Needs improvements
Needs improvements:
What I liked with CRIGenetics is that they give you updates through your email about your up coming dna results. I also like how they organized my results, however, I noticed how broad the results are and how they are not as accurately pinpointing on the map. They're on point with accurately detecting my majority English, German, and Northwestern european results, but again, they are broad and missing my known Irish roots. Spanish was a surpise as that was exactly what I wanted to use CRI Genetics to test out if I actually did have Spanish ancestry to cross reference between my already tested DNA companies such as 23andMe and FamilyTreeDNA as their updated reference panels say that I have trace results of Spanish on both of them ( FTDNA showed a result of Iberian at 18%, MENA at <1% followed by Sephadic Jewish at <1%). I do wonder if that Spanish coming out is the result of my Northern Itialian side or the borader Mediterranean connection through migrations.
The deep ancestry was interesting and yet questionable when it comes to the trace results (i.e., when you see a percentage of ethnicity at 3%-2% or even 0.10%). CRI Genetics shows that I might have a distant ancestor who came from South Asia from different generations on the timeline. Im wondering if CRI Genetics is confusing potenial distant ancestor to related ancient populations like with My Heritage. At MyHeritage they have their Ancient Ancestry analysis that also shows a low percentage of that same South Asian connection. The results are similar to my results that I tested with Genomelink who also needs updated reference panels on their end.
The biggest thing that needs to improve is their claim on tracing possible ancestors back 50 generations as mine only reached to 35 generations with the ancestor being from India. On a blog they did make it clear that it would be impossible to accurately test all ancestors. Since it looks like they don't have a deep ancestry reference population to test with actual archeology sites this claim makes the supposed timeline going back 50 generations more of prediction then over all accurately detecting your ancestor from 1,000 years ago.
To conclude, CRIGenetics has the potential to become a rival towards mainstream DNA companies, but it needs to evolve; it's lack of appropriate, updated reference panels make it hard to decern the company's accuracy with its practice in science. The company also needs to recover their reputation and credibility from a serious lawsuit from 2023 charged for deceiving customers and shady advertising methods. The company will NEED to recall their pricing methods using monthly or annual subcriptions to be more affordable and not charge $100s or more for credits to open all reports. To potential new customers interested in trying out CRIgenetics, please do your own research on the company and if they don't improve, do not waste your money! You can still try it out if you want, but the company needs to improve in a lot of areas to make itself equal to other DNA companies.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed and thoughtful feedback. We really appreciate you highlighting what you found helpful.
We also hear your concerns regarding the broader regional assignments, trace-level results, and how these compare with other DNA services you’ve used.
Genetic ancestry estimates can vary between companies due to differences in reference panels, algorithms, and how populations are grouped or defined.
The information we display on the timeline does consider all chromosomes; however, our algorithm only detects and reports results that meet a minimum 80% accuracy threshold. This helps ensure that what is shown is supported by a higher level of confidence within our model.
Following our recent FTC review, we're pleased to reaffirm the accuracy of our scientific methods, the quality of our products, and our commitment to ethical operations and stringent data privacy measures. The FTC's concerns were minor and limited to certain sales and marketing practices in our initial startup phase, practices we have since ceased. Rest assured, we continually strive to uphold the highest standards in all aspects of our work.
For more information, you can read a statement from our CEO here: https://www.crigenetics.com/blog/cri-ftc-investigation
If you’d like to discuss your results further or have any additional questions, please feel free to send us an email, start a chat, or give us a call—we’re here to help.
Thank you again for your time and detailed feedback.

