions they asked were very common. I thought I did well, and then got an immediate rejection within minutes. Yikes. This always gets me a bit agitated as it seems the person doing the actual screening doesn't quite understand the point I was getting across. The question was how to engage an unmotivated student (a typical tutoring scenario). I've tutored for ten years with American students, so I am familiar with this scenario. I then explained how to engage students like this by asking them how they feel, if everything is ok? In other words acting concerned but not nosy. American students like teachers who are concerned about them but not nosy. However, by asking these questions you show empathy and concern for their well being which will usually grab the student's attention. I then also explained how it helps in this scenario by building rapport with the students. How do you build rapport with students? By talking about your own experience and relating it to the lesson. I am not sure what part of this was not clear to the screener, or if they have actually taught lessons with students (my instinct says no), but then I got this long response: "found it challenging to clearly identify a structured approach to explaining material, as well as the level of engagement and soft skills required to maintain interactive and student-centered lessons." It's almost like they didn't watch my actual answer to the question being posed since I DID use soft skills to talk to the student, I did use the approach of building rapport by talking about my experiences, and relating it to them, etc. (Sigh) very frustrating. I already have accounts with other tutoring companies, but I would be hesitant to recommend this one based on the response I received. Any potential tutors, I would say to avoid this one at all costs.
