UK creators beware - read this first
I am a UK-based course creator who paid $828 upfront for an annual Teachable 'Builder' plan, attracted by their marketing of 0% transaction fees. When my first student paid £750 + VAT for my course, I received only £643.50. On investigation I discovered that Teachable converts every GBP payment to USD for processing, then converts it back to GBP for payout — a systematic double currency conversion applied to every single transaction. Combined with a 3.90% processing fee (significantly higher than standard UK Stripe rates), the result is a material deduction on every sale that is not clearly disclosed at signup. When I raised a formal complaint, Teachable's own customer service acknowledged in writing that their fee structure "may not always be surfaced prominently at signup." Despite this admission, Teachable has formally rejected my complaint in its entirety. They have refused to refund any of the fees deducted from my transaction, and have refused to downgrade my annual plan on a pro-rata basis despite the service being materially different from what was described at the point of sale. I have therefore submitted a chargeback through my bank, and a complaint to the US Federal Trade Commission regarding deceptive pricing practices toward international creators. If you are a non-US creator considering Teachable, I would strongly recommend clarifying exactly how your GBP or non-USD payments will be processed before signing up, particularly on an annual plan.
