Upwork provides a solid and reliable platform for connecting with clients worldwide. The payment security via escrow gives great peace of mind, and the interface makes managing ongoing projects straightfoward. The customer support and feature set continue to improve over time.

Upwork’s onboarding UX cluttered, broken, prevents access

Upwork’s onboarding UX is incredibly frustrating, and I'm giving up on registering. Here is why: 1. I can't even look at job postings without creating an account. 2. My actual job title doesn't exist in your pre-defined list, forcing me to pick something totally unrelated. 3. Broken UI: After uploading my resume, the system auto-filled my experience, but the scroll button is broken. I can't verify what it inputted. 4. Vague Errors, It won't let me proceed to "Education" because of a vague error saying "details are missing," but it won't tell me what or where. 5. Massive Time Sink, My only alternative is to manually re-enter an hour's worth of company details, which I shouldn't have to do since I already uploaded a resume. If you're going to force users into a registration funnel, at least make sure the basic UI functions (like scrolling) work and errors are clearly highlighted. Terrible user experience.

$15 comission?

I was going to hire someone that was my first experience with upwork - however, I cancelled because of high commission for 1st milestone $55 job is about $15 commission of it. I won't be going to hire anyone from there again.

A flawed dispute system that protects dishonest freelancers over clients

My recent experience with Upwork has been incredibly frustrating and proved that their client protection is a mere illusion. I hired a freelancer for a 3D modeling project with strict, explicit requirements not to use any auto-generator plugins. Before starting, the freelancer explicitly promised in the Upwork chat: "If I fail to do any of the part, I will refund the full amount." The freelancer ended up breaking the main rule, using the banned plugins, and attempting to hide it. I caught him and provided undeniable visual proof to the Upwork Dispute Team, along with the screenshot of his own written promise for a full refund. Instead of enforcing the freelancer's written agreement (which Upwork claims is binding), the mediator simply suggested a "50/50 split" of the escrow funds, stating they "do not evaluate technical quality." They basically force clients into a corner: either accept losing half your money to a dishonest freelancer, or pay a ridiculous $337.50 arbitration fee to fight for a $400 contract. Upwork’s system incentivizes scammers to deliver poor or rule-breaking work, knowing the client will be pressured into a 50/50 settlement just to avoid exorbitant arbitration fees. Platforms like Fiverr offer far superior buyer protection. I highly advise clients to be extremely careful before putting funds into Upwork's Escrow.

Supports scam clients and punishes freelancers

This portal is full of scam, and if you report it you will be punished for it. I reported a client for an issue, but upwork got on the matter after I submitted the work and simply cancelled the contract. Now 1. the client has scammed a list of people and 2. gets away without paying and we end up without money. I had my account shut for a while and my first experience after reopening is a negative one. People, go to other platforms if you want to make money, 'cause this place is a disaster. But in case you do decide, I wish you good luck with the scam.

Upwork has been a great platform for getting jobs

Upwork has been a great platform for connecting me to potential businesses and also presenting me a platform for me to market my services to a wide range of businesses. The ability to screen through different types of Jobs and to also choose your working hours and schedules

Upwork deducts your connects at 1 connect daily

I joined July 23, 2026 Membership upgraded to Plus +91 connects. For the days you don't use their service, they keep deducting 1 connect per day. This is UNACCEPTABLE, because I paid for it with my credit card. If I am selective and do not want to apply for jobs, that's my call. On July 27, 2026 Applied to job Short Form vide -16 connects were deducted. From then on I did not apply to other jobs. Today August 10th, I have 39 connects. So minus 16 connects and my original 91 connects I have lost 36 connects, because I chose to be selective. Upwork has to give me back these 36 connects. Otherwise my recommendation to you guys is Do NOT join Upwork. They are cheats!
