Motel 6

Only because of my dog

When I drove across the country (USA) and back, I relied exclusively on Motel 6. They allow two pets with no pet fees. Also, Motel 6 is everywhere, which make it a no brainer for road trips with dogs. You don't have to worry if the hotel allows pets or have a pet fees. This makes trip road trip planning much easier. The quality of the hotel rooms varies greatly. From "not bad" to "poor". Their buildings are generally older. I did have one terrible experience in one city. We arrived quite late and the family is very tired. But there was no one at the front desk to check us in. I knocked and called and rang the bell and waited for more than an hour. I called the main Motel 6 corporate phone, and they weren't able to reach anyone. Fortunately, there was another Motel 6 across the street, and we were able to get a room there. Overall, though, I think Motel 6 is a convenient hotel for pet owners. There isn't any other large hotel chain in the US that has no pet fees that I know of. However, if I don't have a pet, Motel 6 would not be my first choice. I prefer hotels with free breakfast included, which make it so much more convenient for a travelling family.
