Feedback - Mount Olympus Hike Experience with Mapo Tapo

Dear Team, I hope you are doing well. I am writing to share my feedback regarding the Mount Olympus hike package organized by Mapo Tapo. Unfortunately, my experience did not meet expectations and was, in fact, very disappointing. 1. Concerns Regarding Organization & Communication Arrival time miscommunication: Before booking flights, we explicitly confirmed with your team that arriving late would be acceptable. We were assured that arrangements would be managed. However, just two days before the trip, the guide informed us that they would leave if we were late. Although this was later addressed, we were told we would need to hike faster with limited breaks or risk being sent back. If accurate expectations had been communicated earlier, we would have planned to arrive a day before. Difficulty level mismatch: We clearly asked whether prior hiking experience was required and were told the hike was suitable for beginners. However, the guide stated that the hike was not suitable even for intermediate-level hikers, which created confusion and concern. Expectation vs reality (experience): The package mentioned enjoying sunrise and a scenic experience. In reality, there was no time allowed to enjoy the surroundings. The hike felt rushed and overly controlled, rather than a nature experience. Inclusion mismatch (hiking poles): It was mentioned that hiking poles were included, yet we were asked to bring or rent them ourselves. Overall, there appeared to be a lack of clear communication, leading to multiple misunderstandings, and bad organising. 2. Feedback on the Hiking Experience The overall experience felt rushed, leaving no opportunity to enjoy the hike or surroundings. The guides were discouraging and, at times, mocking, which is not the expected behavior from professional guides. Day 1: We understand there was some urgency due to our late start, but the guide: - Did not allow sufficient rest breaks - Frequently discouraged us and suggested turning back - Repeatedly stated we would not reach the refuge on time, despite the fact that we reached before 9:00 (ahead of the 9:30 deadline) Day 2: We were instructed to start at 7:00 AM, but due to long breakfast queues at the refuge, we could only start at 7:15 AM. The guide showed no flexibility or understanding. Instead she literally told that "I don't care. I fixed a time at 7Am and you should start hiking" The entire hike was again rushed: - We were not allowed to pause, even briefly, to catch our breath - We were continuously told to “keep walking” - There was no opportunity to enjoy the scenery - The constant discouraging comments made the experience stressful rather than enjoyable. - The urgency on Day 2 was particularly confusing, as there was no clear reason for it. Guide Behavior: - One of the guides had difficulty communicating in English and frequently mocking. - Specifically, I had a very negative experience with the guide named Thanos, who continuously mocked and laughed when I struggled. - This behavior led to a complete loss of confidence, ultimately forcing me to discontinue the hike. Two other participants also had to turn back as a result. End of the Tour: - Even while descending, we were not allowed to pause and enjoy the surroundings. - Upon reaching the refuge, the guide immediately left, stating she had another hike the next day, and she has to go home (That explained all her rush throughout the hike) Conclusion Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied with the experience. The hike did not deliver what was promised in terms of guidance, enjoyment, or professionalism. Instead of an enriching and memorable experience, it felt rushed, stressful, and discouraging. I signed up for a well-organized, enjoyable hiking experience—not a pressured and demotivating one. I hope you will take this feedback seriously and review both your communication processes and guide conduct. I doubt I will suggest Mapo Tapo in future because of what I experience. I am so disappointed as a whole.

