Impressions of Lijiang and Shangri-la

Lijiang, an idyllic epicentre cradled by the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the First Bend of the Yangtze River to the north; a landmark of great historical importance in trade and culture, from the Ancient Tea Horse Road to the Naxi ethnic group and their famed pictographic script 东巴文. No amount of reading can substitute a passionate local guide. To this end, I must credit Loren for making my first visit to Lijiang so memorable. Loren, an inquisitive youth with much fervour and drive, brought a little spark to each destination we visited with personal anecdotes. His attention to details is particularly commendable, a rare trait among young men these days. He entertained my challenge to summit 4680m of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain which gave me confidence to complete the hike. An oxygen canister is essential and attention to one’s health condition. High altitude can easily take down the fittest and must not be taken lightly! Impression Lijiang is a must watch. This is Zhang Yimou et al’s homage to the livelihood of Lijiang’s multiethnic communities with 玉龙雪山 as its backdrop, complimented by rich moving musical compositions and some incredible vocals from the outstanding cast of non-professional actors. Be prepared to brace erratic weather conditions for this outdoor spectacle…an umbrella and lots of UV protection. Amandayan, perched on the slopes of Lijiang old town offers a panoramic view of 大研古城. The property’s courtyard-style rustic elegance blends harmoniously with its surrounding. Rooms are well maintained with good amounts of natural lighting. Ms Marvel Wu leads an outstanding team equipped to provide a bespoke experience. For a curated F&B experience, Jessica is the Aman domain expert. Chef Wu’s hidden gem 山寻云飨, is tucked in the belly of the Baisha village. This serene location serves up delightful dishes and drinks using local ingredients. Seats are very limited and advanced booking is necessary. 40 hours in Lijiang left a vivid impression and a strong desire to return. My visit to Shangri-la was spiritually poignant. The first was when my guide Pema Tsering and I used every ounce of might to turn the world’s largest gold-plated prayer wheel at the Dukezong. The major highlight had to be the Songzanlin Lamasery, a 400 year old relic, where I had the pleasure to sit down with Geshela 确佩洛桑 and engage in an insightful discussion about Buddhism. I am so grateful to Pema for this arrangement and this visit is a nice prelude to my next stop, Lhasa. I had the gentlest soul of a driver, Mr Zhao, throughout my entire Yunnan travel from Dali to Shaxi to Lijiang then Shangri-la. Mr Zhao is engaging, patient, drives with great care and keep the vehicle impeccably clean.

Terrible company that does not honor…

Terrible company that does not honor their own policy. I booked some high speed train tickets via them, then had to cancel. Their website says there will be a 5% cancellation fee, they charged me 25% instead and claimed their online system is “under maintenance” and they can’t guarantee the cancellation and require copies of all our passports in order to cancel. Total scam, do not use!

Interesting day trip in Chengdu

Very professionally run, Guide and Driver were most professional, warm, and passionately committed to making our trip memorable and enjoyable.

Overall a very good experience

Overall, it was a very good experience. The guides are excellent, the drives were comfortable and the hotels were very good except the one in Zhangjiajie (not well thought out with not enough bars/hooks to hang up clothes and laundry)

More than a tour guide!

Our tour guide for Dali,Nancy, was amazing. She was knowledgeable, very organized, and intuitive in understanding our needs. She created a fun, stressless vacation. She prepared us each day and even prepared our following vacation with another tour guide by providing us with water, snacks and fruit for the next trip. We felt so cared for. We will miss her.

So even though it's been more than 1 year since I booked my honeymoon to China with this website, all the details of dealing with this organiser has been excellent enough that I recall every single thing. I wish to state that the service has been exceptional and great from start to end. Firstly, we had initially reached out to this company several months prior while planning a trip to China. The trip organiser (not sure the name) actually counterintuitively advised us AGAINST travelling there because it was a public holiday period and it would be nearly impossible to see anything. So even though we didn't end up booking with them that occasion, the fact that they were so considerate and thoughtful was what made us go back to the company when planning our honeymoon several months later. When we eventually tried again for March 2025, before even going there, our tour coordinator Bert Hu reached out and helped to give us a personalised plan of the holiday. When we wanted to change any detail of the original itinerary, he made every single amendment as requested according to what we wanted. We had private guides who could speak English for all our visits, and they made sure everything ran smoothly. There was only one hiccup, which was when one of the airport pickups failed to show up. Bert immediately responded even though it was the middle of the night at 1am! Within a few days, the refund was made to me for the airport transfer. I also want to commend the tour guide Laura, who brought us around Beijing on the first day and helped us take so many pictures, and even helped make surprise arrangements for a costume dressing specially for our honeymoon. Overall it was an extremely great trip and travel company. I'm currently planning another trip, either to China or Bhutan, and have gone back to this same company. They really keep your records it seems, as Bert Hu again has been assigned to me and that was a pleasant surprise for which I am very grateful, and also which prompted me to submit this review as I had yet to do so since my honeymoon! Again, it was a pleasure, and my greatest and deepest appreciation to Bert Hu for his great service :)

Approachable and accessible

I got in touch with China highlights and got a response instantly from Liberman, who was assigned as our coordinator, we first had 6 in our group however due to the unrest in the Middle East, one couple couldn’t make it. Liberman was very prompt with his response to any questions we had. When in China he was always on call, it was comforting to know we were in safe hands. He listened to our needs and tailored our trip accordingly, his suggestion making for an amazing look into beautiful China. Thank you Liberman, for your patience’s in dealing with some hard customers, with our requests. We will be back now that you have given us a taste of your hospitality.

This was the first time I used China Highlights, and my experience from the start to the end was a very positive one! I've been in contact with Bert Hu for over a year to organize this family trip, and he's been super patient with us. All the guides at each city were all very helpful and played a huge role on the success of the trip. Even when we ran into problems during the trip, Bert was able to resolve it to above and beyond our expectation. You have a highly satisfied group of travelers, and we will definitely come back to you! In fact, I've already put a deposit down for the next one, although we still have to figure out where to go at this point!

China Highlights Fabulous Holiday

Our visit to China was one of our best holidays. Because we invested in using a company like China Highlights it meant we could concentrate on the key things we wanted to see and the detail was worked out by them. This meant we covered much more than solo travellers because the guide and driver in each of our chosen locations did the logistics. This meant a huge amount of time was saved as tickets were mostly pre-purchased including for highspeed rail. As a result, we did not lose time and did not have the additional travel stress and uncertainty. It was so worth it! China Highlights also have very good guides and drivers which we were able to get along with very easily. It truly changed our perspective on the Chinese people and the nation. They were truly thoughtful and gracious including our tour organizer Leah who showed a high level of professionalism. They are highly recommended by us!

13 Days Trip to China

During the month of April 2026 we've spent 13 wonderful days in China after booking our trip with China Highlights. We've travelled from Zhangjiajie to Guilin,Longsheng and Yangshuo to Chongqing, Chengdu and Leshan. Mr. Leon Long, our contact from the China Highlights agency, provided us with his full support from the beginning to the end, starting from the initial planning of our trip till the very last minute of it. He organized carefully every aspect of our travel (hotels, daily schedule, guides, drivers, train tickets) and even helped us with some unexpected issues. The whole trip was a beautiful experience! Fabulous Journey through China
