What reviewers say
AI generated
Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently complained about terrible customer service, mentioning that representatives rarely answered calls or responded to emails and left urgent issues unresolved for many months. People also experienced significant payroll mistakes and calculation errors, which caused financial stress and frustrating administrative troubles for small business owners.
Some reviewers were happy with the helpful and efficient support they received from dedicated team members who patiently guided them through difficult procedures. These consumers deeply appreciated the prompt communication and professional guidance provided during onboarding sessions, retirement plan management, or complex account updates.

My Issue:
Payroll Taxes, Unresponsive customer services including Implementing staff and the Chat Agent Completely Useless.
ADP Was the worst company but this company made me feel like ADP was the second worst of all.
They sent my employees local taxes to the other county, when i informed them about it, the implementation team said that they have it sent out to the upper management. Months passed and no response from the team. when i contact them about my inquiry, they email me with the same thing saying that they will send it again to the upper management and get back to me.
This is like cat chasing a Mouse, and I am Sick of it.
The chat agent are completely useless, what is the purpose of them when i inquire them about something they refer me to my implementation team, and when i email the implementation team, they email saying they will get back to me and they never do. I feel stuck and will be moving away from this payroll software.
Do not use them if you want the problem i am having.
Thank you and Please fix your system!

When they reply to these reviews, its fake. no one responds from the email. I am missing critical medical care because they refuse to send me an unmasked w2. by some miracle united healthcare actually approved me for an angiogram after a string of bad EKGs . it has to be performed in a hospital. ID IS REQUIRED. the ONLY document the DMV will accept in place of a social security card is an unmasked w2. My insurance only approved the procedure until the 7th a few days away. I could very well die because of this company.
I went as far up the chain as i could, the customer service people are incompetent and outright lie, transfer you to voicemails of people who will NEVER call you back.. even when you say your life depends on it.
When they respond to this review, it will be fake. An investigation needs to occur, look at how this company treats people, just look at these reviews. someone needs to sue them asap.

Has gotten so much more expensive with worse customer service. Could go on and on about any number of things like a fee every holiday weekend that automatically goes instead of giving you the option to delay your check, or the new policy that employees have to verify their direct deposit and if they dont you need to pay $17 for a paper check. Just awful. Avoid at all costs.

Horrible customer service and incompetent staff. I regretted switching on first paycheck month but gave them a chance. The customer service kept getting worse so I moved to a diffeeent vendor for my small business.

Poor service, unskilled staff-
- They consistently made errors on our employees' federal taxes.
- They made calculations mistake for the exiting employees and created a lot of trouble.
- They messed up things on their own, like not depositing the taxes on time, and irrelevant credit/debit bank transactions.
We finally decided to close our services for them and moved to another service provider. I will not personally recommend Paychex at all to anyone as a business owner.

We use Paychex for payroll processing, and that service is fine. But they started sending our employees spam emails that look like open enrollment, perks, and training opportunities sponsored by the company. I think it's a violation of trust to use emails required for work and pay to sell more stuff, and doubly so to suggest it's been endorsed by the employer.

My experience with Paychex has been an absolute nightmare. Customer support is practically nonexistent, and what should have been a simple issue turned into months and months of pointless emails. Every response comes from a different person or department, and the answers constantly contradict each other. No one seems to take ownership or know what is actually happening.
They opened a PFML account on my behalf that I never needed, and even after the state confirmed it was closed, Paychex still hasn’t resolved it properly on their end. Meanwhile, I continue seeing unexplained extra charges with no straight answers — only generic responses and endless runaround.
I genuinely do not understand how this company operates the way it does. Instead of helping businesses, they create unnecessary problems, waste enormous amounts of time, and leave customers stuck in bureaucratic chaos. At this point, I feel they should be reported to the Better Business Bureau.

Absolute worst company to work with they screwed my 2025 taxes up as I can see is is a trend for them. I have emails and calls that I have proof for everything that they put me through for my company almost cost us so much damage when it came to taxes I spent two months every single day on the phone with different people emails back-and-forth with no resolve of my issues they have never been able to correct anything no matter if I sent them email with a paper step-by-step what we made with another company still have never been able to correct anything and the customer service is so disorganized nobody communicates with each other. nobody gives permission or ask for permission to make a change to your account and your specialist is as useful as a piece of dead wood on a beach finally, my tax professional had to do it himself and even after that. They turn around and it may changes to my account, even though I told them not to as I was gonna have my tax professional do it and then I confirm that any email and they still screw it up yet again and charge me three times up the prices for checks. I finally received 200 back and now we’re being charged for not using them at this moment. Run away from this crappy company

Do not use these people they are horrible. I cancelled my service after they couldn't give me any details about our 401k balance and our insurance that they handled was a mess. I did all the formal cancelations, and they didn't close things out. I still get bill $4000 a month for insurance I don't have from them. I have had to report to the department of insurance and the FBI to get this resolved, issue is still not solved. They are dishonest and obviously comfortable participating in billing fraud.