Dear Mary, Thank you for taking the time to write to us and for sharing your experience in such detail. We take all feedback seriously and we want to respond to you honestly and with the attention this situation deserves. First and foremost, we are sorry that your experience of the Mount Olympus trek did not meet your expectations. We understand how much this trip meant to you, and we genuinely regret that several aspects of the experience fell short. We work with hundreds of guides, accommodation partners, and local operators across the world, with over a thousand travelers on our guides' trips every year. The vast majority of these experiences go smoothly and leave travelers with incredible memories. That said, we know that with the complexity of operating in so many destinations, occasional miscommunications can happen. And when they do, we always do our best to find a solution and learn from it. We would like to provide some context that we hope helps clarify a few of the points raised. Regarding the difficulty level: the Mount Olympus trek sits within our Mountaineering category, which by definition involves a higher level of physical demand than our standard trekking trips. The trip page includes a very detailed day-by-day breakdown: Day 1 involves a 1,000m vertical ascent over 6.5km (approximately 3–3.5 hours); Day 2 involves a further 1,000m ascent over 15km lasting 7–8 hours, with a steep scramble to Mytikas requiring helmets, harnesses, and a short-roping technique. We understand that participants may interpret 'Open to All' in various ways, and we are constantly working to ensure our fitness requirements are as clear as possible. Regarding the guiding approach: we have shared the group’s feedback directly with our local partner and the guides involved. The guides’ decisions throughout the trek were made with safety as the absolute priority, both on the ascent and the long technical descent. That said, we hear that the communication style and overall tone left participants feeling discouraged rather than supported, and this is something we are committed to addressing andwe are already working on it ( we shared alread all the details via email). At Mapo Tapo, we are deeply committed to ensuring that every trek our guides organize is safe, enjoyable, and meets the high standards our community expects. We take your report very seriously and have immediately opened an internal investigation into the points you raised, specifically regarding the logistics, the equipment provided, and the guiding approach during the trek. This involves collecting reports from our local transport partners and the mountain guides who accompanied the group to get a complete picture of what happened on the ground. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. It might sound counterintuitive, but we value a lot feedback like these. Fortunately they happen rarely, but they help a lot to continuously improve the quality and safety of our guides' trips. Warm regards, Mapo Tapo S.r.l. Customer Support Team

A Total Bait-and-Switch: Hostile Guides, False Advertising, and a Ruined Experience

I booked the "Hike Mount Olympus" trip for June 2026 expecting the "LIGHT" and "OPEN TO ALL" experience Mapo Tapo heavily advertises on their website. Instead, my group and I experienced a complete bait-and-switch, incredibly hostile guiding, and terrible logistics. False Advertising & Hostile Guiding Despite marketing this trek as requiring "no prior mountaineering experience," the local guides (Thanos and Mariza) treated the ascent like an elite, grueling time trial. To compensate for their own logistical delays, they forced a highly dangerous, relentless pace. They mocked us as the "slowest group," actively denied necessary breathing breaks, and created a manufactured urgency that directly caused group members to suffer extreme exhaustion. This forced an unapproved group split and completely ruined the experience for everyone. Severe Logistical Failures Before the trip, Mapo Tapo explicitly agreed to a flexibility window for our arrival. However, their arranged transport completely failed to accommodate this, ultimately abandoning our group and forcing an unsafe, highly stressful night hike. Additionally, our booking clearly stated that hiking poles were included. They were withheld upon arrival, forcing us to buy our own equipment out of pocket. Zero Guiding Value & Group Abandonment Mapo Tapo promises you will "return enriched" with the help of "expert guides." We received absolutely zero educational, historical, or guiding value. The entire trip was conducted as a timed race. Once at the summit, we were rushed and allowed less than 10 minutes to rest or take photographs before being forced back down prematurely. To make matters worse, the guides effectively abandoned the group early simply so that Mariza could attend a personal gig. It was blatantly clear that their own schedules took priority over the safety, pacing, and satisfaction of paying clients. I highly advise looking elsewhere if you want a professionally guided, safely paced, and enjoyable mountain trek. Mapo Tapo failed entirely to deliver the services we paid for.