Very little recent information on families.
Very little more recent information. My wife's Ancestry report over 5 years ago actually pinpointed the exact area of Norway that her grandmother was born in. This report just said I am 66% Scandinavian, when I'm told I'm half Finnish. Really NOT worth the money.
Reply from CRI Genetics2026-06-18
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We understand your disappointment regarding the level of detail provided in your report, especially when comparing it with another ancestry report that provided a more specific location for your wife’s family history.
While DNA itself does not change, different DNA testing companies may provide different results because each company uses its own methods for analyzing genetic information. Factors such as the algorithms used, reference population databases, genetic markers analyzed, and reporting methods can influence how ancestry estimates are categorized and presented.
In our Advanced Analysis report, you can find Finland included within the Northern European category. We prioritize accuracy over precision, and our selected regions allow us to maintain our high confidence level of over 90% accuracy in our ancestry estimates. While some reports may provide more specific regional breakdowns, we focus on providing results that meet our accuracy standards.
We also understand the value of having more detailed regional insights. We have plans to add further breakdowns and enhancements to our reports in the future, and when these updates become available, you will be notified.
We truly appreciate your feedback and understand that you were hoping for more specific family details. Your experience is important to us, and your comments help us continue improving our services.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us.

Reply from CRI Genetics2026-06-18
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concern. We're sorry to hear that your report appears inconsistent with your family history and previous DNA testing results.
Our ancestry reports provide a research-grade estimation of your BioGeographical Ancestry that has a confidence level of over 90%, which is one of the highest standards on the market.
Different DNA testing companies may produce varying results due to differences in reference population databases, analysis algorithms, and how ancestry categories are defined. These factors can sometimes lead to variations when compared across services or personal family history expectations.
We’d be happy to review your results with you in more detail and help clarify what may be contributing to the differences you’re seeing.
Please feel free to send us an email, chat with us, or give us a call—whichever is most convenient for you—and we’ll be glad to assist further. Your satisfaction is very important to us, and we want to make sure all your concerns are properly addressed.

being over charged for what i ordered
My initial experience started with seeing they had charged my credit card for $322.29, when I had ordered the basic test for $129.26. They had added on additional tests. I wrote that I wanted those removed. They did that, but it took several emails to convince them I meant what I said. Then when the test swabs were sent, they included another kit, and were charging me for it, if used. I wrote I did not intend to use it, was I to send it back, and after a couple of more emails...got it taken off my acct. We used the swabs we wanted tested, and paid extra for fast results . This came back in a month's time, and was just an email on line, with some arrows on several countries and some percentages.
I know family lore can be incorrect, but some heritage facts we were sure of, were not evident in the results, and we feel since we did not give them the clues we were looking for, (that they asked for) so they couldn't use them and we would get a true list of results, we are confused as to the genuine results. I guess you get what you pay for, but a months worth of emails amounting to about 8 or more....I have to say I definitely do not recommend this company and if I'd read the other reviews first, would not have wasted my money.
This was a Birthday present for my husband.
Rating their customer service is difficult as they responded rapidly , full of sugar and pep talk, but did not seem to be connected to the real research going on, but was located countries away, at least the persons I spoke had various accents and the connections were poor. I just feel this whole thing was a big waste of time and money....do not use them to get true results and get pressured to buy upgraded tests that might not even be true.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we are sorry to hear the experience did not meet your expectations, especially as this was meant to be a birthday gift for your husband.
We understand how frustrating the billing issues and repeated follow-ups must have been, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Regarding the ancestry results, genetics and genealogy are related but not always identical. Genealogy is based on family records and known ancestry, while genetics analyzes inherited DNA segments. Because DNA inheritance is random, some known family backgrounds may appear in smaller percentages or may not appear prominently in ethnicity estimates.
Results can also vary between companies due to differences in databases and regional classifications. Additionally, not every ancestor passes down detectable DNA over generations, even when there is documented family history from a specific region.
We appreciate your honest feedback and will share it with the appropriate team as we continue working to improve both our service and customer experience. In the meantime, if you need further clarification with your ancestry reports, please reach out to us by sending us an email to [email protected] or calling our customer care team at USA 1-800-571-9216; UK +44 8002081204. Hello Carol! We understand your expectation and appreciate you sharing this with us. Our testing is based on genetics rather than genealogy, which means the results focus on DNA ancestry, ethnicity estimates, and genetic insights rather than identifying specific people in your family tree.
Because of this, the test cannot automatically show the names of ancestors, parents, or relatives unless those individuals have also tested with us and have opted in to participate in genetic matching. Without a matching profile in our database, we are unable to identify or confirm specific family members.
We understand this may not have been the outcome you were hoping for, and we appreciate your feedback regarding the expectations for the service. For any further clarification with your reports, please reach out to us by sending us an email to [email protected] or calling our customer care team USA 1-800-571-9216; UK +44 8002081204. Theircresults are incorrect and their customer support is insulting
Their results did not match other tests I had run nor did their results match my genealogy research. The results were so off-base that I seriously think I gave me else's results. (For instance, the other tests and my research indicated more than 60% of my ancestors come from one country; CRI says I have no DNA from there.) When I questioned them, they told me they don't make mistakes. After multiple questions, they agreed to look into it. That was three-months ago and there has been no follow up nor have they responded to my requests for updates.
This is not a trustworthy company.
Reply from CRI Genetics2026-05-26
Hello Katherine! We are truly sorry to hear about your experience and sincerely apologize for the frustration this has caused.
We completely understand why you would be concerned when your CRI Genetics results differ significantly from both your genealogy research and other DNA tests you have taken. We also apologize if any previous interaction made you feel dismissed or unheard.
Please know that genealogy and genetics are not always the same thing. Genealogy follows documented family history, such as names, locations, and family records, while genetic ancestry estimates are based on inherited DNA patterns and statistical comparisons to reference populations. Because of this, it is possible for DNA results to differ from known family history or from other testing companies, especially since each company uses different databases, population samples, and interpretation methods.
For example, a family line associated with one country through records and identity may genetically overlap with neighboring populations due to centuries of migration, border changes, and population mixing. Different companies may categorize those same DNA markers differently.
That said, we completely understand your concern regarding the level of difference you described, and we would genuinely like the opportunity to revisit your case and check the status of the review request that was previously submitted.
Please reach out to us by sending us an email to [email protected] or calling our customer care team USA 1-800-571-9216; UK +44 8002081204. We look forward to a productive conversation with you to ensure you get the level of satisfaction you deserve. Have a great day!

