Rejected Because Lemon.io Couldn’t Properly Assess My Skills

I recently applied to become a developer at Lemon.io after seeing numerous advertisements and promotions for the platform and its requirements. Around 5–6 months ago, I completed the signup process, including a short technical test and my profile, and was interviewed by a recruiter. During that interview, I was given a short technical assessment related to one of the technologies I had applied for. At the time, that particular stack was not a perfect match for my experience, so it was completely understandable that my skills did not meet their requirements for that specific area. For my other technology stacks, however, there were not enough available jobs or technical reviewers, so the process was essentially put on hold. Fast-forward to last week: I came across several job openings on other platforms that closely matched the technologies and roles I currently work with for other companies. Based on my professional experience and consistent positive feedback from my clients, I consider myself highly experienced in these areas. I contacted the recruiter to ask whether my profile could be reopened so that I could be properly assessed for these technologies and potentially apply for future opportunities. I was told that this was possible because Lemon.io had introduced online technical exams, as well as an AI-based interview, which could be used to evaluate my skills. I completed both the technical test and the AI interview, and both went well. The final step was supposed to be a technical review conducted by a human expert. I was then informed by email that there were currently no available experts in my field to conduct this review. Shortly afterwards, however, I received a message from the recruiter stating that I had not passed the AI assessment. This was confusing because the AI interview was not presented as a technical exam. It consisted primarily of questions about my recent work experience, projects, and professional background rather than an actual evaluation of my technical abilities. I therefore asked how the assessment had been evaluated. I was then informed that there had been a mistake: my original interview with the recruiter from 5–6 months ago had apparently been used as the evaluation again, while the recent tests and interviews were effectively disregarded. In other words, because there was no technical expert available to properly assess my current skills, I was still being judged based on an assessment that had already been acknowledged as not being a suitable match for my current profile. This is the reason I am writing this feedback. I understand that companies need to have standards and screening processes, and I have no problem being rejected when my skills genuinely do not meet the requirements. What I find unacceptable is being evaluated negatively because the company is unable to complete its own assessment process. Many capable developers can encounter situations like this, but from a company's perspective, this feels both unprofessional and disrespectful. If a platform cannot provide the appropriate technical reviewer, the reasonable solution would be to place the candidate on hold until one becomes available—not to use an outdated assessment as a substitute and then present the result as a failed evaluation. I have dealt with many similar companies and platforms, and this has easily been one of the worst experiences I have had. It also raises a broader concern: if the onboarding and evaluation process is handled this way before a developer even starts working with the platform, it is difficult to have confidence in how developers will be treated once they actually become part of the network. There is also another aspect that concerns me. Platforms like this have a responsibility to maintain accurate and trustworthy job listings. When listings remain visible and developers are encouraged to apply despite there being limited demand or insufficient technical reviewers for certain stacks, it can create the impression of opportunities that are not realistically available. I am not criticizing Lemon.io for rejecting me. I am criticizing the lack of transparency and the way the evaluation was handled. If I fail a genuine technical assessment conducted by an appropriate reviewer, I will accept that result. But being marked as unsuccessful because the company could not provide the appropriate assessment in the first place is a completely different matter.

Lemon is a great place for freelancers

Lemon is a great place for freelancers, allowing to connect to clients with interesting projects, sometimes you have a to wait a bit to get right project, but afterwards experience is really good, no issues with payments, I had done 3 projects so far with them and it was great! I really recommend it!

It was a real technical conversation rather than a box-ticking exercise, which is exactly what you want if you're going to be matched with serious clients. Great experience as a freelance developer

I’ve had a very positive experience with Lemon.io. After completing the initial registration and vetting process, I was assigned a member of their team who helped connect me with clients looking for developers whose technical skills matched my profile. After a few client interviews, I signed a contract with one of them and ended up working with that client for around a year. Throughout the entire engagement, payments were always handled on time and I never had issues with the administrative side of the contract. For me, the biggest value Lemon.io provides is taking care of much of the networking, client acquisition, coordination, and administrative work that freelancers would otherwise have to handle themselves. This allowed me to focus primarily on the actual development work and on improving my technical skills rather than constantly searching for the next client. Overall, my experience with the platform has been reliable and professional, and I would recommend it to experienced developers looking for longer-term freelance opportunities.