Terrible experience – Very bad organization, rude guides, and a ruined milestone

I am writing this review to warn everyone before booking a trip with Mapo Tapo. What should have been a wonderful trip to Mount Olympus was actually full of stress, rush, and psychological pressure from the guides. First, the organization was a disaster. Mapo Tapo told us in writing before booking that our flight arrival times were perfectly fine. But less than one week before the trip, the head guide sent us cold messages saying that any delay would not be accepted and to find a solution with Mapo Tapo. On Day 1, the transport arranged by Mapo Tapo was more than one hour late, so the first guide just left without us. The new guides welcomed us very badly. They pressured us, saying we would not get a bed or food if we did not walk extremely fast. The official itinerary said the hike to the refuge takes 4 hours, but we did it in exactly 3 hours because of their pressure. We arrived completely exhausted. Also, hiking poles were supposed to be included in the price, but they were not there, and we had to pay to rent them ourselves. All the time, the guides kept telling us to give up, to "be responsible," and to turn back because everything would be too difficult. But I do not understand: doing a 4-hour hike in only 3 hours proves that we were perfectly capable and strong enough. The worst part happened on Day 2 during the climb. The guides used fear tactics to scare the group, saying things like "people die up there" and threatening to cancel the trip for everyone if anyone was too slow. Two participants got scared and decided to stop. Then, the female guide realized they did not have enough staff to take the remaining 6 of us to the summit safely. Instead of fixing their own organization problem, she put intense pressure on me to give up. She stood there, staring directly at me, until I was forced to sacrifice my own climb so the others could go. We learned later that this guide actually had another climb planned for the next day. She just wanted to rush back as fast as possible for her own schedule, instead of helping us reach the top. This completely ruined our trip. My partner had planned to propose to me at the summit of Mount Olympus. Because I was forced to go back, he had to quickly pull out the ring and get down on his knee right there on the trail, under the stressed and impatient eyes of the guides. A beautiful life moment was completely botched and filled with anxiety. The other hikers were back at the refuge before 3:00 PM, which proves there was plenty of time and absolutely no reason to force me to stop or discourage the others. It is clear that the guides were incompetent, mocking, and only cared about their own personal schedule instead of helping paying clients. Avoid Mapo Tapo at any cost, they can't be trusted.

An Unforgettable Adventure

Setting up with MapoTapo was incredibly easy. I really admired how informative the company was and I felt like anything I needed to know was laid out well. Cancellation wise the company is not the most accommodating and a friend of mine was not able to come or get his money back. As long as you commit it is worth it.

Hi Matthew! Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We’re delighted to hear that organizing your trip with Mapo Tapo was incredibly easy and that you found our communication informative and helpful throughout the process. We always look for making sure that everything our travelers need to know is clear before departure. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the cancellation policy. We understand how disappointing it can be when someone is unable to join a trip. Organising these adventures requires us to confirm and pay for local services, guides, accommodations, permits, and insurance well in advance, many of which are non-refundable. For this reason, our cancellation terms are structured the way they are. Thank you again for your kind words, and we're thrilled that you found the adventure worth it. We hope to welcome you on another unforgettable adventure soon! Bea from Mapo Tapo

A Complete Bait-and-Switch

A Complete Bait-and-Switch: False Advertising, Hostile Guiding, and a Ruined Trip Rating: 1/5 Stars I booked the Mount Olympus trek expecting the inclusive, expertly guided experience Mapo Tapo heavily advertises. Instead, it was a complete bait-and-switch that ruined a once-in-a-lifetime trip. False Advertising: The trek is explicitly marketed as "OPEN TO ALL" and "LIGHT" fitness with "no prior experience required." However, 5 days before the trip, a guide messaged us demanding we meet extreme time-trials, threatening to cancel the ascent if we failed. On the mountain, the guide actively gatekept the trek, stating it was "not for beginners." She demotivated participants and forced an unapproved group split. This forced separation completely ruined my planned summit proposal. Logistical Failures: Before booking, Mapo Tapo confirmed a 2-3 hour flight flexibility in writing. They later reneged. Worse, the transport they arranged arrived over an hour late, causing our original guide to abandon us and forcing a rushed, stressful night hike. Zero Guiding Value: The trek felt like a grueling, timed race to meet the guide's personal schedule. We received no historical or educational guiding. We were never allowed to stop for more than 10 minutes. We were granted exactly 5 minutes at the summit for a photo before being forced to sprint down, arriving back at the refuge by 3:00 PM with the entire afternoon wasted. They sell a supportive, inclusive trek but deliver a falsely advertised, hostile race. Save your money and book directly with a reputable local agency.

