Agoda

I booked a hotel in Tokyo through Agoda. I also looked at booking directly with the hotel which was cheaper but the hotel was going to charge a tax at the property. Agoda charged the tax up front. So I booked with Agoda and paid the 10%tax up front. When I got to the hotel they said that the tax Agoda charged was not the consumption tax and I would have to pay the 10% again. Why did Agoda charge taxes that the hotel would charge again. I have booked a few times previously and had no problems but this is very poor. I tried to contact them to find out why I pay taxes twice and all I get is an automated response telling me that properties may charge taxes. But why do Agoda charge taxes? Who gets those? Never using Agoda again! For clarity and fairness Agoda did get back to me and when I went to pay the taxes at the end of my stay the situation had been rectified. I paid only the local per person tax which was what I had expected to pay from the beginning. It took a lot of effort to get through to Agoda but they did make it right.