The most awful company to work with. Payroll never processed on time, problems with W2 for employee is still unresolved and there is no customer support. You pay fees with no results. Stay away from this company, I do not know how they can possible stay on business. Class action lawsuit coming

Canceled in April of 2026 and was told that I wouldn't be charged for anything else, May 1st come around and i receive and invoice so I call them to ask why and after a lot of back and fourth they said it was for something I had said no to and they would credit my account so I wouldn't get charged. May 11th they took the money from my account so once again I call they said I don't have an email with it so they would have to email someone else to handle it. Now their lost client customer service says they cant refund it cause I do not have an email saying I was supposed to get a credit. Contacted bank to dispute the charge. I will never use this company again and No one should, they lied on the multiple emails I have when cancelling that i wouldn't be charged and it also took 2 weeks for them to close my account.
UPDATE. Was asked by Paychex to email them so they could have someone reach out about the complain and no reply no one reached out to assist, pretty sure they just reply to try and make it look like they are trying.

Cut off our health insurance and 401K, we're firing them!♡
They've managed to cut off our company's health insurance TWICE in the last 3 months alone. So I've had to pay for doctor's appointments and long-term prescriptions, on top of a wisdom tooth extraction, out of pocket because they can't get their s**t together and messed up our coverage with Aetna. Of course I never know the coverage has ended until the actual appointments, because they never tell us it's ending in advance. God knows when I'm going to get reimbursed. Thanks Paychex! You suck massive amounts of balls.
3/25/26: Oh hey, you also didn't roll over our 401K contributions either.
5/8/26: Our service contract was obviously broken, and we're firing you guys! Omg!! YAY!!! ♡♡♡

I cannot wait to leave this disaster of a company. I gave them like 6 chances and month after month they either miss my payroll of just don't get back to me at all but yet I seem to get calls about upgrading my services. I felt it would be a pain to change payroll companies but Im finding it easier than I thought.
Im also paying over $100 a payroll where other companies with better records charge half the price. What am I paying for? The frustration? It's obvious this company is not doing well when my payroll specialist changes week to week. Finally going to be free of this disaster of a company!

We moved to Paychex in October 2025. Since that time we were billed for services we do not have. They applied deductions to employees person pay for benefits we do not offer. We have not been able to get any of the funds refunded. They did not file our 940s and 941 and we owe penalties and all our W-2 were calculated incorrectly. Our PTO is not being tracked. Some of our employees IRS returns have been placed on hold due to this discrepancy. The last email sent was on 4.2.26 to our representative w/o any return response. Had I seen these reviews we would gone with a different company.

Paychex has been a literal nightmare.
We're business owners with a staff of around a dozen part time workers. At first, paychex seemed to offer the features and services we needed to manage payroll.
After 3 years or so, things started to change dramatically. Fees skyrocketed, that was the first thing we noticed. Following conversations with various utterly powerless representatives, we discovered that the fees we could actually see were only a portion of the true costs for paychex.
There were layers of expenses built into the payroll figures. In FY 2024, as an LLC with 10 w2 employees at the time, we paid a total of slightly over $16,000 for payroll services on under $200k or gross pay. We found an accountant who was rightly shocked at the cost, and offered full-service payroll for under $3,000 for the same services.
Unfortunately, we also had retirement services, which has now taken 14 months to fully cancel/roll over. It's been that complicated. Paychex has been glad to collect fees the whole time, even though we paid multiple "cancellation" fees totaling over $4,000. This is on around $30k in retirement balances. Just wild.
We still have staff who haven't seen their disbursements. It's infuriating.
Paychex is a scam, 100% guaranteed. DO NOT USE THEM.

If I could give negative stars I would. I was flat lied to. They sold me a 401K stating that I could maximize employee and employer contributions over my SEP. When it was set up they set it to 0 and then they refused to change it and said I couldn't change it mid year even though I had brought it to someones attention February through May. Then when I wanted to cancel the entire thing they wanted to charge me $1500 cancellation fee AND a $2000 set up fee even though they acknowledge it was not set up correctly to begin with. When speaking with a supervisor he was willing to waive the termination fee but would not waive the set up fee. RUN! DO NOT DO BUSINESS HERE! I've had 7 months (started in November 2025) of complete frustration, that I apparently am paying them handsomely for.

I’ve been using Paychex flex for about a year. Since day 1 I’ve had issues with my time card not updating. I’ll edit and save but nothing changes. It’s incredibly frustrating and inconvenient that I have to go to HR every week to explain why my time card is messed up. The service has a ton of potential but the most important features of the service don’t even work. Can’t even find how to reach customer service on the website. Not to mention the useless chat bot. If you have other options I would look elsewhere.