I was deeply unsatisfied with my…

I was deeply unsatisfied with my experience using Mapo Tapo. I have been on group trips in the past w/ other similar agencies and the pure lack of communication from Mapo Tapo was very concerning. Luckily, I am a go with the flow traveler. First, I signed up for this trip to support the ambassador. The ambassador was no longer assigned to this trip however, we were never made aware (still haven't been -- if I wasn't personal friends with the ambassador, I would not have known) Second, there was no communication for payments, what to pack (other than what is listed on the site, which is very generic and not all listed items pertained to our specific trip) and what to expect day of and day after Machu Picchu. Third, not sure who was at fault for this, but our Machu Picchu tickets were not secured, and we were told the day before. Luckily, the local travel agency was able to get our tickets, but we never heard from Mapo Tapo about any of this. Be careful when using this agency and honestly, book at your own risk.

Hi Melody Harman, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We genuinely appreciate it, although we're sorry to hear that your experience did not fully meet your expectations. We would like to address your concerns directly. Regarding the ambassador change, all of our trips are always 100% confirmed for travelers, allowing you to book with confidence and without worries. If an ambassador ultimately decides not to join a departure, we always ask whether they would prefer to inform the other travelers directly or have us communicate the update on their behalf. In this case, we were informed that the ambassador would communicate the change directly. We are sorry that this created discomfort, and we are taking steps to ensure that similar updates are always communicated by both the ambassador and our team going forward. Regarding the Machu Picchu permits, our local guides informed us that there was a short delay on the local operator's side in finalizing the permits. As a platform, Mapo Tapo's role is to carefully select outstanding guides and accommodations, provide comprehensive insurance coverage, and bring together like-minded people who share a passion for trekking, climbing, skiing, and other outdoor adventures. Day-to-day local operations, however, are managed directly by our trusted local guides and partners. Since the matter was being actively handled by our local partner and was ultimately resolved without impacting the trip, there was no need for our team to intervene directly. That said, we are always happy to step in whenever additional support is needed. As always, we view situations like these as opportunities to improve, and your feedback is genuinely helping us refine how we communicate before and during the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu experience. We sincerely hope to have the chance to share trails, climb mountains, or surf waves together again in the future. Warm regards, The Mapo Tapo Team

Beautiful Hike

Mapo Tapo was quick to answer any questions related to the trip. They set us up with the most amazing guides for the Salkantay Trek, I highly recommend Alpaca Expeditions. It was unclear however that we would be paired up with another group on the hike.

Lost £450 paying a deposit. Unaware that I would be completely unable to receive my deposit back even 3 months before the trip actually happens. I can’t make the trip because of home reasons and could have done with that money back because normally getting a deposit back is standard. It’s these guys’ way of making extra money. I’m not the only person this has happened to. They will offer you a voucher to spend with them again or go through an even more stressful route of insurance. Completely unhelpful. If you are going to use these guys keep this in mind, if you have a life and have to cancel a trip you won’t be getting your money back.