Hello Roza! We’re sorry to hear that you feel this way about your results. DNA ethnicity estimates can sometimes seem unexpected or confusing because they are based on genetic comparisons, ancient migrations, and statistical modeling rather than recent family history alone.

Waste of money.
First of all I was very disappointed I had to pay import fees on this - I did not realize it wasn't Canadian. Second - I had to request the return label as my kit did come with one. I paid extra to have the report expedited and now my dashboard says it could take 30 - 60 days to get any Relative Finder matches.
The report I received has no personal information, I already know what colour my eyes are and what shape my nose is. The ancestry information is extremely vague and I quite disagree with it knowing my own ancestry quite well. I feel this was a waste of time and money.
The only positive comment I have is that when I needed to contact customer service in the beginning they were very prompt and helpful.
Reply from CRI Genetics2026-05-19
Hi Lisa! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations, especially regarding the import fees, return label process, turnaround expectations for Relative Finder, and your report results.
We completely understand how frustrating this must feel, particularly after paying extra for expedited processing. Please note that expedited processing applies to the laboratory processing of your DNA sample and report generation. Relative Finder matching, however, takes an additional 45 days to be completed from when your ancestry reports were completed or when you opted in for genetic matching.
At CRI Genetics, our main priority is your complete satisfaction, and we want to turn this experience around for you. Regarding your results, we would like to review the details associated with your account and kit registration so we can better understand what may have happened.

Do not buy from this company
When you buy the genetic test, just know that you will then have to pay even more than you paid for the test to actually access the data you are after. It is a bait and switch tactic.
If you do end up spending the extra $169 for the health data, just know that it is laid out in an incredibly unintuitive fashion, and finding actual information vs derived nonsense is extraordinarily difficult.
I do not recommend this company.

Ansestery report was good
I got my report faster than anticipated. I learned I'm mostly German, which I did NOT know & several other ansestery suprizes BUT I was not impressed with the "Health reports" . They seemed to test for silly things & things that are obvious that I didn't need to pay extra for like if I have blue or brown eyes, if I am likely to smell asparagus in urine.. I wish the health report told me more serious health concerns that really matter. I was happy with the ansestery reports but I don't think the silly things it tells you about your "health" was worth it.