Hi Peter, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet your expectations, and we completely understand how frustrating this situation must feel. We'd like to kindly clarify that our cancellation policy, including the non-refundable nature of deposits, is outlined in our Terms & Conditions and agreed to at the time of booking. We always strive to be as transparent as possible about these conditions, and we're sorry if this wasn't communicated as clearly as it should have been. The reason our deposits work this way is that organising our trips requires us to work closely with local guides, mountain huts, and small local organisations that often need to reserve spots many months in advance, with many of these commitments being non-refundable on their end. In addition, the comprehensive insurance package included with every trip, covering helicopter rescue, medical treatment abroad, repatriation in case of injury, and cancellation protection for specific unforeseen circumstances, also needs to be activated and paid upfront. This cancellation insurance is designed to protect travellers if objective events prevent them from joining the trip, such as injury or illness before departure, having approved holidays unexpectedly revoked by an employer, or other covered circumstances outside of their control. These protections are included to offer reassurance and support when unexpected situations arise. These are real costs that are committed from the moment a booking is confirmed, regardless of whether the trip ultimately takes place. We did our best to offer you all the alternatives available under your cancellation terms, including a voucher valid for any future trip, as we genuinely didn't want you to lose the value of your deposit entirely. We're truly sorry the outcome wasn't what you hoped for, and we hope that one day we'll have the chance to welcome you on one of our adventures and show you what Mapo Tapo is really about. Kind Regards, Daniele Mapo Tapo

Andrea and David are the best!!

The guide and the skipper were incredible. Andrea was so knowledgeable and did a great job supporting and leading the group. David was an amazing skipper. They were both so welcoming and fun to be around. We also had great weather and a great group where all skiers were the same level and had the same goals for the trip.

Hi Veronica, We’re really happy to hear that Andrea and David made your experience so unforgettable! It’s great to know that the group matched so well, and that you were lucky enough to enjoy such amazing weather too. We’ll definitely pass your kind words on to both of them — they’ll be very happy to hear this. Thank you for travelling with us, and we hope to have you on another adventure again! Mapo Tapo Team 🏔️

COMMUNICATIONS …

Considering we booked in October of 2025 for a trip in May 2026 we should have had more than Circuit 1. We had no info on how to get Huyana Pichu and other circuits. Communications need to be better between your and Alpaca. Most of us wont have an opportunity to come back so having all that sorted with 8 months pre trip is very important

Thank you for your feedback and we’re really sorry this experience did not fully meet your expectations. We completely understand how important this trip is, especially knowing that for many travelers it may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We’d like to give a bit more context regarding Machu Picchu circuits and Huayna Picchu tickets. Access is limited by the Peruvian government and the most requested circuits often sell out very far in advance. Tickets are issued by name, non-modifiable and non-refundable, so we can only finalize them once the trip confirmation and passenger documents are received. We always try to secure the best tickets available at the moment of confirmation, but unfortunately availability cannot always be guaranteed, even with early bookings. Thank you as well for your feedback regarding communication and the Huayna Picchu information — we’ll definitely work on improving this with Alpaca and making the information clearer on the website.

Hiking around the big Topkal

Very intersting hike in some remote valleys around the 4200 m Topkal. Perfect organisation, super logistic, friendly people, good company.

Great Great Experience

It was a very, very beautiful and well-organized trip. Gio, our climbing guide, knew the area like the back of his hand and was able to show us really great tips and routes. The stay at the B&B was also fantastic—very welcoming and thoughtfully arranged. Nothing was missing. I can highly recommend this trip to everyone. A truly wonderful experience!

Our guide was amazing!!!

Our guide was amazing!!!! Lorezno was absolutely amazing and a great guide in the mountains. My biggest complaint is where we stayed. We drove in the car at least one hour each way to go skiing. Why would we not stay closer so we aren't driving 2-3 hours a day in the car everyday? Lorenzo said he provided feedback to you guys that it was too far from skiing but you guys chose that place because it was " the best accommodation". To me, you don't go on a ski trip to have " the best accommodation". We were rarely ever there cause we were skiing and driving all day! Would 100% book Lorenzo again for a guide!

Thank you very much for your feedback, and we’re really happy to hear you had such a great experience with Lorenzo — we’ll definitely pass your kind words on to him! Regarding the accommodation, we usually try to prioritize comfortable houses with features such as single beds, private bathrooms, and overall higher comfort for the group. However, we truly appreciate your feedback about the distance from the ski areas. We’ll absolutely take this into consideration for future trips, and maybe next season we’ll think differently if we understand that proximity to skiing is more important for our travelers. Thank you again for sharing your experience with us!
